Pebble Smart Watch Update for IOS 7 and SDK 2.0

Today Pebble unveiled its software update with deeper integration with iOS7and its brand new SDK 2.0.

Pebble became very famous when the company raised over 10.2 million dollars from over 69,000 backers on Kickstarter. Since the product started to ship in January 2013, 190,000 Pebble watches are now worn by happy users and over 50 applications are available in iTunes and Google Play, a total of 2,200 apps and faces are on mypebblefaces.com and 80,000 watchfaces were created on watchfacegenerator.de.

Samsung Might Make A Google Glass Rival

Samsung Might Make A Google Glass Rival

Wearable technology is all the rage these days and a lot of companies, both big and small, have jumped on the bandwagon. Smartwatches have lead the way in this particular arena this year, whereas Google continued to make waves with the Google Glass. Samsung launched its Galaxy Gear smartwatch, but apparently return rates of the gadget are very high. The company is already rumored to be working on Galaxy Gear 2 and today at its Analyst Day event in South Korea, Samsung Vice Chairman and CEO Kwon Oh-hyun told analysts that the company has been spending significant resources towards several new technologies, which includes “wearables.”

According to The Wall Street Journal, which was in attendance, the slide that accompanied Kwon’s comment showed off a Galaxy Gear and eyeglasses that looked like a Google Glass rival. Could this mean that Samsung has been working on smart eyeglasses of its own? It is quite possible that Samsung has prototypes of such a product, but so far no additional information about them has been leaked. Just last month it was rumored that Samsung is developing its Google Glass rival which is going to be released in April or May 2014 as Gear Glass. Samsung is yet to confirm if it has such a product up its sleeve.

Woman Cited For Driving With Google Glass Plans To Fight

Woman Cited For Driving With Google Glass Plans To Fight

We reported last week how a woman, Cecilia Abadie, was cited for driving with Google Glass. She was actually pulled over for speeding, but was given a citation for driving with Google Glass when the California Highway Patrol officer saw that she was wearing Google’s much sought after wearable device. This particular citation is usually given to drivers who’re distracted by a TV screen or a video while driving, Abadie tells the Associated Press that she plans to fight the citation. Whatever the outcome is, it will definitely set a precedent that will be quite important in the future, as authorities re-examine laws to regulate the use of such technology, which will one day become mainstream.

Abadie says that “the laws are very outdated,” and that they’re not clear enough. She believes that she shouldn’t have been cited as she wasn’t using her Glass unit when allegedly going 80 mph in a 65 mph zone, “The Glass was on, but I wasn’t actively using it,” Abadie claims. She also terms it as more of a solution to the cellphone problem, saying that Glass makes navigation easier than GPS devices or smartphones. While Abadie says she’s “pretty sure” that she’ll fight, it can be argued that even using Glass for navigation while driving constitutes as a distraction. Concrete legislation will definitely be required to end the uncertainty as Google Glass and other wearable devices gradually enter the mainstream. New Jersey, West Virginia and Delaware are already ahead of the pack, with legislators having introduced bills to specifically ban the use of Google Glass while driving.

Google Glass Accessory Store Goes Live

Google Glass Accessory Store Goes Live

Google Glass is yet to be launched for the public, but there’s already a lot of hype surrounding Google’s wearable gadget. The company has only offered it to a select few people who’re called “Explorers.” A few days ago the company announced that it will now be rolling out updated units of Google Glass to Explorers. Its evidently ramping up production, as it will soon allow Explorers to invite three people they want to the Glass program, who’ll be able to purchase their own units. Apparently Google will allow sell accessories for the wearable gadget, as screenshot of a Google Glass accessory store has surfaced online.

