Google+ makes its way onto tablets

If you’re an active Google+ user and you were wishing that Google would create a Google+ app designed for tablets in mind, you’re in luck as Google has announced at Google I/O that Google+ for tablets has been revealed. Claiming to be the best version of Google+ they have ever designed, the app for tablets features more prominent text and pictures, which are apparently “playful” to look at, whatever that means, but we have to admit that it looks pretty good. The Google+ version for tablets will also come with the Hangout feature which the company claims is a more intimate experience, allowing multiple users to hold a video conference together and adding various effects to your friends’ video stream, i.e. adding moustaches, funny hats, etc. The good news is that Google has not forgotten about iOS users and has announced that Google+ for tablets will be making its way onto the iPad as well. The app will support the new iPad’s Retina display, which we can imagine will look pretty good. The app is available for Android today and will be arriving for the iPad in good time (we imagine it is pending iTunes App Store approval), so be sure to check it out at the Google Play store!

Travel website Orbitz claims Mac users spend more than PC users

Let’s face it, Apple’s brand of computers cost more than what you would pay for a Windows version with the same specs, but yet there are people out there who would rather own an Apple product. Perhaps its the ease of use of OS X, or maybe it’s the build quality, or maybe some just prefer the Apple brand, but regardless the reason, there is most certainly a market for Apple’s products. That being said, do Apple users spend more PC users?

While this is hardly a scientific conclusion, popular travel website Orbitz has compiled some information and according to their report to the Wall Street Journal, they have discovered that people who use Apple’s Mac computers tend to spend 30% more a night on hotels, so much so that the website has started to direct Mac users towards more pricier options compared to their Windows counterpart. In fact they have also discovered that Mac users are 40% more likely to book 4 or 5-star hotels compared to PC users, thus completely changing the sort of hotels and travel options that Orbitz displays to Mac users. Pretty interesting observation, but what do you guys think?

Cody is a virtual assistant that helps you achieve your fitness goals

Exercise can be considered by many to be quite a chore. After all not many people are thrilled by the idea of being sweaty and out of breath for a good hour, right? That being said, if you’re in need of some good old exercise, a virtual assistant by the name of Cody wants to help you do that. While Cody will not help you exercise, Cody will instead help motivate you and keep you on track. Developed by some of Microsoft’s former employees, Pejman Pour-Moezzi and Paul Javid, Cody has been described as, “a proactive Siri.  He collects data on your fitness activities, and provides encouragement, recommends activities, and organizes support.”

Capitalizing on the trend of checking-in, Cody will provide encouragement and recommendations to users, such as interesting articles, videos and suggestions when it comes to exercising or fitness. It also brings users together to achieve goals, such as training for a marathon and keeping track of each other’s progress which we guess will be quite motivating for those who are especially competitive. According to its website, Cody is still in development but you can leave your email to be notified when the service has gone live. So what do you guys think? Do you think Cody has the potential to help you achieve your fitness goals?

Google brings the Lego experience to Chrome browser

Lego toys are probably cemented in every kid’s memory and imagination. So whenever these kids grow up, the thought of “Lego Land” remains hidden in the subconscious mind. So when we got word that Google and Lego have teamed up to develop a platform that allows users to construct anything using Lego blocks, we were thrilled. It’s called Build, and yes, it’s a Chrome experiment.

“Over the last few months we’ve been working with LEGO Australia, thinking about what would happen if we brought bricks to the browser. Build is the result: our latest Chrome Experiment which lets you explore and build a new world of LEGO creations together online. With 8 trillion bricks, think of Build as the largest LEGO set you’ve ever seen,” Google said.

Build’s Lego bricks are reportedly made with WebGL. The team then mixed Google Maps to allow users to build the ideal “Lego Land” anywhere they desire to have it constructed. And since the folks over at Google Australia started it, it’s but fitting for Build to launch in Australia first. But don’t fret, the developers said that it will be launching in other countries soon. Cheers!

Google launches Google+1 recommendation across the web

Google is rolling out a new feature of Google+’s +1 button today in platform preview. Essentially, when users will hover over a +1 button, they will be able to view recommendations for other contents on their site. For instance, if users will head over to the Chrome Web Store and check out the +1 recommendations of Google’s Gmail app, they will be able to view recommended apps as well from their friends. Google pointed out that in order for the recommendations to stay relevant as much as possible, it will be referring to the pages on the same domain or subdomain.

The said feature is expected to go live to all users in the coming weeks. “We’re launching +1 recommendations! +1’ing something has always been a fun and lightweight way to engage with online content. It’s also a powerful discovery tool, making it easier for friends to find the best content by showing social annotations in search results and ads, and now we’re taking it to the next level,” Julia Farago, Engineering Manager for Google+ said. The feature is currently available via  the Google+ platform preview.

Designer comes up with Facebook-themed ice cream concept

Ever wished you could have a slice of Facebook, but their IPO proved too expensive for your liking? Well now you can, thanks to designer Tomislav Zvonarić who has come up with some rather novel renderings of what he’s calling, the FaceCream Bar. As you can see in the concept above, this delicious, icy treat has been designed after the Facebook logo and to be honest it actually looks pretty tasty! Of course we doubt that Facebook would ever create an ice cream bar of their own, but a little levity on a Tuesday morning to kick the day off couldn’t hurt, right? If you’d like to check out additional renderings, you can head over to the designer’s website for the rest of the pics. So what sort of flavors do you think this FaceCream Bar will offer?

Instaprints will take your Instagram photos and turns them into physical copies

We’re sure that there are a good many of you guys out there with decent photography skill who have captured photos and have uploaded them onto Instagram for all to see. However if you feel that maybe your photos deserve to make some money and be printed and hung on walls, now there is an option to do that. A new service dubbed Instaprints (not to be confused with Instaprint) has recently launched and it lets Instagram users turn their photos into canvas-and-acrylic prints, greeting cards and/or posters.

Given that pretty much anyone can create and upload an Instagram photo, how does the site separate the amateurs from the pros? Well according to its founder, Sean Broihier, he has coded the site in such a way that the top quality images are the ones that get top billing, while more amateur and frivolous photos will be pushed to the bottom. After all we’re not sure if there is a market for sepia-toned photos of guys doing keg stands, right? Instaprints is by no means the first of its kind, although they are trying to differentiate themselves from the competition by offering more high quality/professional images. If you’d like to browse for some photos or maybe upload and sell your own, head on over to their website for the details.

Friendthem sues Facebook over “Find Friends Nearby” feature

Facebook logoNot too long ago, Facebook launched its Find Friends Nearby feature which basically allowed Facebook users to look for friends who might be in the vicinity. However the feature was then pulled, leaving many to wonder why. Some have attributed this feature to being rather “stalker-ish”, but it might have something to do with mobile app developer Friendthem’s lawsuit against Facebook. According to the company’s CEO, he approached Facebook with the idea back in February, so we guess it wasn’t really a coincidence that Facebook decided to launch something similar several months down the line.

The CEO states that the idea was pitched to a Facebook executive who allegedly said, “I really like this idea”. According to their attorney who spoke with the folks at Mashable, “We will proceed with a lawsuit as soon as we confirm the information we have, but we don’t want to do things irresponsibly.” Could that be why the feature was pulled so quickly due to an impending lawsuit, or was it for other reasons? Either way we will refrain from too much speculating for now, so be sure to check back with us in the future as we will keep you updated on its progress.
