Samsung Patent Reveals Earphone With Heads Up Display

Samsung Patent Reveals Earphone With Heads Up DisplayWe have heard the rumors that Samsung could be working on a Google Glass rival, although as it stands we have only heard the rumors and seen patents that points to such a device being a possibility. Now thanks to a newly discovered patent, another possible design of Samsung’s Glass rival has been sighted.

In this particular patent, it describes an earpiece that comes with an integrated heads up display, with the display resembling what we’ve seen in Google Glass. Not only does this setup provide the wearer with a display, but it could also provide audio feedback, such as notifications, music, movies, and video playback. (more…)

Oculus VR Founder Thinks Television Will Be Irrelevant In The Future

Oculus VR Founder Thinks Television Will Be Irrelevant In The FutureEvery year at CES, we look forward to tech companies making television-related announcements. After all with all sorts of media content being available on the television, we’re sure customers are looking for something amazing to watch it on, right? However the question is, will this trend continue in the next couple of decades?

Speaking to the folks at Maximum PC, Oculus VR’s founder, Palmer Luckey, shared his thoughts on the traditional television and believed that in the next couple of decades, the television could eventually be deemed irrelevant. Instead he believes that virtual reality headsets, such as the Oculus Rift will be one of the ways consumers could consume content in the future.

“Why in the world would you buy a 60-inch TV that, even if it worked dirt cheap for that it’s still gonna cost a lot to ship it, to make it from raw materials. Yeah, I mean a VR headset is gonna be much better and much cheaper and you can take it anywhere.” Luckey’s statements seem to line up nicely with reports that a nature documentary is currently being filmed with the Oculus Rift in mind.

The documentary will allow users to take in the sights of Borneo in a field of view that they might not be able to experience if they were watching it on a regular television. While the Oculus Rift has been primarily thought of as a gaming accessory, its potential to replace television as a source of entertainment is there as well. What do you guys think? Do you agree that one day we’ll all be wearing virtual reality headsets and watching our shows through it instead of the television?

Gear Fit Compatible With Non-Samsung Devices

Gear Fit Compatible With Non Samsung Devices

Samsung made waves in the wearable market this year by launching two new smartwatches and an activity tracker. Last year the company jumped on this bandwagon by launching the Galaxy Gear smartwatch alongside Galaxy Note 3. The new Gear smartwatches are a bit different, they don’t run on Android, but Samsung didn’t address one of the most criticized aspects of its wearables, the fact that they don’t officially support non-Samsung devices. Though it turns out that the Gear Fit activity tracker is actually compatible with the likes of HTC One M8, Nexus 5 and more.

    iWatch Flexible OLED Display Rumored

    iWatch Flexible OLED Display Rumored

Rumors about the Apple iWatch are a dime a dozen. For the past couple of years it has been extensively rumored that Apple is working on a smartwatch, though nothing has materialized just yet. While the company has said it is going to enter new product categories this year, it hasn’t explicitly confirmed if wearables are on its mind just yet. No one really knows if or when the iWatch is going to be unveiled. A new rumor out of Vietnam claims that the iWatch is destined for the market come September.

Nature Documentary Being Filmed Specifically For The Oculus Rift

Nature Documentary Being Filmed Specifically For The Oculus RiftOne of the perks of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset is that it can immerse the wearer in whatever it is that they’re doing, whether it be for gaming or for video watching. Now for those who own the Oculus Rift device, you might be interested to learn that Sir David Attenborough is working on a new nature documentary that has been designed to be viewed on the Oculus Rift.

The programme will be titled “Conquest of the Skies” and is currently in the process of being filmed by Atlantic Productions. According to the programme, it should allow viewers to immerse themselves in a full 360-degree view of Borneo. According to Atlantic’s commercial director, John Morris (via realscreen), “We’re now filming for the Oculus Rift, so when we filmed our recent flight in Borneo, we filmed with an eight-camera rig, so you got the full 360° experience.”

It sounds like a pretty cool idea and Morris even expects that such films could be one of the ways that the Oculus Rift could appeal to non-gamers. In a way that makes sense because as it stands, the Oculus Rift is primarily seen as a gaming device and has been mostly used in conjunction with video games to make them seem more real and immersive.

However by using it to view movies, it could offer up an entirely brand new experience, not to mention with the screens right before your eyes, you might not even need a large screen TV anymore. Facebook announced last month that they would be acquiring Oculus VR, the company behind Oculus Rift. While it’s good news for the company and the technology, since Facebook has the resources to help them progress, not every was smitten by the deal.

