72 Percent Of People Surveyed Against Google Glass Due To Privacy

When Google Glass was first unveiled at Google I/O in 2012 it immediately caught the world’s attention. There was curiosity and fascination about this seemingly futuristic product. Then followed concern which lead to intense debate. Glass has sparked a fervent privacy debate, given that its so easy for someone to record or photography anyone without their knowledge or consent. Apart from that, there are concerns related to data privacy as well as security. Research firm Toluna recently surveyed people and asked if they would be willing to wear Glass in public. 72 percent were against the idea, and also said that privacy concerns could stop them from buying the gadget altogether.

While people are worried about data security, the biggest concern appears to be related to being on the other side of Glass. People really don’t want to be secretly recorded. Moreover, the people who took the survey also said they were afraid of wearing it in public as it would be too distracting. They could get distracted by notifications etc and may end up walking onto a busy street or falling down a manhole.

One of three people also said that they were afraid of getting mugged if they wore Glass in public. While the survey looked at the U.S. exclusively, one can be certain that similar sentiments exist in other markets as well. These are only some of the challenges Google has to face and potentially be answerable for when it publicly releases Google Glass.

Google May Allow Anyone To Buy Glass For One Day

Google May Allow Anyone To Buy Glass For One Day

Since being unveiled at Google I/O 2012, the company has strictly controlled spread of Google Glass units. It launched an Explorer Program and gradually provided units to interested individuals, provided that they were U.S. residents and were willing to pay $1,500 for the privilege. Since then the company has greatly expanded the program by opening it up to Play Music All Access subscribers and even allowing friend referrals. If a latest report is true, then for one day Google may allow anyone in the U.S. to purchase Glass.

A leaked slide obtained by The Verge shows that on April 15th at 6 am PDT Google may announce a limited time expansion of the Explorer Program. It is imperative to note here that this doesn’t mark the start of Glass’s public release. Its classified as an expansion of the program in the slide, which aims to put units in hands of as many people as it can. A free frame or shade may also be included with the purchase.

Just because its opening up the floodgates for one day doesn’t mean Google won’t charge you anything. Its mentioned in the slide that the purchase will cost the usual $1,500. Given the interest people have displayed in paying premium on eBay for a unit, its likely that Google may be able to sell quite a few units.

There are two reasons why the company might be expanding Explorer Program, albeit for one day. Google probably wants to get it out to as many people as it can in order to expedite testing and development prior to the public release. The company might also be unloading Explorer edition stock before the release. Since Explorer edition units were never meant to be publicly released, its highly unlikely that Google would have produced more units that it required, so it may very well be able to clear stock come April 15th. We still have to wait for official word from Mountain View though.

Google Glass Being Tested By The US Air Force

Google Glass Being Tested By The US Air ForceIt is no secret that Google Glass has a myriad of potential uses, although on the consumer front, it seems that non-Glass wearers are taking offense to people who do. Perhaps it could be that they’re worried about the invasion of their privacy, perhaps it could be for other reasons.

However on the professional front, it seems that Glass is finding more use in the field, like in the medical field for instance where we recently reported that due to the ability to pull up patient records on the fly, a doctor could have potentially saved his patient’s life. That being said, on the military front it seems that there is appreciation for the Glass device as well.

According to a report from VentureBeat, the US Air Force’s Battlefield Air Targeting Main-Aided (K)nowledge (BATMAN) research team has been testing the use of Google Glass in the Air Force, and so far they are pretty happy with the results.

This is attributed to the fact that Glass is a low-powered and a low-footprint kind of device, not to mention the way the device is worn will not obstruct vision, which we guess is extremely important in the battlefield.

It has also been suggested that the research team is looking into developing some kind of proprietary software that can be integrated into Glass’s current software that would be military specific. This sounds like our previous report where the company Wearable Intelligence helped created a specific piece of software designed for doctors, although in this case it would be only for the military.

Of course it remains to be seen how in the heat of battle will such a device perform, or how it might hold up (will it be too fragile?), but for now it sounds like a pretty good idea.

iWatch Circuit Board Samples Reportedly Being Sent To Apple [Rumor]

iWatch Circuit Board Samples Reportedly Being Sent To Apple [Rumor]According to a report from yesterday, it was rumored that Apple could finally be taking the wraps off its rumored iWatch later this year, Q3 2014 to be exact. Now thanks to a new rumor from DigiTimes, that timeframe has been somewhat corroborated as they are reporting that there are at least three different firms who will be supplying Apple with samples of flexible circuit boards that could be used in the iWatch.

