Google’s Marissa Mayer to be the next CEO of Yahoo!

Marissa MayerYahoo! has been struggling to make a significant impact on the internet for the past few years, and besides its popular email service, Yahoo! Mail, it’s got nothing on its main competitors. Well, it looks like that might change in the future – according to a report from the New York Times, Yahoo! has got a new weapon in its arsenal: one of Google’s top executives (now-ex), Marissa Mayer. After working in Google for the past 13 years, she will now be taking over the reins at Yahoo! starting tomorrow.

Marissa Mayer was Google’s first female engineer, and has been crucial in the search engine giant’s success. Mayer was also responsible for Google’s white search homepage, Gmail, Google News, Google Images and was recently put in charge of Google Maps as well. This comes as a huge blow to Google, seeing how those services are some of the company’s most popular offerings. No word on what Mayer has in store for Yahoo!, but we should find out soon enough.

Some Facebook games no longer need permission to access your details

Facebook PermissionIt looks like playing games on Facebook is going to be a simpler process in the future. According to reports online, there are a number of games now from big publishers such as Zynga that have games which don’t request for permission to access your basic profile information. These apps have a “Play Now” button and also means that users have one screen less to click when playing such games (which is supposedly a big deterrent for most people). While apps still don’t have unrestricted access to sensitive information like your email address or date of birth, let’s hope this new feature is only available to larger, more reputable developers who can be held accountable for their actions.

At the moment, this new feature is only available to a small amount of Facebook users, but you can expect it to everyone else in the near future. Read more at Facebook’s Help Center.

Facebook CEO says adapting to mobile devices is the company’s biggest challenge

Being the CEO and founder of a billion-dollar company is a daunting task. Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is saying that his hardest job as of the moment is adapting to mobile devices. In an interview at the Allen & Co.’s conference in Sun Valley, Zuckerberg said that integrating Facebook’s features to mobile devices is hard because the user experience on mobile devices is much different than on desktops. Apparently the social networking giant is counting on generating revenues from advertising via its mobile service to maintain its dominance in the market.

According to Bloomberg, Facebook is reportedly developing location-based features that will allow marketers to target users with more relevant pitches. “Concerns about slowing growth have driven down Facebook’s shares 19 percent since they began trading in May. The stock fell less than 1 percent to $30.72 at the close today in New York,” Bloomberg writes. Zuckerberg mentioned that the latest Facebook IPO isn’t the biggest change in his life (at least for now), but added that getting married was an even bigger change.

Skype confirms messaging bug

Skype logoIf you’ve had a case of Skype sending messages from your account to random people on your contact list – fret not, your computer isn’t infected by some sort of virus. It’s just an issue that Skype has been having recently and you’re one of the unlucky few to be affected by the glitch. For those of you not in the know, a handful of people have reported on the Skype forums that a few of their instant messages were being sent to random people in their contact lists.

While most of the time this shouldn’t be a problem (a couple of lines taken out of context usually doesn’t say much, depending on what you use Skype to chat about) but it is still a serious breach of privacy. Embarrassing or even confidential details can be unintentionally sent to people who shouldn’t know about them. Skype has confirmed the glitch and is working on a fix for it which should roll out in the near future, in the form of an update.

Amazon rumored to be working on same-day delivery

AmazonIf there’s one disadvantage about shopping online it has to be the fact that you have to wait for what you want. Even though it’s so convenient to just buy what you want from the comfort of your own home, you usually have to spend a day or two (or sometimes even weeks) just waiting for the package to be delivered to your doorstep. And let’s not forget about the shenanigans that couriers pull off from time to time. However, it looks like Amazon might be coming up with a plan to change all that (for itself).

Facebook reportedly rolling out Timeline for pages on mobile devices

If you’ve been asking for Timeline on the Facebook pages of your mobile device, then today’s your lucky day. It seems that Facebook has started to deploy its Timeline functionality to pages on the mobile platform this week. One Australian fellow sent a screenshot of Timeline on his mobile device, as you can see above. And judging from the looks of it, the design now features a cover photo, detailed information in the “About” section, new icons on the page, and larger Like button, particularly on the iPhone app.

Also, as noted by Inside Facebook, some pages on the mobile web version have smaller Like buttons due to the Message button. It’s important to note that Timeline for personal profiles was already launched by Facebook a long time ago. Timeline for pages on mobile devices, on the other hand, has taken more time to be available. Facebook users will probably find this update nifty, since adding a cover photo and a detailed page description to profile pages will give users a better idea as to what that specific page is all about.

Google adds example sentences to Google Translate for more context

Dictionaries often include example sentences on them to make learning more fun and easy. Today, Google is deploying the same feature to its Google Translate service. Now, Google Translate users will have the option to view sample sentences by clicking the example sentence icon located at the left-hand text box of Google Translate. The feature will prove to be handy since sample sentences will provide more context to the words that we want to learn more about.

While it is nice to see how Google Translate has evolved through the years, it’s important to note that the product is far from being perfect. “Did you know that more than 5000 new words are created each year? At Google we’re always curious about new words from around the world, from all languages, and we think one of the best ways to understand and make sense of new words is by observing them in their natural habitat. Our latest feature does just that by providing you with example sentences taken from fresh new stories around the web,” Google said.

Yahoo now deploying additional security measures following data breach

Yahoo is putting all the blame on its Yahoo! Contributor Network for exposing more than 450,000 credentials on Wednesday this week. According to the Internet giant, its Yahoo! Contributor Network, formerly known as Associated Content, did not require any strong passwords, so it’s considerably easy for hackers to breach the website. Today, Yahoo is announcing that it has already deployed the much needed security measures and enhanced our underlying security controls to prevent further damage. Yahoo acquired Associated Content a few years ago. Hackers responsible for the deed have previously said that the data breach was intended to be a wake-up call for Yahoo. Check out Yahoo’s official statement after the break. (more…)

NVIDIA forums hacked

NVIDIA logoIf you’ve got an account on the NVIDIA forums, you probably noticed an announcement about the forums being hacked recently. NVIDIA took the forums offline last week to investigate the breach – it turns out that hackers managed to gain access to user’s usernames, email addresses, hashed passwords with random salt value, and public-facing “About Me” profile information. While most of the information was already available online anyway, users have been encouraged to change their passwords for accounts on other websites if they used the same password for their NVIDIA forum account.

Users are also warned not to provide any personal, financial or sensitive information in response to any email purporting to be sent by an NVIDIA employee or representative. All user passwords will be reset when the system comes back online, though it wasn’t mentioned when that was going to be.