Reporter Assaulted For Wearing Google Glass In Public

Reporter Assaulted For Wearing Google Glass In PublicWhen Google unveiled Glass, it was to much applause and fanfare. After all it was a relatively new piece of technology and after all the movies we’ve seen involving heads up displays, we could finally be able to get one for ourselves! Unfortunately not everyone feels the same way and while there are some who might feel uncomfortable around people wearing it, there are those who would openly assault a Glass-wearer.

We’ve seen this happen before and it has happened again to reporter Kyle Russell who had his Glass snatched from his face and flung to the ground without any prior provocation. According to Russell, he and his colleague were covering a protest which involved a Google employee who was evicting several tenants after buying a home in an area.

“The aforementioned colleague and I were on our way to the 16th Street BART station when a person put their hand on my face and yelled, “Glass!” In an instant the person was sprinting away, Google Glass in hand.” Russell attempted to give chase but was unable to catch up in time before the person smashed the device onto the ground and ran off.

We suppose it could have been Russell being at the wrong place and wearing the wrong device. After all it could easily be construed that Russell was an ardent support of Google, after all why else would he be wearing their products, right? However at the same time it does seem ridiculous that anyone would assault someone, unprovoked mind you, over a piece of technology.

However this kind of reaction is to be expected. After all a recent poll has revealed that 72% of people would not wear Glass in public and that privacy concerns would hold them back from purchasing it. This probably comes at a bad time especially when Google has announced that for one day only, they would be selling Glass to the public on the 15th of April. While professionals have found Glass to be immensely useful, we guess the general public does not feel the same way.

What do you guys think? Is Google Glass a little ahead of its time, or do people just need to be better educated on what Glass is and what it can do? After all it’s not that much different from someone holding a smartphone and using it to record a video.

Insurance Companies Could Subsidize iWatch, According To Analyst

Insurance Companies Could Subsidize iWatch, According To AnalystApple’s iPhones are typically subsidized by carriers, which makes sense since carriers provide the service that the iPhone needs in order for some of its functions to work, like making calls or sending text messages (VoIP and instant messenger apps not included). That being said, does it make sense then that Apple’s rumored iWatch could be subsidized by health insurance companies then?

This is according to Timoth Arcuri, an analyst with Cowen & Co. who has recently speculated that there is a chance that Apple could figure out a deal with health insurance companies to help subsidized the cost of the iWatch. In Arcuri’s research note, “We continue to believe it is possible the product (iWatch) is backstopped by some sort of insurance subsidization model similar to the carrier subsidization model for iPhone.” (more…)

Confirmed: Google Glass Will Be Sold To The Public On 15th April

Confirmed: Google Glass Will Be Sold To The Public On 15th AprilEarlier today we reported that there was a possibility that Google would let anyone have the opportunity to buy themselves a pair of Google Glass, albeit for only one day. The good news is that if you did not manage to get into the Explorer program but would love to own a pair of Google Glass, you’re in luck as Google has since confirmed that this was indeed happening.

However Google warns that spots are limited and given how popular Glass is, we can only imagine that they will sell out really quick, so if this is something you’re interested in, you probably need to have your mouse on the “buy” button and get ready to start clicking once it goes live next Tuesday on the 15th of April.

The Glass unit that Google will be selling will be the same unit that other Explorers have been buying, which also means that it is not priced very consumer-friendly and will set you back $1,500, so if you’re not prepared to make that investment, perhaps you’ll want to wait for the consumer version to be released where hopefully it will be cheaper and more affordable.

Google has also announced that they are planning to include its designer frames so if you were worried that Glass might clash with your fashion or style, then these designer frames are definitely worth checking out. The sale of Glass will kick off at 9AM EDT so if this sounds like something you might be interested in, head on over to Google’s website to sign up your interest and Google will remind you when the sale goes live. So, any takers?

The device features Bluetooth connectivity, sonic technology, an 8-axis accelerometer, a magnetometer, and a gyroscope. The companion application will show people how to brush their teeth more efficiently and will record their brushing sessions to show their progress in a user-friendly mobile dashboard.

Similar products have been spotted recently, such as the Oral-B electrical connected brush developed by giant Procter & Gamble, however the device I saw at MWC does not feature the same 3 sensors except for a pressure sensor, and no word was shared on the future plan to build a gaming ecosystem. Most recently, I met with Grush co-founder who showed me a prototype of a non-electrical connected toothbrush with an early stage demo of 3D games. Grush will be available for pre-order in 2015.

On Kickstarters the first 500 funders will be offered a Kolibree toothbrush for only $99, with a price point of $129 for the next 1,000 supporters. For only $149,  backers will be able to choose from a rnage fo nice colors: Feather White, Dove Gray, Berry Blue or Cerise Pink.

The development kit is available for $199 with beta access to API. The dentists can buy an educational software package for $299.
