E Ink and Sonostar pair up for Mobius flexibledisplay smartwatch, we go handson at Computex

Earlier this week, E Ink announced its Mobius flexible display, a 1.73-inch touch-enabled panel for smartwatches. Now, the new screen has made its way onto the Computex exhibition floor in Taipei. Sonostar, a local manufacturer, has integrated the 320 x 240 grayscale panel within its new wearable, which the company is demonstrating for show attendees. Simply called “Smartwatch,” the product is little more than a mockup at this point, but it is expected to hit production sometime in Q3 of this year.

The two samples on hand were non-functional, unfortunately, but they did each contain a working Mobius panel — one displayed a sample Facebook notification, while the second had the time and date with a small low-res picture of a dog, along with battery and Bluetooth indicators up top. The watch itself was very lightweight, and while glare was clearly an issue today, there’s plenty of time for engineers to tweak things before this ships later in the year. The Smartwatch, which can stay powered for up to a week with each charge, will come in both black and white, and should be compatible with both Android and iOS devices. Pricing is not yet set, but representatives did confirm that it’ll be coming to the US.

Google Glass monthly update improves photos with HDR, captions

Google has committed to pushing software updates to its Glass headset each month, and a post on Google+ reveals this month’s tweaks are focusing on pictures. If you’re a fan of using the device for POV shots, it should take better pictures by capturing a sequence of images for improved low-light performance and HDR pictures in bright situations — check out a gallery of enhanced images at the source link below. Also new is a prompt to add a caption after you take a picture. Users can tap their headset, speak the caption and it’s automatically inserted. Last month’s XE5 update addressed a wider range of issues, but this one will make sure any impromptu pictures (with your subject’s full awareness and permission for the photo, we’re sure) are high quality.

Although smartwatch makers have had access to e-paper for a while, there have been few such displays tailor-made for our wrists. E Ink is more than willing to fill that void with a new, watch-oriented version of its Mobius screen. The flexible, 1.73-inch panel won’t floor anyone with its 320 x 240 grayscale picture, but it can be cut into timepiece-friendly shapes that take more abuse than a typical e-reader. More importantly for us end users, E Ink already has at least one hardware partner lined up: Sonostar is using the tiny Mobius for a smartwatch this summer, and the odds are that the company won’t be alone.

ARAIG gaming feeback suit hits Kickstarter in search of good funding vibrations

In spite of the company’s claims that feedback has always been localized on gaming controllers, this certainly isn’t the first time we’ve seen the phenomenon incorporated into a wearable. That said, the ARAIG (that’s As Real As It Gets, for the record) does wrap a lot of features into a nice looking package — well, about as nice as one can expect from a vibrating shirt that you wear while gaming. The ARAIG (sounds a bit like “ear ache”) features 16 points of feedback on the front, 16 on the back and eight on each side, a number of which are located in areas so as to offer the most muscle stimulation as they respond to what’s happening in the game.

You’ll also find a six speakers around the collar, offering a sort of surround sound to the wearer, as well as an admittedly somewhat clunky subwoofer on the back. Of course, ARAIG is still in its early stages, a few days into its Kickstarter campaign, so there may well be some changes to the suit in the months to come. In the meantime, the company’s hoping for a lofty $900,000 in crowdfunding. You can check out a video plea below or click the source link to contribute.

Google: ‘We won’t be approving any facial recognition Glassware at this time’

While the public decides how to deal with Google Glass-wearing cyborgs walking among us, there are already startups trying to add facial recognition to the device. That includes the MedRef for Glass app for Doctors and an API created by Lambda Labs that’s on the way. Unfortunately, apparently due to privacy concerns, a post tonight by the Project Glass team says that it will not approve any app using the tech for release — at least until it has some privacy protections in place. That’s the same standard it previously said would need to be met before it added facial recognition to its own services.

We’ve been listening closely to you, and many have expressed both interest and concern around the possibilities of facial recognition in Glass. As Google has said for several years, we won’t add facial recognition features to our products without having strong privacy protections in place. With that in mind, we won’t be approving any facial recognition Glassware at this time.

