Qualcomm Toq Smartwatch Price Receives $50 Cut

Qualcomm Toq Smartwatch Price Receives $50 Cut

We saw a number of smartwatches being released last year and the trend is expected to continue this year as well. Qualcomm, commonly known for the mobile chips that it makes, also released its very own smartwatch called the Toq. At $350 a pop, the Toq might not be everyone’s cup of tea. If you have been waiting to purchase this smartwatch then you’re in luck this week. In honor of the International Consumer Electronics Show 2014 that’s well underway in Las Vegas right now, the company has slashed $50 off the Toq’s price.

That’s right, you can now purchase a Qualcomm Toq smartwatch for $300. The deal runs through January 11. Toq touts Qualcomm’s Mirasol display, which gives it a leg up on its competitors. Apart from that, its pretty similar to all of the other smartwatches that we saw last year. Qualcomm isn’t expected to unveil a new wearable device at CES 2014, but there have been rumors that a lot of its competitors will be showcasing their latest smartwatches, which will definitely be making the headlines. Perhaps its an effort to hog some of the limelight, but it does bring a $50 discount for you, so head on down to Qualcomm’s website and pick up a Toq if you so desire.

Samsung Might Be Teasing Galaxy Gear Successor On Twitter

Samsung Might Be Teasing Galaxy Gear Successor On Twitter

Late last year we heard that Samsung had already started working on a Galaxy Gear successor after multiple rumors came in claiming that sales of the first Galaxy Gear were below expectations. While the company hasn’t denied that another smartwatch is on the cards for 2014, it hasn’t exactly said when we can expect a successor. The official Twitter account of Samsung Mobile UK seems to have teased a new wearable device from Samsung. It tweeted an image, asking people “What do you want Samsung to unveil in 2014?”

On the left of the image there’s a Galaxy Gear with the year it was released in mentioned below. To the right, there’s an empty space with the words “What’s Next?” and 2014 written underneath, which definitely means that whatever it is, its going to be released this year. Now it could go both ways, this product might be the Galaxy Gear 2 or an entirely different wearable device, its too soon to be sure right now. Can we expect an announcement at CES 2014? It has only been over three months since the original Galaxy Gear came out. Perhaps we might get to see a new wearable device at MWC which takes place next month, where Samsung is also expected to unveil the Galaxy S5.

Haloband Lets You Control Your Smartphone With A Tap On Your Wrist

    Haloband product

The rise of mobile has given me so much: 24/7 connections with friends around the world, information exactly when I need it, the ability to track my fitness and health goals. Unfortunately, it’s also given me a complex about my giant sausage fingers and their constant inability to navigate the tiny keys on my smartphone’s slippery touchscreen. Sometimes I think I should have just bought a BlackBerry.

When I read about Haloband on their Kickstarter page, I felt like the Shanghai-based startup was speaking directly to me: “Everyone has trouble in locking and unlocking smartphones. The frequency usually hurts phones’ screen and keys, as well as our hearts. So we decided it’s time to do something.”

Haloband is a silicone wristband embedded with an NFC chip and lets you operate your choice of functions by tapping your Android smartphone on your wrist. It’s also linked to a cloud account, which means you can save your ID as well as information to share with other mobile devices. After setting up your wristband with the Haloband app, you can use it to unlock your phone, take photos or send emergency alerts, among other options. To get an idea of what Haloband can do, watch their hilarious Kickstarter video embedded above (“I’m from the future. If you scan my wrist, you can get my business card information. This is my information, from my wrist, on your phone. Because I’m from the future.”)
    Haloband Tap
For those of you who think Haloband is pointless (and I’ve seen a few comments saying that), the wristband can be helpful for people with repetitive stress injuries and other issues with their hands. I have RSI that affects my wrists and thumbs, and I can see some of Haloband’s functions making my smartphone use a little easier when I have a flare-up of pain. It looks like there are plenty of people who agree with me about its usefulness–the project has already raised almost double its $10,000 goal on Kickstarter and its early bird specials are closed, but you can still select from several options, starting from just $25 for a black or white Haloband. Funding closes on Jan. 16 and the bands are scheduled to ship in February.

Haloband was developed by a Shanghai-based team that includes a former Intel engineer and focuses on NFC technology. They plan to release an open API so other developers can create their own Haloband apps and help smartphone users wrist easy (rimshot).

Pebble To Announce Something Special For CES 2014

Pebble To Announce Something Special For CES 2014Interested in a smartwatch? There are a few companies out there at the moment offering such products, such as Motorola, Sony, Samsung, and Pebble, who might not have the same amount of clout as the other companies, but certainly made waves with its Kickstarter project from back in 2012. Given that 2014 appears to be the year of smartwatches, with expected entrances from the likes of Apple, Pebble would definitely need to step up their game and come CES 2014, perhaps the company might have something new to show us. According to Pebble’s blog, the company has something to show us, something “special” to be exact. Given that the company’s focus appears to be smartwatches at the moment, chances are we could be looking at an improved/upgraded version of the original Pebble watch.

Of course it could be something else entirely so we guess we will just have to wait and see. Pebble is expected to make their announcement at 11AM PST on the 6th of January, so do check back with us then for all the details! So what do you guys think? What does Pebble have in store for us, and if it is a smartwatch, do you think Pebble has what it takes to take on the likes of Samsung, Apple, and even Google, all of whom have vast amounts of resources available to them?

Google Glass Price Expected To Be $600

Google Glass Price Expected To Be $600

There has been a lot of speculation about Google Glass and when the company is finally going to open it up to the public. The first wave of Glass units were offered for sale to select “Explorers.” Over the past year Google gradually opened up its Explorer program to more and more people. Earlier this week the company allowed Google Play Music All Access subscribers to purchase Glass, a sign that its gearing for a public launch. It is expected that Google Glass might be launched for the public in April 2014, and that it may be priced at $600.

There’s no doubt in the fact that Google can’t charge for Glass what it requires Explorers to pay for their units, $1,500. The average consumer is probably not going to want to pay an exuberant amount for a smart glass, despite the fact that it is probably one of the most hyped wearable device out there. The price of Google’s wearable device has been debated a lot, some believe it is imperative for the company to keep it under $500 if it wants to attract the average consumer. Robert Scoble hears that its more likely for Glass to be priced around $600, what effect that would have on prospective buyers, only time will tell.
