Europe will receive nearly infallible weather data thanks to this trio of school bus-sized spacecraft, and the EU saves £4.5 billion in weather-related damage annually. This is what the atmosphere will look like in HD. More »

Jamy Toaster Prints the Forecast on Your Breakfast Bread

Here’s a clever upgrade to the everyday toaster – a kitchen appliance that can burn the current weather forecast onto the face of your toast each morning. Designed by Nathan Brunstein, the Jamy is a conceptual design for a “smart toaster” that has a built-in weather application which could scorch the forecast into bread.

As an added bonus, the single-slice toaster looks kind of like a video game console. While it’s not clear exactly how the printing mechanism would work, it seems like a really clever idea – one that every hotel and bed & breakfast in the world should use when they serve up toast for breakfast. Also, it needs to support more than one slice at a time, or else I won’t be able to get my proper morning carb fix.

Storm Cloud Downspout Makes its Own Tiny Rainstorm

You don’t usually see much creativity in the design of rain gutters and downspouts. They all pretty much look the same to me (when the bums in the alley aren’t stealing them for scrap metal). But here’s a cool design that adds a touch of whimsy to the bottom of a downspout, taking the deluge of water that pours out and turning it into a little storm of its own.

I don’t really know much about it, other than that it’s awesome, was designed by Russian industrial designer Дмитрий Куляев, and probably isn’t going to be a product you can buy time soon – unless we can convince Art Lebedev studio to produce them. It seems like the type of thing that would be right up their alley, and they’re practically neighbors with the Russian designer anyhow. Here, I’ll even give them a Lebedev-esque name for it: Nimbostratus.

Mosoro releases its Bluetooth LE sensors and SDK for VIP appcessory developers

Since we last heard about Mosoro’s Lego-brick sized Bluetooth LE modules, they’ve changed their names, picked up another member and are now making their way to iOS app developers. The 3D-Motion’s got an accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer, while the Enviro measures temperature, humidity and barometric pressure. New to the team is Proximity, useful for triggering location-based apps and tracking motion for creating alerts. All three rechargeable Bluetooth low energy sensors have “shake-to-wake” support, an RGB “glow-cap” for notifications and a humble programmable button. They are expected to hit retail in fall 2012, but “VIP” app developers can grab them now, as well as the SDK which simplifies iOS Bluetooth integration. Got the ideas and inclination to become one of Mosoro’s “rock star app-developer partners?” Then go sign up on the website and see if you make the VIP grade.

Partly Cloudy iPhone App: The Infographic Weather Companion

Whenever I check the weather on my phone, I open up a couple of different apps, I always find it funny that none of them give exactly the same information. That being said, I don’t currently use an app like Partly Cloudy, which definitely looks like an interesting way to check the weather forecast.

Designed by Raureif, the Partly Cloudy app runs on iOS devices, and has a unique, compelling visual infographic based on the face of a clock. Time is shown on the outer ring of the display. The second ring represents the temperature for that time. As you turn the clock’s hand, the app will show you the weather for that hour. It will also display highs and lows, wind force, the amount of precipitation and the weather situation, and includes numeric indicators as well.

Japan’s Cockroach Forecasts Will Make You Feel Better About the Heat [Insects]

Here’s a neat/gross piece of trivia that should make waking up to a stiflingly hot forecast a little easier to deal with. In Japan, a website called Gokiten—aka Cockroach Weather—takes the current conditions into account to determine how likely it is you’ll run across a cockroach as you go about your day. More »

Weather Neue & Sun iPhone Apps: Minimal Designs, Easy Forecasts

These days, with the heat and the rain, it always makes sense to open up a weather app before you leave home to check out what the temperature will be like. These two new apps are elegant and minimal, easy to use and best of all free.

Instead of an over-cluttered display, Weather Neue focuses on the weather predictions on your current location. There are only a few settings and there’s a cool animation while the app figures out your location and displays the weather conditions as well as a forecast. It’s available for free through the app store or for Android phones through Google Play.

Sun is another weather app, which has an even simpler display. To get Sun, you just need to navigate to this page and then select “add to my home screen”. Once you’ve done that, the app will work just like any other. The app has a couple of themes and lets you check the weather as well as the forecast for four cities. Sun, however isn’t an iOS app, and instead it’s a web app that runs in Safari. Still, it looks pretty slick, and it is free.