The companies that are allegedly involved are Flexium Interconnect, Career Technology, and Zhen Ding Technology Holding. The latter is actually a familiar name as they currently supply other components to Apple, so perhaps there might be some truth to DigiTimes’ claims after all. Then again the publication has had some pretty spotty history when it comes to Apple rumors, so do take it with a grain of salt for now.

We’ve not even come to the middle of the year and we’ve already seen smartwatch efforts from a bunch of different companies, like LG, Samsung, and Motorola. While Google has yet to make their own hardware, they did reveal Android Wear which is a version of Android designed for wearable devices.

A release of Apple’s rumored iWatch later this year does make sense especially if they hope to compete with the rest of the competition. Any later and Apple would essentially have to play catch up instead of being considered one of the pioneers. Hopefully we will learn more about the rumored iWatch soon so stay tuned for more updates.

LG G Watch Pegged For July Release, Priced At £180

LG G Watch Pegged For July Release, Priced At £180When Google announced Android Wear, they also announced some companies that would be taking advantage of its platform which included LG and Motorola. While LG did tease some press images of the G Watch on its Facebook page, the company did not mention when we might be able to look forward to the device and how much it will cost, at least until now.

According to the folks at Pocket-lint, it seems that they have managed to confirm with LG the availability and pricing of the upcoming LG G Watch. Assuming it is a global release or perhaps a simultaneous release for certain markets, we can look forward to the LG G Watch hitting the shelves before July where it is expected to be priced around £180 in the UK, which is about $300 after conversion. Google Glass Could Have Helped A Doctor Save His Patient’s Life

Google Glass Could Have Helped A Doctor Save His Patients LifeThere are some who take offense to others wearing Google Glass. We guess it’s because they are worried that they are being secretly recorded and that it is an invasion of their privacy that they’re not taking too kindly to. Well perhaps those people might feel a little differently when they find out that by donning a pair of Google Glass, Dr. Steve Horng might have actually helped save a life.

According to Dr. Horng, he believes this was possible because Google Glass allowed him to pull up the patient’s medical history and allergy information without him having to go to a computer to check, thus saving him precious minutes. The patient in question was suffering from a massive brain bleeding and it was discovered that normal blood pressure medication would not have worked due to the patient’s allergy.

It is because of this that Dr. Horng was able to begin treatment immediately and could have potentially saved the patient from permanent disability or even death. “Google Glass enabled me to view this patient’s allergy information and current medication regimen without having to excuse myself to log in to a computer, or even lose eye contact.”

For those wondering, this is not your typical Google Glass that you will be able to purchase from Google. The device itself is a Glass but has been modified by a company called Wearable Intelligence who reformats the software to lock it down for specific uses and context, and in this case, the ability to call up patient information as well as speech recognition technology that can recognize medical terms.

At the moment these devices are being trialed at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Dr. Horng is one in five doctors that are currently testing it out.

Samsung Enables Vertical Display Orientation In Gear Fit

Samsung Enables Vertical Display Orientation In Gear Fit

Back in February, at the Mobile World Congress 2014, Samsung unveiled a trio of wearable devices. Apart from two smartwatches, the company also launched an activity tracker called Gear Fit. Apart from the fact that it also tells the time, the Gear Fit’s simple yet stunning AMOLED display gives users access to a wide variety of fitness related information. There was one caveat though that bugged people who played around with the tracker. The display would only be displayed horizontally regardless of where the tracker was on the wrist. It looks like Samsung has removed this limitation.

We have heard multiple reports that through a software update, the Gear Fit’s display gets vertical orientation as well. This should help make prolonged usage of the tracker more convenient. It is not known when Samsung intends to roll out this software update, though Gear Fit units with vertical orientation have already been seen in Samsung’s official stores at home in Korea.

Samsung’s new wearable devices will be released alongside the Galaxy S5 come April 11th. Presumably soon after the company may release this software update, which is immediately going to eliminate the pain for all customers who received their brand new activity trackers from Samsung next week.