Without approval, we don’t expect to see any standard apps with the API built-in, however with the headset’s current wide open nature, we assume interested hackers will be able to get the software running if they so desire. So, how comfortable do you feel having a conversation with someone wearing Glass, considering third parties may add extra features even if Google itself is not involved? At university graduations, students often deck out their academic regalia with glittery text and other shiny objects to help family members identify them among the crowd. As you might expect, the design sophistication can vary depending on the youngster’s major, but at Cornell this year, one scholar clearly stole the show. Jeremy Blum, the proud new owner of a master’s degree in electrical engineering, one-upped his classmates with Control my Cap, a WiFi-connected headpiece that packs 16 350mA high-brightness LEDs. Blum installed four red, green, blue and white LEDs in a clear light diffuser attached to his stock grad cap using a 3D-printed holder. He then embedded a Raspberry Pi computer and a $20 Adafruit LCD module with keypad within a wrist-mounted holder he printed with a MakerBot Replicator. Finally, a simple mobile site served as an interface for attendees, who could submit colors for the cap to display. We bet his professors are very proud.

Pebble firmware update 1.11 arrives with UI improvements, Simplicity watchface

Pebble’s smartwatch might have launched with limited capabilities, but the list of things it can do keeps growing. Now that the company has released firmware version 1.11, you can add a few more features to that list. The update brings notification and set time UI changes, multiple notification viewing, the wearer’s current speed measured by RunKeeper, swaps the music app’s next and previous buttons and squashes a few bugs. It also installs the Simplicity watchface on the device that’s sure to make minimalists happy. Sadly, there’s nary a hint of a new game in sight so you’ll have to make do with Tetris and Snake whenever the mood for smartwatch gaming strikes. To get version 1.11, launch your Pebble smartphone app and tap “check for FW update.”

Internet Trends report shows a surge in sharing, mobile overtaking PCs

Mary Meeker’s Internet Report is often considered a technology bellwether, and it’s certainly living up to that reputation in the 2013 study. This year, the dominating trend is sharing: Meeker has noticed that many more of us are willing to publish our media and location data. People worldwide now share over 500 million photos a day through services like Facebook and Snapchat, while Dropcam, Soundcloud, YouTube and Waze are also growing quickly. Americans aren’t leading the trend, however. An estimated 15 percent of US internet users frequently share content online, while the world average is 24 percent.

Other findings? If it wasn’t evident before that mobile devices are taking over, it’s quite clear now. The Internet Report shows tablet shipments overtaking PCs at the end of 2012; meanwhile, mobile internet traffic is quickly surpassing the desktop in countries like China and South Korea. Many companies are leaning heavily on mobile for their income, too. The full Internet Trends report is available after the break for additional insights, although it’s currently bombarded by traffic — have some patience if it doesn’t load right away.

Tim Cook thinks Google Glass lacks broad appeal, but wearables are 'incredibly interesting'

Today on stage at the D11 conference, Tim Cook indicated that Apple’s interested in wearable tech, including Google Glass, even though he thinks it’s “tough to see it [Glass] having a broad-range appeal.” When asked about the current state of wearables, he mentioned that fitness devices like the Nike FuelBand (he owns one) perform well, but things that attempt to do more than one thing haven’t impressed him thus far.

Generally, he sees wearables as “an area that’s ripe for exploration” and that “there will be tons of companies involved” in making such devices. He also mentioned that biometric sensors, in particular, are an area of growth that Apple will be watching with interest, and Cook sees the potential of the wearables space to accelerate the industry further into a Post-PC era as smartphones and tablets did. When asked about Apple’s plans to make a wearable, Cook wouldn’t comment on the existence (or non existence) of an iWatch. So, while this is far from a confirmation of a forthcoming Apple wearable, it seems certain that the crew in Cupertino is considering them carefully.

Those who already own Google Glass are more likely than most to embrace new technologies like Nest’s thermostat, so it only makes sense that an especially eager adopter would find a way to combine the two. That would be James Rundquist and his new Glass Nest app: Glass owners now just have to announce that they’re coming home (or heading out) to make their Nest units change the climate. More exacting homeowners can fine-tune the temperature, too. While the utility is both unofficial and quite limited at this stage, Rundquist has posted source code that lets anyone expand on the project. If you’re in the rare position of owning both gadgets, we’d suggest giving Glass Nest and its code at least a cursory look.
