Apple iWatch Using Solar And Kinetic Charging?

Apple iWatch Using Solar And Kinetic Charging?

According to a New York Times article, Apple could very well come out with alternative energy sources for their smart watch (aka iWatch) in the form of solar energy or kinetic (motion) energy. It is just about certain that Apple worries about two main issues with smart watches: battery life and bulky designs. The good news is that design constraints will get better over time as long as smart watches remain a companion device instead of a full-blown computer in a speed arms race. (more…)

Limited Edition Toq Smartwatch Launches In White

qualcommBack in 2013, Qualcomm announced their Toq smartwatch. The watch was never intended to be released as a commercial product, but rather produced a reference design in which Qualcomm expected other companies to use in order to manufacturer smartwatches of their own. However it seems that interest in the device proved to be pretty high which led to Qualcomm selling the device themselves. Now the good news for those who might be a bit more fashion conscious is that if you thought black was rather boring, you might be pleased to learn that Qualcomm has announced that they will be offering a white color version of the Toq smartwatch which customers can go ahead and purchase via their website.

Apart from the new coat of paint, the internals of the Toq smartwatch remain the same as its black counterpart, although we should note that according to Qualcomm’s website, the white version of the Toq smartwatch is a limited edition model, so you might want to hurry if you don’t want to miss out on it! The Toq smartwatch is priced at $349.99 and will feature a 1.55-ich Mirasol display, Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity, Android smartphone compatibility as long as the device runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean or higher, and a 240mAh battery which Qualcomm boasts will last a few days before requiring a charge.

Seven States Look To Ban Google Glass On The Road

google-glass-exploitIs driving with Google Glass the same as talking on the phone, or texting while driving? While it would seem that the courts dismissed the ticket a woman in California got while driving with Google Glass would have set some kind of legal precedent, it seems that there are still many out there who aren’t enamored by the idea of someone wearing Google Glass while on the road. A new bill introduced by the Wyoming Senator, Floyd Esquibel, aims at banning the use of Google Glass and all other wearable computers during the operation of a vehicle.

According to Esquibel, “Common sense would tell you that you really don’t need to look at a little computer while driving, that it endangers you, your passengers and other drivers.” It would also seem that Wyoming is not alone in looking to ban the use of wearable computers while operating a vehicle. States such as Delaware, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, and West Virginia have reportedly expressed their interest in a similar ban as well. This kind of resistance is to be expected when introducing new technology as its uses and purpose have yet to be fully fleshed out. Perhaps down the line the ban could be lifted if Google’s self-driving cars ever get commercialized, but in the meantime what do you guys think? Do you agree with this ban?

    Google Glass Games Demoed

    google-glasses-kicked

Google’s wearable gadget has been making waves for well over a year now, but its still a long way from customers hands. Over the past year the company has gradually opened up the Explorer program to more people, and even if its not as hard to get your hands on a unit from eBay right now, the high prices are bound to drive away many early adopters. The gadget needs a lot of work before it is ready for public release, Google solved one major problem recently, the support for prescription glasses. The next step is enable Glass to do more, and today Google provides a taste of just that. The company has demoed mini Google Glass games in a bid to entice developers to starting developing games for its wearable gadget.

Prescription Google Glass Has Been Officially Announced

Wearing Google Glass with prescription glasses is probably not the most comfortable thing. Even though I don’t own a pair of Google Glass, putting 3D glasses on in the theater makes for an uncomfortable experience already, so I can only imagine what it might be like for Google Glass owners. Well the good news for those who are looking for a pair of prescription Google Glass is that it is finally here as Google has officially announced a handful of prescription Google Glass devices that will be part of the company’s “Titanium Collection”. These frames will be designed with titanium meaning that they will be relatively lightweight which we guess will help balance out any additional electronics that have been added.

The Titanium Collection has been designed for both men and women in mind, so there are no designs which might be thought of as more masculine or feminine. There will be four different designs to choose from: bold, curve, split, and thin, as well as two options for those who are looking for a sunglasses version of Google Glass. No word on how much these prescription Google Glasses will cost, but in the meantime you can check out the promotional video above for the prescription version of Google Glass. So, any explorers planning on picking up their own pair?

Oculus Rift Game Lets Players Diffuse A Bomb

With the Oculus Rift designed to be a virtual reality headset for gaming, safe to say it helps to create a very immersive gaming experience. We’ve seen some creative uses of the Oculus Rift, such as how it simulates a guillotine, as well as provide a freefalling simulation, and now thanks to a group of Canadian indie developers, they have created a game for the Oculus Rift that simulates diffusing a bomb called “Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes”. Created for the Global Game Jam, the game basically tasks one gamer with the Oculus Rift to do the diffusing, while the rest of the team will have to pore through various documents trying to determine the make of the bomb and how best to diffuse it.

The game will also take advantage of the Razer Hydra motion controller, presumably for the wearer of the Oculus Rift to perform the diffusing of the virtual bomb. This also means that unless you have both the Oculus Rift and the Razer Hydra, you’d be out of luck if you wanted to try the game for yourself. According to the developers, there was a lot more features that they would have liked to add to the game but couldn’t as they were pressed for time. Such features included sensors that would prevent gamers from flipping the bomb over, panels that required unscrewing, and so on. All in all it’s a pretty clever idea and you can check it out in the video above.

Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 Rumored To Be More Fashionable, Could Sport A Flexible Display

Samsung-Galaxy-Gear-47When the Samsung Galaxy Gear was announced last year, it was met with a lot of enthusiasm. After all not only was Samsung joining the wearable tech race, but many were also interested to see what Apple’s rival could have in store for them. While Samsung made a good effort with the Galaxy Gear, flaws such as limited device compatibility and poor battery life (about a day’s worth, last we checked) prevented it from going on to be a huge success. Perhaps Samsung is learning from their mistakes or perhaps they are trying something new, but according to a report from ZDNet Korea, the Galaxy Gear 2 is expected to be something of a radical departure from its predecessor.

According to the report which was based on tips from unnamed Samsung officials, the Galaxy Gear 2 will feature a major redesign and will launch as more of a fashion product rather than a technological gadget. It has also been suggested that it will feature a flexible/curved display. This particular rumor is not completely out of the question as Samsung has shown off its curved displays before, such as in the Galaxy Round, so for them to make a watch with a curve display is possible. Their sources go on to state that the Galaxy Gear 2 could even be announced in London, with the announcement taking place in March or April, less than a year from the original Galaxy Gear announcement because apparently Samsung is worried about Apple and LG launching their own wearable devices. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but hopefully Samsung will learn from the mistakes of the Galaxy Gear and surprise us with a successor.
