Facebook introduces a more beautiful way to view photos on timeline

Fresh from its first earnings conference call last week, the social networking giant that is Facebook, has just announced a new feature to its Timeline. Today, users can now enjoy a new photo section that will make viewing photos more enjoyable. Essentially, when users will click Photos at the top of their Timeline, they will be greeted with a mosaic of pictures filling up the page in various sizes and shapes.

Users can also use the menu to find shots that they are tagged in, as well as pictures that they have shared and albums they’ve created. Additionally, Facebook is also introducing a new way to select favorite photos. Users will need to click on a star button that will show up once a picture is clicked to make it stand out. So, if you’re seeing this feature already on your Timeline, please feel free to tell us your thoughts about it. Cheers!

US Census Bureau posts its first API, allows smartphone apps for the stat-obsessed

US Census Bureau posts its first API, allows smartphone apps for the statobsessed

As much as the US Census Bureau has worked to embrace the digital space, its sea of data has been largely locked away from developers not keen on doing much of the heavy lifting. As of late last week, however, there’s now a public app programming interface (API) for quickly putting all of that knowledge to work. Both mobile and web apps can hook into either the complete 2010 census or the 2006-2010 American Community Survey, bringing in basic demographics as well as more complicated subjects such as commuting habits and education. The Bureau sees the API leading to not just a more informed public, but to smarter government as well — imagine a state government that knows the income levels by county through a custom smartphone app. Budding statistics hounds can request a key for API use right away, but if you’d rather just see what public access will mean in practice, you can check out an app gallery at the second source link below.

Bing search now lets you tag your friends

BingWhile search engines have made it extremely efficient for us to find what we need on the internet, there are times when we just can’t uncover what we need. Instead of having to sift through tons of irrelevant results and promoted pages that make their way to the top – sometimes a recommendation from a friend is all we need. Well, as of today, Bing has made it easier for us to ask our friends when we’re performing a search.

Bing announced today that Bing users can easily tag their Facebook friends when searching. All you have to do is use Bing’s social sidebar and select “Choose friends to notify”. You can then add up to five friends from Facebook to tag in the query, and with your permission Bing will post the search on your Facebook wall, tagging your friends in the process. This way, you and your will be notified and can pitch in to help you what you’re looking for. Who knows, some of you friends could even learn something new from each other. A pretty useful feature if you ask me. Just head over to Bing and start searching today. (more…)

Facebook’s mobile strategy is reportedly flawed, says report

The behemoth social network recently hosted its first earnings conference call yesterday with CEO Mark Zuckerberg casting the company’s direction. Zuckerberg said earlier that developing Facebook’s mobile platform is a top priority of the company. The CEO also highlighted its plans to increase revenue from mobile ads. Now, a new report sheds some light into Facebook’s mobile strategy. According to a research conducted by EyeTrackShop, an online eye tracking solutions company, Facebook’s ads on its mobile apps seems to perform quite poorly, particularly on the iPhone. EyeTrackShop reportedly analyzed the eye movements of individuals as they accessed Facebook on the web, the iPhone, and on the iPad.

They then examined the attention of the individuals to the ads displayed on the social network. The firm allegedly found out (as you can see in the photo above) that a fewer number of people are noticing the ads on Facebook’s iPhone app. Also, according to their research, they also found out that among the three platforms tested (web, iPad, and iPhone), iPhone ads were the least efficient for brand advertisers in terms of awareness and recall. EyeTrackShop could be wrong, but I would say that I don’t usually mind the ads on my Facebook account. How about you? Do you think that the research is a little biased?

Paul Chambers acquitted of charges in Twitter joke trial

Twitter joketrialBack in 2010, a man named Paul Chambers was arrested by anti-terror police for posting a bomb threat on Twitter. The tweet that convicted him? “Crap! Robin Hood Airport is closed. You’ve got a week and a bit to get your shit together, otherwise I’m blowing the airport sky high!!” – this was back in January 2010 when he joked about the airport not reopening in time for him to travel to Northern Ireland to visit a friend.

Demonoid brought down by a severe DDoS attack

Demonoid downIf you’ve been trying to access Demonoid (one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers around) yesterday, you might have noticed that the error page we’ve all seen too often. However, this time it looks like it’s pretty serious. The folks over at TorrentFreak got in touch with Demonoid’s tech admin and it turns out that the reason for yesterday’s outage has been due to a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack that caused a series of problems. It is going to take a while to fix due to the complexity of the problems.

In addition to the main DDoS attack, Demonoid’s server may also have been compromised by another attack, but not much is known about it yet. Demonoid’s server is only handled by one person right now so it’s not going to be up anytime soon. In the meantime you can just wait for it to come back up or turn to one of the many alternatives out there.

Facebook introduces the recommendations bar

Recommendation BarFacebook today announced on its developer blog the introduction of a new feature: the recommendation bar. It is a new social plug-in that helps people find articles based on what their friends like and share from that site. In case you were wondering how it works – if you visit a page that uses the plug-in, you’ll see a small box on the bottom right corner of the screen. The box will allow you to Like the page you’re on as well as pull up a list. On the list, you’ll get suggested links based on what your friends have shared on that site before. I.e. if you’re on Ubergizmo (we don’t have the plug-in btw), you’ll get a list of other Ubergizmo articles that your friends have liked/shared before. A pretty simple and nifty feature if I might say so myself, though I can’t say how effective it is yet. At the moment, sites such as Mashable, Wetpaint, and The Mirror are already using it. Give it a shot and let us know what you think.

Google now lets you search with your handwriting

If you’ve got a mobile device and want a new way to search Google without using your on-screen keyboard, you’re in luck. Google today announced a new feature for its mobile website: Handwrite. In case you’re in a place where it’s inconvenient to type (i.e. in a bumpy car ride) or you don’t want to speak aloud to voice search, Handwrite can solve all your problems. Instead of tapping out alphabets on the keyboard individually, users can now just write what they’re looking for by drawing on the screen of their tablet/smartphone.

This new feature is said to work on iOS 5+ devices, Android 2.3+ phones and Android 4.0+ tablets. I tried it on my Galaxy S2 with Ice Cream Sandwich using Chrome; and iPad 2 on iOS5′s Safari and I gotta say it works magically. While it’s not going to replace the touchscreen keyboard for me, I can see how it can come in handy at times. Just hit settings and enable Handwrite on the Google home page of your mobile browser. Check out the video demonstration above.
