ShapeShifter Will Morph A Website’s Code To Deflect Malware Attacks

ShapeShifter Will Morph A Websites Code To Deflect Malware AttacksWouldn’t it be awesome if websites had the ability to morph and shift its code on a regular basis to prevent malware from attacking it? That definitely sounds like a pretty awesome idea which is currently being used by a company called Shape Security. The company’s product, called the ShapeShifter is basically a network security appliance that relies on real-time polymorphism that will dynamically change the code in a website’s user interface into random strings that will prevent malware from attacking it, essentially turning it into a moving target that is much harder to hit. While it seems like a lot is happening under the surface, the website’s UI is apparently not affected and will retain the functionality of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, whichever is being used at the moment.

The polymorphism will allow ShapeShifter to block attacks such as account takeovers, application distributed denial of service, and Man-in-the-Browser. Apparently this is how some malware attacks websites but according to Shape Security’s VP of Strategy, Shuman Ghosemajumder, a malware attack uses “the same fundamental concept of polymorphism, but the implementation is different.” Unfortunately Shape Security’s ShapeShifter solution does not come cheap and is currently available as a hardware appliance for now, although a cloud-based version is under development, and is priced upwards of a million dollars. This means that the average joe looking to protect their website will have to look elsewhere, but websites belonging to financial institutions, health care, or major e-commerce institutions will most likely be potential clients for Shape Security.

BBC Turns To Instagram Video To Deliver The Headlines

BBC Turns To Instagram Video To Deliver The HeadlinesInstagram video allows for recording of up to 15 seconds, meaning that uploading longer videos will not be feasible, and is probably more practical for quick and short videos as opposed to full length features. Interestingly enough it looks like the BBC has decided to turn to Instagram to spread its news and are currently experimenting with using Instagram video to deliver short news that basically highlights the day’s news, allowing users to hit up its website if they wish to learn more. This experiment will be conducted on a daily basis and will run for a month.

According to the BBC News Online’s chief, Steve Herrmann (via The Guardian), “We want the process to be organic, and we’re keen to trial new ideas on how we can use our video content to reach new audiences.” This is an interesting method of delivering news content and shows how traditional news outlets are starting to turn more to social media networks to distribute their news. So for those who surf Instagram on a regular basis you can head on over to the BBC’s Instagram page and start following them for your daily dose of news highlights! In the meantime what do you guys think of the BBC’s new experiment? Is this one of the ways you wouldn’t mind consuming your news

Worst Password Of 2013 Isn’t ‘Password’

Worst Password Of 2013 Isnt Password

It is unsurprising to see that even in this day and age, people secure their online accounts with very weak passwords, ones that can easily be guessed if someone with malicious intent really put their minds to work. Every year SplashData compiles various lists of hacked accounts so as to determine the worst passwords of the year. The worst password of 2013 is no longer “password,” it has been edged out of the top slot by “123456,” which goes to show that there are a lot of people out there who think that the first six numbers on the keyboard constitute the best of passwords.

In 2012, “password” was indeed the worst password of the entire year, this year it merely traded places with the one that sits on top right now. In third place comes a even longer succession of numbers, from one to eight. Interestingly several Adobe themed passwords have made it on the list as well, including “adobe123″ and “photoshop.” Both of them did not make the list in 2012. Passwords that have retained their positions year-over-year include “12345678″ and “shadow,” which is down in 18th place. If for some reason you have been using a password that can be found on this list, and by some miracle haven’t been hacked as yet, it would be a very wise decision to change your passwords as soon as possible.

Google Removes Two Chrome Extensions That Delivered Adware

Google Removes Two Chrome Extensions That Delivered AdwareChrome extensions can be useful, such as extensions to help block popup ads, remembering passwords, adding to RSS feeds, performing voice commands, and etc. Unfortunately it seems that a couple of extensions which started off as useful have decided to go rogue and actually start to replace links on browsers that takes users to ad-filled websites instead. Google has since removed two of these extensions such are Add to Feedly and Tweet This Page, so if you are using either or both of these extensions, you might want to remove them from Chrome ASAP. Google Search For “iTunes” Lists Malware Website For First Result

Google Search For iTunes Lists Malware Website For First ResultSome of you guys might be thinking that with Google policing its search engine and removing copyrighted material and unsafe material, you would think that those practices might apply to fake ads as well, right? Well that does not seem to be the case, according to a Whitenoise contributor who discovered that attempting to search for “iTunes” on Google will yield an ad space at the top of the page in which it will actually take users to a malware-ridden website, meaning that if you do not have the appropriate protection installed or are attempting to install iTunes on a new computer, what you will get is a face full of malware instead.

Thankfully for those who take the time and explore the search results page, the first non-ad link is a legit link to the iTunes page on Apple’s website. Now this isn’t really Google’s fault as it is not Google’s algorithm that causes the malware to be linked and listed, but rather it’s Google’s advertising format that puts ads at the top, For legitimate businesses this is of course great placement, but for the less tech savvy who just wants to download iTunes, this could prove to be pretty dangerous. Of course if you had installed a Chrome extension like AdBlock, you’ll never see the ad to begin with, so that’s something you can take into consideration. In any case for the sake of new computers out there, hopefully Google will be looking into this listing soon.

Download Tax Return Transcript From IRS Starting Today

Doing your taxes can be daunting to say the least, you want to make sure that everything’s copacetic so that the tax man doesn’t have a reason to come knocking. A new change announced today will make the process a little bit easier for Americans. A United States Department of the Treasury official has announced that you can now download tax return transcript from IRS, through its new service aptly called Get Transcript. This announcement was made at White House’s “Datapalooza,” where policy leaders and hackers get together to explore how open government data can aid the U.S. education system.

Through Get Transcript, taxpayers can view, print and download their tax return transcripts going back years. This new service makes getting transcripts very easy, previously taxpayers were required to fill out a questionnaire and wait for up to 10 business days just so the forms could come in the mail, physical mail that is. Some might say that its about time that Americans are finally able to access their own tax returns online, its 2014 after all, and I am sure not a lot of people will disagree with them. The IRS’s Get Transcript service is live now and can be accessed from this link.
