Google Chrome Beta now offers communication integration and improved Google Cloud Print

If you’ve tried out a couple of new experiments in the past using Google Chrome Beta, then you might as well check out these newly-released experiments today. The latest Chrome Beta release now allows beta testers to access their camera and microphone within the browser, without installing any plug-ins. Google touts the capability of its getUserMedia API for  WebRTC, which is a new real-time communications standard that allows high-quality video and audio communication on the web. With getUserMedia API, cool Google Chrome experiences such as Stinkdigital’s Magic Xylophone are made possible.

Magic Xylophone lets users play a mini xylophone on top of the browser by simply waving their hands in front of the camera. Today’s release also brings a newly improved printing experience for Google Cloud Print. “Now your printers in Google Cloud Print are integrated right into Chrome’s print dialog, so you can easily print to your Cloud Ready printer, Google Drive, Chrome on your mobile device, or one of over 1,800 FedEx Offices,” Google said. In case you aren’t familiar with Google Cloud Print, it’s actually a new technology that connects multiple printers to the web, allowing users to print from anywhere. You can download Google Chrome Beta here.

Facebook App Center goes globetrotting with 7 new countries, blankets all of the English-speaking world

Facebook App Center goes globetrotting with 7 new countries, blankets all of the Englishspeaking world

Facebook’s App Center is having its passport stamped quite a lot lately. Just days after the HTML5 app portal set foot in the UK, it’s making the leap to seven more countries. Brazil, France, Germany, Russia, Spain, Taiwan and Turkey will all get a crack at using web apps both on the desktop as well as in the Android and iOS native clients. The new group is coming onboard in the next few weeks. In the meantime, countries where English makes a frequent appearance — Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK and the US — now supply the App Center for every single user. To help speed along the virtual customs claims, Facebook is trotting out a translation tool to get developers on the right track. It shouldn’t be long before App Center is a mainstay of the entire Facebook world, even though we may end up cursing the company after hour three of a Jetpack Joyride marathon.

Facebook to launch job listings service

Facebook is looking to branch out and launch its own job board later this summer according to multiple sources. The sources also acknowledged that Facebook isn’t going to try and become a huge competitor in the job recruiting market (like Monster.com), but represents a threat to other social networking sites such as LinkedIn.

Three job-posting companies that will be included in the project are BranchOut, Jobvite, and Work4 Labs. Some have already begun to inform their clients of the new service, which could debut in early August. Facebook doesn’t plan to monetize the service initially, and sources are unsure whether or not Facebook plans to do so in the future.

Another detail we are unsure about is whether job postings would be integrated into your newsfeed or would be a separate portion of the site in general. Facebook previously announced a partnership with the U.S. Labor Department back in October to provide new job-hunting services. LinkedIn, which had a very successful IPO and has been dominating the job-recruiting industry, has seen its stock drop nearly 5.5%(-5.96) this morning today due to the report of Facebook’s own job board service.

Things could definitely get interesting between the two if Facebook does launch a successful professional connectivity service. We’ll keep you updated on the matter as more info becomes available. Would you use a job listing service from Facebook if made available? Let us know in the comments section below.

New Internet Explorer 9 advert released

The latest version of the Internet Explorer seems to have put the browser back in most users’ good books but it looks like having a good browser isn’t enough for Microsoft. The company has recently pushed out a new TV spot showing off the benefits of using Internet Explorer 9, mainly: a “more beautiful web.” It’s not very different from the previous IE9 ad – in fact it even reuses the same song and similar clips but I admit it does look pretty good. But whether the ad is good enough to change the minds of people watching it on TV – I guess we’ll find out in due time. In the meantime check it out for yourself above. Are you an IE9 user, and if you aren’t – does this advert make you want to check it out?

BitTorrent Torque alpha puts file seeds on the web, makes desktop apps look stale

BitTorrent Torque alpha puts file seeds on the web, makes desktop apps look stale

Almost without fail, BitTorrent downloads have had to spread through a dedicated client, whether it’s on the desktop or a router. Thankfully, BitTorrent Torque has just come in alpha form to liberate the peer download service from its software chains. All that’s needed now is a web browser that can parse a JavaScript app. Going the new route gives some freedom to enable sharing that hasn’t always been practical: among the tricks in the company’s Torque Labs are drag-and-drop sharing, conversion of torrents into traditional downloads and easing the burden on a server for video streaming. The alpha stage leaves Torque with awhile to go before it’s ready for the limelight, but experimenters can hit the source link to start tinkering with distributed file sharing today.

BitTorrent Torque introduced

BitTorrentWhile BitTorrent downloads are usually handled by client-side apps on your computer, it looks like they might not have to be anymore. The folks behind the original BitTorrent client and technology have come up with BitTorrent Torque: “a JavaScript interface to a custom torrent client that exposes all the power of BitTorrent to web developers.”  Basically in the future we’ll be able to make use of BitTorrent file transfer technology with only our web browsers. Pretty exciting stuff that takes file sharing to a new level.

At the moment BitTorrent Torque is far from complete, but you can expect heavy development on it to progress over the following months. I can’t wait to see what web developers can come up with using this technology.

Facebook to launch new mobile ads?

Facebook logoBad news for folks who hate ads on Facebook: it looks like the world’s most popular social network will be serving up some new ads in the near future. According to the Wall Street Journal, Facebook plans to launch “a new type of mobile advertising that will target ads based on the apps that consumers use, in an effort to boost mobile revenue and find a way to make money off the millions of websites that connect to the social network”. In case you’re wondering how or why Facebook is collecting data about the apps you use it’s got nothing to do with the apps on your phone/tablet – just the apps that rely on Facebook Connect (i.e. services like Soundcloud etc).

Twitter introduces search autocomplete and more

TwitterYesterday Twitter teased us about how its search and discovery were set to change forever – which we weren’t sure what they were talking about. Today, the answer has finally been revealed. According to a blog post on the official Twitter blog, they’ve made significant changes to the way Twitter.com works when it comes to search and discovery. The main improvement over the previous search is the introduction of search autocomplete. Instead of having to type complete words or sentences in the search field, the new autocomplete feature will help you with that once you enter the first few letters of your search term.

Other improvements include “people you follow” search results, related query suggestions, spelling corrections and more relevant search results. I haven’t seen the new features yet on the Twitter.com website yet so I’m assuming it’s going to be a staged rollout as usual. For those of you who already have the new features, do let us know if they work well. Related search suggestions, search autocomplete and spelling corrections will also make their way to the Android and iOS Twitter app.
