Google Glass is a lot of things, but it’s hardly a superstar when it comes to the world of sports. Though we’ve seen proof it is at least water resistant, it doesn’t feel particularly durable and isn’t entirely well-suited to wearing while, say, sweating profusely during a lengthy climb on a road bike. Recon Instruments has what it thinks is a solution: the Jet. It’s a pair of sporting sunglasses with an integrated, Android-powered display that could make things like running and cycling far more exciting — or at least far more information-packed. Recon Instruments reveals Recon Jet, a sports HUD that's so bright it need shades

We know Glass comes with some snap-on shades, which is no doubt great when casually vlogging in the sun. If you’re heading down a mountain, though, you’re going to need something a little more like Recon Jet. You may know Recon Instruments from its line of technolicious HUD ski goggles, but Jet sees the firm leap into more casual (yet no less useful) eyewear. Inside you’ll find a dual-core processor, WiFi, GPS, Ant+, Bluetooth and an HD camera, plus all the sensors you could want (altimeter, thermometer, accelerometer etc). Recon Jet comes with its own open platform (which typically has been based on Android), and will have some existing native apps (video streaming, Facebook integration, etc.) on display at Google I/O this week. Comparison with Mountain View’s own product will be inevitable, but we’re guessing that Recon hopes you’ll leave Glass on your desk, while popping Jet on for the weekend.

It’s been a little while since I last checked in with Glass, but it’s time to file another report and let you know how Glass is fitting in with my life — or, increasingly, how it isn’t. We’re on the eve of Google I/O, where Glass, in its near-current state, was unveiled to the world last year. I figure that by the end of this week the Glass landscape will have shifted, so before anything tilts too drastically, let’s take a final look at where we stand now.

Saturday Night Live’s Fred Armisen tries out Google Glass for real (video)

There’s a good chance that you, like us, enjoyed a certain Saturday Night Live sketch recently in which Weekend Update’s newly branded tech correspondent Randall Meeks gave his raw impressions of Google Glass — using a prop made of plastic and attached to a pair of sunglasses. There was a lot of shouting, twitching and, for us at least, laughing. Meeks is played by the incredibly talented Fred Armisen, also well-known for IFC’s surreally hilarious Portlandia. In reality, we learned, Armisen had never used Google Glass. That was a situation we were happy to fix.

MedRef for Glass uses facial recognition to identify patients, keeps health records

We’ve seen a few interesting apps built specifically for Google’s new headset but, to our knowledge MedRef for Glass is the first that recognize people’s faces. The basic functions aren’t anything terribly ground breaking: you can create and search patient files, and even add voice or photo notes. What makes Lance Nanek’s creation unique is its support for facial recognition. A user can snap a picture of a subject and upload it to the cloud, where it will search patient records for a match using the Betaface API. All of this can be done, relatively hands-free leaving a doctors well-trained mitts available to perform other necessary medical duties. There’s still a lot of work to do, and Nanek hopes that with more powerful hardware the facial recognition feature could be left running constantly, removing the need to snap and upload photos. In the meantime, if you’re one of the lucky few to have an Explorer edition of Google Glass you can install the package at the source link. Otherwise, you’ll have to make do with the demo video after the break.

Withings Smart Activity Tracker hits the FCC with a catchier Pulse nickname

Withings introduced its Smart Activity Tracker at CES with many details regarding how it worked, but few hints of just when it would reach our belts and wrists. Courtesy of an FCC approval, we now know that it’s relatively close. The exercise and sleep sensor has gone through US testing with no real surprises in hardware, but a much simpler branding strategy: the manual suggests the tracker will just be called the Pulse, which could help in a market full of one-word rivals. About all that’s left is for Withings to say exactly where and when we can get its new wearable.

Runtastic launches a GPS watch, fitness monitors and more in the US

Most app developers have few incentives to build their own hardware, let alone the resources. With 25 million mobile users, Runtastic has both — so it only makes sense that the company is bringing a slate of complementary exercise gear to the US for the first time. The initial catalog won’t shock cyclists and runners who have ever toyed with tracking their progress, but it’s certainly complete. Along with Runtastic’s take on a GPS watch ($150), there’s also an app-friendly heart rate monitor ($70), a speed sensor ($60), an armband and a bike mount. While the peripherals only truly make sense for Runtastic loyalists, they’re available today through Amazon — and they might seal the deal for athletes who want a harmonious blend of hardware and software.

Gordon Freeman, in your head. Well, that’s the plan, with Oculus now offering official beta support for a headset-based Half-Life 2. There’s a few known issues to iron out already, including an overly-dim UI and issues with the zoom. But even at this early stage, it appears to lack any gameplay deal-breakers we’ve seen elsewhere. As mentioned by Valve’s Joe Ludwig on the Oculus developer forums, however, the current build is a bit rougher around the edges compared to the Team Fortress 2 beta that launched earlier this year. Developers with the necessary Rift hardware can pick up the files on Steam or follow the developments on Oculus’ own forums — but no comments about headcrab hats and wearables, okay?

APX Labs mods Epson Moverio headset, adds camera, mic and motion sensors for improved AR

Epson’s 3D display glasses, the Moverio BT-100 have been floating around as a development platform for a couple years, and APX Labs is the latest to hack the headset. APX Labs is a software firm best known for creating Terminator Vision augmented reality tech for the US military, and it decided to use the BT-100 as a vehicle to develop and showcase a smart glasses platform it’s built to work for both business and consumer applications. In order to get the functionality it needed, APX grafted a 5 megapixel camera, mic and a full suite of motion sensors to provide nine-axis head tracking onto a Moverio headset.

All that gear is shoved into a 3D-printed module and attached to the BT-100 to turn it into a pair of smart glasses. In addition to the cameras and sensors, APX also hacked an Epson daughter board onto the Moverio’s controller to allow an HDMI video feed from a smartphone to be shown on the displays. This result? A system that understands where you are, what you’re seeing and hearing and a UI that allows users to glean information from the world around them using voice commands and head gestures. That should sound familiar to fans of Google Glass, but by using Epson’s binocular displays, these smart glasses can convey depth in a way Mountain View’s monocle cannot. (Not to mention that Glass doesn’t even do AR apps… yet). The hardware we got to see was a crude prototype built for demo purposes only, but the software platform shows promise and Epson’s got a version two Moverio headset in the works — so perhaps you can see a bit of the future of smart glasses in the video after the break.
