BitTorrent Chat Detailed, A Decentralized Messaging Service Thats Big On Privacy

Recap 2013 and the revelations about rampant electronic spying by the NSA certainly come to mind. Edward Snowden has released, and continues to release, a barrage of highly confidential documents that detail how the agency has been tapping into electronic communications. While major companies say that they’ll do more to protect user data, some simply don’t see it as enough of a guarantee for their privacy. So back in September, the folks at BitTorrent revealed that they are working on a messaging product so that “your messages stay yours: private, secure and free.” Today they shed some more light on the service called BitTorrent Chat.

Yahoo Mail Updated To Bring Tabs Back

Yahoo Mail Updated To Bring Tabs Back

Back in October Yahoo unveiled a major redesign of Yahoo Mail, its free email service that has over 100 million daily users. Tabs was a feature that was removed in the redesign, because according to the company, tabs confused the users who found them difficult to manage if multiple tabs were opened at any given point in time. So to make multitasking easier, Yahoo replaced them with a Recent view which makes jumping between emails, drafts and search results much more easy. However, Yahoo just published a blog post announcing that tabs have been brought back from the dead, and that they’re a bit smarter this time.

To turn on tabs, Yahoo Mail users need to go to View, Multitasking and click on Tabs. Emails being composed, calendar, contacts and emails being read will all be shown as individual tabs, double clicking on an email in preview pane will open it in a new tab. In the tabs menu, there’s a new option called Preview All which lets Yahoo Mail users see all of the tabs open in grid view which is reminiscent of Apple Exposé. Users now have the option to stick with Recent view if they never liked tabs in the first place, or they can get smarter tabs if they missed them when Yahoo took away tabs.

Facebook’s Secondary Stock Offering To Raise Nearly $4 Billion

Facebooks Secondary Stock Offering To Raise Nearly $4 Billion

It has been a little over an year since Facebook decided to go public. After its IPO last year, the company’s stock price dipped which took quite a while to recover. These things happen in the course of running a public company, and so do secondary stock offerings. Facebook has announced today that it is going to offer nearly 70 million shares, which would raise about $4 billion. Facebook will also be joining the Standard & Poor’s 500 index.

The company itself is going to offer 27,004,761 shares of Class A common stock whereas “certain selling stockholders” are going to offer the rest, which include co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg as well, with 41,350,000 shares. The actual price of these shares is going to be determined at the market’s close today, December 19th. Facebook will be added to S&P 500 at the close of trading tomorrow, getting on this index means that there’s now a measure to view its influence on the wider financial market. Facebook hasn’t provided any details about what its going to spend the roughly $4 billion it raises on, but it does say that the money may be used for “acquisitions of complementary business, technologies or assets.” Only recently it was rumored that Facebook was interested in acquiring Snapchat, bidding a phenomenal $3 billion for it. So even if Snapchat doesn’t sell, with that kind of money, Facebook will be in a position to pick up a number of other companies.

House Of Cards 4K Streaming Slated For 2014

House Of Cards 4K Streaming Slated For 2014

4K streaming is definitely the next frontier for the likes of Amazon and Netflix, but so far there’s no clear frontrunner in this race. Netflix might take the charge in 2014 though, its Chief Product Officer Neil Hunt told Stuff that Netflix is going to stream the second season of its insanely popular House of Cards original series in 4K next year. He didn’t mention specific manufacturers, but said that the option to stream in 4K will be offered through smart TV apps available on next generation 4K TVs.

Don’t get too excited if you have recently picked up a next generation gaming console from Microsoft or Sony. Hunt says that the consoles might “eventually” be capable of streaming content from Netflix in 4K, but it will take some time. Right now Netflix is talking about 4K streaming capability built into smart TVs. Hunt confirmed that Netflix is working with David Fincher on House of Cards season 2, “that’s all being shot and edited for 4K delivery.” Apart from its acclaimed drama series, it will also offer additional 4K content that will actually be a set of sample offerings. Hunt acknowledges that its going to take a while before there is ample 4K material available for streaming, but he believes that its important for the company to “get out front and begin to push it.”

    Vine Vanity URLs Launch Tomorrow

    Vine Vanity URLs Launch Tomorrow

Vanity URLs serve a much more greater purpose than just allowing you to pick out a really cool moniker for your profile. They make it easier for people to discover you, assuming that you have no qualms with that, and they are also much shorter than conventional URLs which means that sharing them is as easy as telling someone your name. We’re already accustomed to using vanity URLs on Twitter and Facebook, but starting tomorrow, Vine users will also be able to reserve their very own monikers, which will then be displayed as “http://vine.co/(username).

Registration for vanity URLs begin tomorrow at 9 am PT, at first Twitter, which owns Vine, will only allow those with verified Twitter accounts to reserve monikers. Users with verified accounts who don’t want a URL tied to the Twitter username can request a different URL, provided that it hasn’t already been registered by someone else. The average users will not be allowed to register until December 23rd. The process isn’t going to be too hard. Users will simply need to log into their accounts and follow the instructions to register their very own vanity URL. Once it is registered, it can’t be registered by someone else. Users aren’t compelled to do this though, its purely optional.

