HTC’s Smartwatch Will Reportedly Be Shown Off To Carriers At MWC 2014

HTCs Smartwatch Will Reportedly Be Shown Off To Carriers At MWC 2014With MWC 2014 taking place next week, we’re sure many of you guys are looking forward to learning more about HTC’s upcoming smartphone, the HTC M8. However it also seems that HTC might have something else that they’re planning to show, which is their reported smartwatch whose battery life was apparently solved. Unfortunately if you were hoping that HTC would take to the stage to make their announcement of said device, you would be disappointed as Bloomberg’s sources have claimed that the smartwatch will instead only be shown off to carriers, presumably behind closed doors in a private meeting/event.

Interestingly enough HTC’s smartwatch is expected to be based off the Qualcomm Toq smartwatch which was shown off last year at IFA 2013. What this means is that if HTC were to match the reference design component for component, what we can look forward to is a Mirasol touchscreen display, wireless charging capabilities, the ability to take calls, play music, display calendar information, and text messaging support (read-only). However apart from this reported smartwatch that will be based on the Toq, Bloomberg’s sources also claim that HTC is working on other wearable devices, like another smartwatch with Google Now features, and a smart wristband with a thin touchscreen display.

Study Suggests We Get Bored Of Our Wearables In A Few Months

Study Suggests We Get Bored Of Our Wearables In A Few MonthsSmartwatches like the Samsung Galaxy Gear and Apple’s rumored iWatch are certainly fun products to think about. After all, who wouldn’t love the ability to check their notifications on their wrist instead of having to pull out their phone constantly, right? Perhaps right now wearable devices sound like a great idea, but what about long-term? Will people start getting used to the idea that they might need to charge their smartwatches every other day? After all with regular watches, you just put them on and you’re good to go as the batteries in normal watches tend to be good for months, if not years. (more…)

UPDATED: Fin, The Bluetooth Ring That Turns Your Hand Into A Wireless Controller, Hits Its Funding Goal

    Fin_ring

Back at CES in January, TechCrunch met Fin, the Bluetooth ring that went on to become one of our Hardware Battlefield finalists. Fin, which turns your hand into a wireless controller for smartphones, TVs, and other connected devices, just reached its $100,000 Indiegogo goal. Now Fin is aiming for its stretch goal of $150,000, which will make the ring available for a discounted price to visually impaired people.

Fin is worn on your thumb and has a tiny optical sensor that detects movements, allowing you to send commands to connected devices with a few swipes and taps of your fingers. As TechCrunch’s Greg Kumparak described when he wrote about the device’s prototype in January, you can turn down your phone’s volume by swiping your thumb down your index finger or skip the current track by swiping your thumb across the palm of your opposite hand. In the future, creator RHL Vision wants to use biometrics to assign a different behavior to each segment of your finger, basically turning them into buttons.

Fin is one of the coolest wearable devices out there because it makes you look like you have magical powers. But the ring is also very useful, especially for people with visual or motor impairments. RHL Vision says that Fin can potentially help more than 285 million visually impaired people interact more smoothly with technology. If it reaches its stretch goal, the company will make its ring available for $59 to blind people.

To get a sense of a visually impaired person can use Fin, take a look at this video, in two users talk about how Fin helps them control their smartphones and tablets without struggling to see controls on their touchscreens.

Basis Science Reportedly Looking To Sell Themselves To Tech Companies

Basis Science Reportedly Looking To Sell Themselves To Tech CompaniesOne of the features of smartwatches, apart from being able to tell the time and receive notifications, is usually the inclusion of health-related features. What this means that certain smartwatches will be able to track certain parts of your workout, like the distance you have run, the speed at which you have ran, calories burnt, heart rate, and so on. According to the rumors, Apple’s rumored iWatch is said to be packed full of health-related features, which is why a recent report from TechCrunch on how Apple might be interested in acquiring a fitness smartwatch company might not be such a stretch of the imagination.

