Nike FuelBand Isn’t Going Away, For Now

On Friday an online report claimed that due to significant layoffs at Nike’s digital sports division, the hardware side of FuelBand was going to be shut down. Nike is a prominent company involved in the wearable market so its exit would certainly have attracted headlines. However it appears that the FuelBand isn’t going anywhere, at least for now. The company has confirmed that despite layoffs it is not going to give up on the FuelBand just yet.

In a statement provided to Re/code, a Nike spokesperson said that the FuelBand remains an “important part” of the company’s business, adding that Nike will continue to improve FuelBand App, launch new METALUXE colors as well as sell and support the wearable device itself “for the foreseeable future.” The statement does leave a lot of room open for the possibility that Nike might now launch any new products in the FuelBand lineup, even though it has decided to support existing products.

Sources who spoke with the scribe claim that Nike executives debated for months what to do with the FuelBand division, which is apparently weighing the company down due to high expenses, low margins as well as manufacturing challenges.

One thing is for sure though, even if Nike exists, its not like the FuelBand will leave a hole that won’t be filled. There are already a plethora of activity tracking and fitness related wearable devices on the market. With Apple expected to throw its hat in the ring as well, customers will remain spoilt for choice nonetheless.

Facebook Acquisition Will Make Sense In A Year, According To Oculus VR’s Founder

When Facebook announced their acquisition of Oculus VR, we’re sure the company was not expecting such a huge amount of backlash for both developers and consumers alike. Oculus VR has reassured gamers that Facebook will be allowing them autonomy and given Facebook’s previous acquisitions such as Instagram, we have no reason to believe Facebook has any intentions of meddling.

In a recent video interview (transcribed by the folks at GameSpot), Oculus VR’s founder, Palmer Luckey, stated that the acquisition by Facebook will make sense to its critics a year from now. “Knowing behind the scenes what’s going on and what we need money to do and what we’re going to be able to do with this deal, I know for myself that it’s the best that we could possibly do.” (more…)

As far as the wearable market goes Samsung has evidently told everyone that it is not kidding around. Anyone can buy Google Glass in the U.S. today provided that they reside in the country, customers will need a U.S. shipping address. No, Google hasn’t publicly released its hotly anticipated wearable gadget yet. Its merely expanding the Explorer Program, so Google Glass units are only being offered today.

Since its selling Explorer Edition units, customers will have to pay Explorer Edition prices. If you want to pick up a Glass unit today be prepared to shell out $1,500. Customers will be able to choose colors and a free accessory such as a frame or shade of their choice. Additional accessories like earbuds, a charging kit and carrying case can also be added to the order.

Once the order has been placed, Google promises that it will ship your unit within five to seven business days. Customers that want to use Glass with prescription lenses will need to buy them for the unit as a separate item. Glass fans outside the U.S. are out of luck. Google hasn’t said when it plans to expand the Explorer Program outside the country. It may not even do so, considering the fact that the public release of Google Glass is expected later this year anyway.

80,000 Oculus Rift Devices Have Been Sold to Date

80,000 Oculus Rift Devices Have Been Sold to DateWhile virtual reality technology has been around for a while now, it’s safe to say that things really started to catch on with the development and the release of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. This is probably thanks to developers who have been making efforts to port games onto the device, thus giving older games a new lease on life in a more immersive environment.

Now the Oculus Rift isn’t exactly available for mass consumption yet but there are units being sold to those looking to help develop games for it and experiment, but exactly how many of such units have been sold so far? Well according to Oculus VR, it seems that they have managed to sell around 85,000 Oculus Rift units to date, which we have to say is mighty impressive.

This is according to the company who revealed to TechCrunch that they managed to sell 25,000 units of the second-gen Oculus Rift kit which was revealed at CES 2014 and went on sale on the 19th of March. This is then combined with sales of the first-gen kit which has managed about 60,000 units until the announcement of the second-gen kit.

Given that these units are aimed at developers and not end-users, we have to say that this is setting a pretty good precedent, and might even explain why Facebook was so interested in the company and offered to acquire the company for a whopping $2 billion. The move was not well-received by many who voiced their displeasure at the acquisition, but hopefully with Facebook’s backing and resources, the development of the device and its technology will move at a faster pace.