Twitter Reportedly Working On Letting Users Edit Their Tweets

Twitter Reportedly Working On Letting Users Edit Their TweetsEver published a tweet that you wish you had taken time to edit before putting it out there on the internet? Unfortunately as it stands, there is no way to edit a tweet, save for actually deleting the entire thing, but according to The Desk’s Matthew Keys, word has it that Twitter is currently working on an edit function that will allow users to edit their tweets “slightly”, and only once. Basically Twitter does not want the overall message of the tweet to be completely changed, and while a Twitter spokesperson declined to comment on the rumored feature, here’s how it is supposed to work.

After publishing a tweet, the edit button will appear for a brief period of time. The exact duration remains unknown, but presumably we won’t be able to edit tweets we made last week. From there theu user will be able to correct typos or any grammatical errors, or perhaps even edit a hashtag to use one that is trending at the moment, and other small changes, but like we said, the overall message will remain more or less the same. Just like Facebook, Twitter probably works on numerous projects that will help enhance or improve its service, but at the same time it does not mean it will be realized, but what do you guys think? Would you like an “edit” button for Twitter?

Kaspersky Labs Discover Bug In Safari That Stores IDs And Passwords In A Text File

Kaspersky Labs Discover Bug In Safari That Stores IDs And Passwords In A Text FileIf you’re a Safari user, you might want to consider changing your browser as it would appear that Safari actually keeps your IDs and passwords as a text file, meaning that anyone with the know-how will be able to access them relatively easily. This is according to the folks at Kaspersky Labs who discovered that this problem could stem from Safari’s retention of browser history as applied in the “Reopen all Windows From Last Session” feature, which basically allows users to resume their sessions from previously closed websites. While this feature has been designed for convenience, perhaps its implementation could have been better as the document stores the IDs and passwords as plain text albeit as a hidden file.

However like we said, anyone with the know-how will be able to discover it relatively quickly and easily. As it stands, Kaspersky claims that there isn’t any malware at the moment that is targeting the exploit, so for now Safari users are safe, although in the meantime you might want to do something about and change browsers until Apple can address the issue. Kaspersky states that this only affects older versions of Safari, such as Safari 6.0.5 running on Mac OS X 10.8.5. They also claim to have contacted Apple and let them know about the exploit, but we have not heard any official statement from Apple regarding the matter just yet, but we will keep our eyes and ears peeled and update you guys accordingly.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer Apologizes For Mail Outage

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer Apologizes For Mail Outage

Last week quite a lot of Yahoo Mail users started complaining about issues when trying to access the service. Soon after that, the company confirmed that one of its Mail servers was acting up, and that the issue had proved to be much harder to fix than anticipated. Yahoo assured users that it had teams working on it round the clock to bring everything back up. The Mail issues seem to have been taken care now, and with all that done and dusted, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer took to the company’s official blog to apologize for the prolonged outage.

She also detailed exactly what had happened. Mayer writes that there was a specific hardware outage in one of Yahoo’s storage systems that serves 1 percent of its users, but the “problem was a particularly rare one.” Since different users were affected in different ways, the resolution for affected accounts was nuanced. However during the week, Yahoo’s team worked “around the clock” to restore access as well as all messages to Mail inboxes. IMAP access was also improved for users who use clients such as Apple Mail or Outlook to access Yahoo Mail. Since then, Mayer says, access has been restored to “almost everyone” and the backlog of messages has been delivered. She also assures users that the company is going to work hard on improvements to prevent something like this from happening again. “We can, and we will, do better in the future,” concludes Mayer.

New Twitter Feature Could Show You Who Is Tweeting ‘Nearby’

New Twitter Feature Could Show You Who Is Tweeting Nearby

The folks over at Twitter are reportedly testing a new feature called “Nearby,” which as the name suggests would show you who is tweeting nearby. Apparently it wouldn’t matter if you follow those users or not, the additional Nearby timeline that will be added to the mobile apps will display all tweets being made close to your location. This feature seems like an effort to get more people to share their location on the microblogging network, which first allowed users to attach location information to their tweets back in 2010.

The Nearby feature would be quite useful for users who are looking for locationally relevant tweets, which can sometimes be quite hard to find using the “discover” tab and the microblogging network’s search feature. It would effectively fill that void, while another advantage would be that Twitter will be able to offer advertisers more precise targeting options. Pivotal Research group analyst Brian Wieser believes that it is likely that this new feature might prove to be “incrementally interesting to some advertisers.” Users location will likely not show up in the Nearby timeline if they have not opted in to attach location information with their tweets, when Twitter offered the option almost three years ago, it left it up to users to opt in if they wanted to and that hasn’t been changed to this day. When contacted by WSJ, a spokeswoman for the company declined to comment if Twitter has indeed been testing the feature. However, screenshots received by the publication from people who have used the feature point to the contrary.