It is believed that this accessory store went live just recently, though it doesn’t appear to be accessible unless and until you have a Glass unit. Among the accessories being offered are the new mono earbuds, that Google has replaced the bone conduction speaker with. Mono earbuds cost $50 on the Google Glass accessory store. An extra cable, microfiber pouch and charger combo and clear shield are also on sale, for $50 and $75 respectively. There may also be sunglasses from Maul Jim and Zeal Optics, though they’re reportedly not available right now in the store, perhaps they’ll be added at a later date. When does Google intend to sell Glass to the public? If rumors are to be believed, sometime next year. [Image via Nick Starr]

Microsoft Executive Believes Wearable Devices Are 3-5 Years Away From Mainstream

Microsoft Executive Believes Wearable Devices Are 3 5 Years Away From Mainstream

This year we have heard a lot of chatter about the future of wearable devices. We’ve seen a number of companies detail their smartwatches, many of them seeking to achieve their crowdfunding goals. We saw Samsung, Sony, Qualcomm and a few other major companies release their smartwatches. Google continued to make rounds with its Google Glass, which is expected to be released to the public next year. What about Microsoft though? Does Redmond plan on entering the wearable technology market? Seems so, it has been rumored that there are a couple of gadgets being developed at Microsoft. One company executive has reportedly said that despite all of the hype surrounding wearable devices, they’re not likely to enter the mainstream market until 3-5 years from now.

The comment, picked up by Focus Taiwan, was made by Microsoft’s corporate vice president and chairman of its Asia-Pacific research group, Zhang Ya-qin. He expects to see a lot of “try-outs” of such devices in the coming years, devices which are likely to include watches and eyeglasses. Ya-qin says that such devices will require more time, “maybe three to five years in development,” before we can see them in the mainstream market. Though this obviously doesn’t mean that Microsoft won’t come out with a “try-out” of its own within this time period. Only recently the company was rumored to be testing prototypes for “internet-connected eyewear,” basically its own Google Glass rival.

Updated Google Glass Units Being Released For ‘Explorers’ Later This Year

Updated Google Glass Units Being Released For Explorers Later This Year

Google Glass units have only been provided to a select few people called “Explorers,” who have been testing it out for quite some time now. Google has continued to refine the software with its monthly Glass updates, but it has now announced that updates to the hardware have also been made. Existing Glass Explorers will be able to “swap out” their existing units for new ones later this year. It hasn’t been clarified if Explorers will have to pay for these updated Glass units.

The company says that these hardware updates make Glass compatible with “future lines of shades and prescription frames,” which would look somewhat like the modified Google Glass attached to shades that we saw recently. The second edition of Google Glass also includes a mono earbud, which will replace the bone conduction speaker found in the existing version. Google has also said that Explorers will receive three invites to give out to the Google Glass program in the coming weeks. They can invite three people to join the program who can then purchase their own Glass unit online for $1,500. No word as yet on the public release of Google Glass, it is expected to be released sometime next year.

Google Glass Store Reportedly Being Built On A Barge In San Francisco Bay

Google Glass Store Reportedly Being Built On A Barge In San Francisco Bay

Here’s a crazy news. Apparently our favorite internet search giant is building a Google Glass Store in San Francisco Bay, this according to KPIX which claims that it has learnt that Google is building a “floating marketing center” just to promote its wearable gadget. Only recently a rather mysterious barge was spotted moored to Treasure Island, San Francisco. There’s a large structure built on top of the barge that’s raising obvious questions. CNET weighed in as well, voicing the possibility that perhaps its a new data center for Google. But doesn’t a “floating marketing center” have a better ring to it?

KPIX further claims that Google will actually tow the completed structure from Treasure Island to SFO’s Fort Mason, there the barge will reportedly be anchored and the facility opened to the public. Apparently construction has been stopped since Google doesn’t have a permit. A BCDC, that’s the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission, official is quoted as saying that discussions with Google have been held on “hypothetical operations” on the water, but it hasn’t clarified exactly what it intends to use the facility for. The director of the commission is quoted as saying that to warrant a permit, Google will have to satisfy them that what it is building can’t be built on land. A project like this would obviously be heavily funded, and if a permit fails to come through, Google might end up losing a substantial amount of money. Google itself hasn’t commented on this report, it hasn’t acknowledged that it has anything to do with this barge structure or that it is indeed building a “floating marketing center” for Google Glass, which by the way, isn’t due until 2014.
