‘IT Expert’ Discovers Exploit, Posts On Mark Zuckerberg’s Wall After Facebook Doesn’t Pay Heed

IT Expert Discovers Exploit, Posts On Mark Zuckerbergs Wall After Facebook Doesnt Pay Heed

The way Facebook privacy works is that if your profile isn’t set to public, only those people can post on your wall who you have added in your friends list. a self-titled Palestinian security expert, Khalil Shreateh, says that he discovered an exploit in Facebook that would let anyone post on anyone’s wall. He says that the exploit was reported to Facebook through their bug reporting tool, but they didn’t pay any heed and said that his discovery was not a bug. Determined to raise awareness, Shreateh went ahead and posted on Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg‘s wall, who obviously did not have him on his friends list. Within minutes of posting, he was contacted by a security engineer.

He was asked for further details about this exploit, meanwhile his account was disabled possibly because a greater security risk might have been perceived. They’ve since fixed the exploit and enabled Shreateh’s account, but he’s not going to be paid for this disclosure. Like many companies, Facebook pays whitehat researchers for exploits and bugs that they report. The payout is at least $500. Shreateh is said to have violated Facebook’s terms of service, since he did use the exploit to post on someone’s wall without their consent. One could make the argument that had he not posted on Zuckerberg’s wall, the exploit may have been used to spread spam across the social network. Should Facebook decide to cut Shreateh some slack on this?

Teen Boasts On Twitter, Gets Vehicular Manslaughter Charge Upgraded To Murder

Teen Boasts On Twitter, Gets Vehicular Manslaughter Charge Upgraded To Murder

Its no secret that people tend to boast on the internet more than they would in real life. Sometimes though this impulse could lead to trouble. For example, if you call in sick at work and then post pictures of your fun-filled trip to the beach boasting how you duped your way out of work, you’re likely to get penalized if someone at the office seems them, or even fired. For 18 year old Cody Hall, the consequences of boasting online may result in 15 years to life in prison.

Hall was arrested for allegedly hitting two cyclists with his car, he was reportedly driving at 83 mph in a zone where the speed limit was 40 mph. The collision caused the death of 58 year old Diana Hersevoort and injury to her husband who survived the accident. Hall was charged with reckless driving and vehicular manslaughter. During their investigation, prosecutors scrutinized Hall’s Twitter feed and found him boasting many times about his habit of driving fast. In one tweet, he said that he had driven at 140 mph on an interstate highway. A tweet hours before the accident read “Drive fast live young.” This, coupled with his previous driving offences lead to prosecutors upping the charge from vehicular manslaughter to murder. Currently imprisoned, Hall may be sentenced 15 years to life plus an additional 3 years and eight moths for reckless driving if prosecutors are able to make the charges stick in court.

Too Much Facebook Causes Unhappiness, According To Study

Too Much Facebook Causes Unhappiness, According To StudyAccording to a recent study, it was found that 40% of Americans log into the web version of Facebook on a daily basis, and given that is a pretty significant amount, it’s safe to say that we log in because it’s fun, right? After all it’s nice to see what your friends are up to, and to receive the latest news and updates from around the world. However a recent study by social psychology Ethan Kloss and his team, it has been found that instead of being happy that we can log into Facebook, the more people log into Facebook, apparently the more unhappy they become!

It should be noted that this study is hardly an extensive one as only 82 young adults were observed, although it is an interesting conclusion nonetheless. According to Kloss, “On the surface, Facebook provides an invaluable resource for fulfilling the basic human need for social connection […] But rather than enhance well-being, we found that Facebook use predicts the opposite result – it undermines it.” What do you guys think? Are you finding that logging into Facebook is done more out of habit rather than because you truly enjoy it?  For those interested in reading the full report, click here for the details.

Yahoo Toolbar gets a redesign, reminding us to weep for toolbar users

Yahoo unveils redesigned toolbar, parties like it's 2003

Let’s get this straight. Yahoo can afford to kill a dozen products at once, but the Yahoo Toolbar — a relic from the days when only birds Twittered — just got a full makeover? Go figure. At least the browser add-on has received the same sort of tender loving care given to other recent Yahoo apps, including a fresh look, speed improvements and Chrome support. If you rely heavily on Yahoo services, or just have trouble letting go of the past, the toolbar update is available today.

Yahoo Announces New Update For Its Browser Toolbar

Yahoo Announces New Update For Its Browser Toolbar

Quite a lot of people wondered who Yahoo would function under its new CEO, the former Google executive Marissa Mayer. Since she took over, Yahoo has released a number of beautifully designed apps, shut down a number of its services and has made a few acquisitions as well. The biggest acquisition was Tumblr, which Yahoo acquired for $1.1 billion. Yahoo definitely seems to be focused on the future but today it brought back something from the past. The company has announced an update for its browser toolbar today, which lets users quickly access some of Yahoo’s most used services.

Much has changed from the early days when people had a lot of toolbars installed in Internet Explorer to enhance their browsing experience. Now other browsers such as Chrome, Safari and Firefox have jumped far ahead and most people don’t really use toolbars anymore. Nevertheless, its certainly a useful add-on for those people who heavily rely on Yahoo services. The toolbar offers quick access to search, email, local and international weather as well as financial news. It also lets you check in on social networks like Facebook and Tumblr. The toolbar has a new look and Yahoo says that they’ve made it to be quite fast. The toolbar is available for Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer from here.

The U.S. Hosts 60% Of The Worlds Internet Pornography

When it comes to the Internet, the U.S. has consistently been the laughing stock of the world considering we pretty much invented the Internet, to only be snickered at whenever mention of our nation’s average Internet speeds. Asian countries have been known to have some amazing Internet speeds at extremely reasonable prices, while the U.S. barely compares to their speeds and pay much more for our service. But there is one thing the Internet can thank us for, and it’s for being the largest adult content provider in the world. (more…)
