Dailymotion Majority Shareholder Confirms Talks With Microsoft On A Possible Deal

Dailymotion Majority Shareholder Confirms Talks With Microsoft On A Possible Deal

There are a lot of online video streaming sites but no one comes close to YouTube, which Google picked up for almost a billion dollars back in 2006. Since then, YouTube has grown to be the behemoth it is today, and even though Dailymotion and Vimeo are some of the better known competitors, YouTube is in a league of its own. Last year there were rumors floating about that Yahoo was interested in taking up a stake in Dailymotion, but apparently talks fell through. Last week it was rumored that Microsoft is mulling over the exact same possibility, and now French telco Orange’s CEO Stephane Richard has told The Wall Street Journal that talks with Microsoft are indeed a go, though not necessarily for a stake alone. Orange has a majority stake in the video streaming website.

Verizon Expects Netflix To Sign A Comcast-Like Deal With It As Well

Verizon Expects Netflix To Sign A Comcast Like Deal With It As Well

There has been a lot of debate recently over net neutrality rules placed by the FCC, particularly after a federal court ruling struck them down. Net neutrality warrants that service providers don’t discriminate between bandwidths, so ISPs and telcos can’t promote a service at the expense of regular bandwidth which may lead to an adverse effect on the user experience of their paying customers. Netflix has signed a deal with Comcast whereby the provider will no longer throttle its bandwidth, meaning that customers won’t have to put up with bad quality streams. Comcast has graciously accepted an undisclosed sum of money from Netflix for this, and Verizon believes that the streaming giant will sign a similar deal with it as well.

Facebook Look Back Videos Of Deceased Family Members Can Now Be Requested

Not so long ago Facebook turned 10 and in order to commemorate this milestone the company showed off its data mining prowess by making “Look Back” videos for its users. The video was basically an amalgamation of popular photos, stories and posts that gave users a glimpse into the past, particularly the kind of life they lived back then. The social network has announced that it will now create Look Back videos at the request of users who have lost a family member, provided the deceased person used to be on Facebook.

Lie Detector Tool Will Weed Out Rumors On Social Media

Lie Detector Tool Will Weed Out Rumors On Social MediaSocial media is a great place to get news and updates from around the world. It can be used to spread information about a missing child, a missing person, a missing dog, warning about accidents or traffic jams, but at the same time with great power comes great responsibility. Cheesy, I know, but there are times when one must decide if a particular piece of news is the truth or a rumor as irresponsible sharing can sometimes lead to the false dissemination of information. Well the good news is that soon you might not have to figure it out for yourself, thanks to a new tool that is being built that will reportedly be able to verify online rumors from social media sources.

This tool is being built by researchers at the University of Sheffield and according to Dr Kalina Bontcheva, the leader researcher, “Social networks also provide useful information. The problem is that it all happens so fast and we can’t quickly sort truth from lies. This makes it difficult to respond to rumours, for example, for the emergency services to quash a lie in order to keep a situation calm,” which is why this lie detector tool is being built. The tool will be able to analyze text and also examine social media accounts have been created simply with the purpose of spreading lies and rumors. Unfortunately this lie detector will not be made available anytime soon as the project will run for three years before a customized tool will be made available for more commercial use.

Publisher Plans On Printing The Entire Wikipedia

Publisher Plans On Printing The Entire WikipediaHow many of you guys have grown up with hard copies of encyclopedias, raise your hands! The drawback to physical copies is that not only will they eventually go out of date, but they can never be updated, which might explain why Wikipedia has managed to become as popular as it has today. Microsoft Interested In Purchasing A Stake In DailyMotion [Rumor]

Microsoft Interested In Purchasing A Stake In DailyMotion [Rumor]Back in 2006, Google announced that they had acquired YouTube for a little over a billion dollars. Given YouTube’s popularity, safe to say that Google has pretty much the monopoly when it comes to online video watching. Of course there are alternatives such as DailyMotion and Vimeo, and if the rumors are to be believed, it seems that Microsoft could be interested in purchasing some stake in DailyMotion. In fact it was back in 2013 that we had heard the rumors that Yahoo themselves had purchased a 75% stake in DailyMotion, so we have no wonder how much of a stake Microsoft will be able to get.

This is according to the folks at Reuters who then cited a report from Le Journal du Dimanche in France who revealed that Orange, DailyMotion’s owner, is in talks with Microsoft over a potential stake in the company. This is actually accurate to a certain degree because Orange’s CEO, Stephane Richard, did state that the company was close to signing a partnership in the US, although he did not state which company DailyMotion would be signing a deal with. However his suggestions that it was a “major player” in the digital economy, some have speculated that he could be talking about Microsoft. Given Google’s dominance with YouTube, it is not surprising to think that Microsoft would want a stake in the digital video market as well.

    Microsoft Launches Office Online

Microsoft Launches Office OnlineWhen Microsoft officially announced that they would rebrand SkyDrive to OneDrive, there was also talks that Microsoft could be rebranding other products as well, such as Office Web Apps to Office Online, which admittedly rolls off the tongue a little better. Just last week we had heard how the rebranding could be taking place soon and sure enough it has. Microsoft has since officially relaunched Office Web Apps to Office Online, and with it the productivity suites have also been rebranded, as per earlier rumors. What this means is that apps will now be known as Word Online, Excel Online, PowerPoint Online, and OneNote Online.

One of the criticisms of Office Web Apps is that it wasn’t always the easiest to look for when you wanted to use the app. Its placement was not as obvious and that is something Microsoft is hoping to change with Office Online. Microsoft has also promised that sharing and collaborating with other users with Office Online will be a lot easier than before. For those looking to start things off, Microsoft has also included hundreds of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint templates that will allow users to get off to a running start. Essentially this is Microsoft’s answer to Google Drive which allows for the creation of word documents and spreadsheets that can be edited simultaneously, but if you’re a fan of Microsoft’s products, perhaps you should give Office Online a go.