The company in question is called Basis Science, who has been responsible for the creation of the Basis Health Tracker Watch. According to TechCrunch, the company is apparently actively looking for buyers for its health tracking smartwatch business over the past few weeks, and Apple has been named as one of the companies that might be interested in them. Apple is apparently not alone in expressing their interest as reportedly companies such as Google could be interested as well. With rumors that Google could be looking to launch a smartwatch of their own as well, their interest in the company is also somewhat believable. Apart from Apple and Google, the rumors claim that Samsung and Microsoft could be interested as well. Take these rumors with a grain of salt for now, but we’ll be keeping an eye out for additional details.

AT&T Galaxy Gear Price Gets A $100 Cut

AT&T Galaxy Gear Price Gets A $100 Cut

Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch was one of the most highly anticipated wearable devices of 2013, but it didn’t quite make a mark. There have been reports of dismal sales, which is believed to be the reason why Samsung might launch a successor within just a few months of the original Galaxy Gear hitting the market. Samsung is actually expected to unveil the Galaxy Gear 2 at Mobile World Congress 2014 later this month, so its doesn’t come as a surprise to see the AT&T Galaxy Gear price being cut, though the price cut doesn’t come without a catch.

Meet Flyfit, The Fitness Tracker You Strap To Your Ankle

    Flyfit

When you think about it, it’s odd that wearable tech makers are so obsessed with wristbands. Most wearable tech products currently focus on fitness, and the most popular cardio exercises–biking, running, swimming–are powered by the lower body.

Husband-and-wife team Jimmy Leu and Beatrice Chu created Flyfit, a fitness monitor that is worn on the ankle, after Chu, an avid cyclist, got annoyed that other fitness trackers weren’t accurately recording her workouts. Several of the bestselling fitness trackers, including the Nike Fuelband, aren’t even recommended for cycling.

Flyfit just launched its Kickstarter page today and wants to raise $90,000 by March 25. The early bird package starts at $89 for the first 200 supporters and includes a tracker and two interchangeable ankle bands. Shipment of mass produced Flyfit bands are scheduled for August, while beta test versions will be sent out in May.

Flyfit is one of the latest entrants to the wearable tech market, but its creators want to differentiate by focusing specifically on measuring different leg movements for cycling, swimming, running, or stair climbing. Plus, it will appeal to people who dislike wristbands, which are meant to be worn all day, but tend to get in the way while typing, irritate your skin, or snag on sleeves.

Chu says that she wanted to create an ankle monitor after realizing that her wristbands did not register movements accurately if she gripped her bike’s handlebars too tightly. For avid cyclists, the Flyfit is meant to be a portable alternative to cadence sensors that are installed on bicycle frames. Leu points out that this is especially handy if you use a bike lending service, like Citi Bike in New York City, or workout at the gym. Like a cadence sensor, the Flyfit lets you track distance, speed, and rotations per minute (RPM).

The app connects to an iOS app with Bluetooth 4.0/LE and lets you see your exercise data in real time, as long as you are willing to keep your eye on your smartphone while working out. Flyfit’s creators are working on an Android app and its development will be speeded up if the project reaches its $150,000 stretch goal. They also plan to open Flyfit’s API, add an online racing game so you can compete with your friends, and perhaps integrate it with other apps like Nike Run Keeper.

The tracker consists of a hardware module that is powered by a rechargeable Li-ion battery and interchangeable bands that are currently available in five colors. It has a simple LED panel that lets you check what activity you are tracking and battery life. The Flyfit claims to have an eight-hour battery life with real-time syncing and can run up to a week in off-sync mode.

The Flyfit may remind some people of the infamous ankle monitor worn by certain celebrities, like Lindsay Lohan, while under house arrest. The Flyfit is small and easy to hide, however, and can be worn over or under socks, so I can definitely see it appealing to people who are intrigued by wearable tech but sick of the ubiquitous wristband.
