iOS 7 Design Makes Its Way To iCloud.com Beta Testers

iOS 7 Design Makes Its Way To iCloud.com Beta Testers

iOS 7 is scheduled to come out later this year, but in the meantime, Apple is preparing to roll out the new style that’s included in the next version of iOS to a number of its properties. We already heard Apple was preparing to make some changes to its AppleCare service to adopt some of the visuals included in iOS 7, and today we’re hearing the company has rolled out some changes to iCloud.com that makes it look more iOS 7-ish.

As of now, only the iCloud.com beta site for developers has been updated with iOS 7-inspired visuals as the icons for Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Notes, Reminders and Find My iPhone have been updated. Not only have the icons for these applications received the iOS 7 treatment, but the Web apps themselves have also been updated to reflect the new look of the upcoming software update.

Having its iCloud.com updated to reflect the changes Apple will make to iOS 7 is certainly a step in the right direction to make all of their properties reflect the upcoming change. If you happen to be an Apple customer who doesn’t like the upcoming look of iOS 7, it looks like you”ll be out of luck as pretty much everything looks like it’ll reflect those changes.

Google Search Personalized Results Flipped On

Google Search Personalized Results Flipped On

Google regularly keeps updating Search, which is one of its most widely used services. Since last year the company had been running a field trial of Gmail integration in Search, which would result in personalized search results being shown to users. Starting today the internet search giant is flipping on personalized results from Gmail, Google Calendar and Google+ in Google Search. Unless users opt-out, personalized results will now be shown by default to all those who are signed in to their Google account while conducting a web search through the company’s world famous search engine.

Apart from displaying travel documents and appointments, results will also include reservations, flight status, package deliveries as well as receipts from items purchased online. These results can easily be obtained by making a natural language query either by voice or through the keyboard. For example, to find out what your schedule is for the next day, simply search for “what’s my schedule tomorrow,” using any of the two mediums and a personalized card will display appointments saved in Google Calendar. Initially personalized search will only be available to English language users based in the U.S. through desktop, smartphones and tablets. No word as yet when this feature will be rolled out across the board.

Twitter Testing New “TV Trending” Box For Timelines

Twitter Testing New TV Trending Box For Timelines

Twitter is the undisputed king for real-time interactions, so it seems. It has become a source for breaking news, which sometimes hits Twitter even before being picked up by conventional news outlets. This is not just limited to news, for example, a season premier or season finale of a popular TV series can lead to so many conversations and interactions that it starts trending worldwide. It appears that Twitter and TV go hand in hand, and seeing how the microblogging network is apparently testing a new “TV Trending” box, this relationship seems to be getting a lot more serious.

Twitter is reportedly testing this box on a small scale, the person who told TechCrunch about it says that he can only see the “TV Trending” box right now in the iOS app and not in the desktop view. He says that the box shows up once the timeline is refreshed and flows down with timeline as the user scrolls down. The box displays tweets relevant to that particular TV program and will also display Twitter accounts related to it. Clicking on the box itself is said to reveal more information about that program. Twitter hasn’t officially released a statement regarding this test, so it can’t be said right now when the “TV Trending” box will be rolled out for all users. Those who find it intrusive will be able to make it disappear by clicking on the X in the top right hand corner.

Google Taking Heat Over Gmail Privacy Policy Statement

Google Taking Heat Over Gmail Privacy Policy StatementSince not many of us own private email servers sitting in our basements, we tend to turn to alternatives from providers such as Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, and etc., and while we don’t really think too much about it, technically these companies could always intercept and read our emails if they choose to but unfortunately that’s what made the Consumer Watchdog a little unhappy, especially with a statement Google made back on the 13th of July 2013 with regards to privacy concerns. According to Google, “a person has no legitimate expectation of privacy in information he voluntarily turns over to third parties.”

This was what riled up the Consumer Watchdog’s Privacy Project director, John M. Simpson, who in a statement said, “…when I send an email, I expect it to be delivered to the intended recipient with a Gmail account based on the email address; why would I expect its content will be intercepted by Google and read?” However according to Google who defends their privacy policy, “In practice, plaintiffs’ theory would prevent ECS providers from providing a host of normal services that Congress could not possibly have intended to criminalize as an illegal interception.”

Technically Google does make a point, although the way they worded it does make one a little concerned, but what do you guys think? Was this something you’ve always known and accepted, albeit begrudgingly, or did this come as a complete surprise?

Facebook Allegedly Testing An Exclusive App For Celebrities

Facebook Allegedly Testing An Exclusive App For Celebrities

Facebook has over 1 billion users from around the world, the social network is also used by high profile celebrities to update their fans about their work and what not. Recently Facebook started testing verified Pages with a small number of celebrities, this feature would enable users to interact with the genuine page of their favorite celebrities without getting lost in the web of fake Pages that are a dime a dozen on the world’s biggest social network. Facebook may now be working on an app exclusively for celebrities, AllThingsD reports, claiming that the app is currently being tested with a small group of celebrities. The app apparently allows them, or the people who handle their social media presence, see what is being said about them on Facebook and will even let them join the conversation through that exclusive app.

To get an idea of exactly how this app will work, let us consider a fictional scenario. A leading actor wins an Oscar which leads to conversations and commentary from fans as well as general Facebook users. The app would allow that particular actor to easily sift through those conversations and comments, even reply to them if they so desire. This should theoretically make it more easier for celebrities to interact with their fans on the go, providing them a detailed insight about what’s being said about them and a clear channel for them to easily interact. The report cites a Facebook spokesperson saying that they will reveal more information about this project once it begins to be rolled out.

TweetDeck for web and Chrome gets New Tweet panel with image previews, as-you-type suggestions

TweetDeck for web and Chrome gets New Tweet panel with image previews, autocompletion

TweetDeck just received a big upgrade for those who compose as many tweets as they read. Updated versions of TweetDeck’s web and Chrome apps now include a simple, dedicated New Tweet panel that shows image previews and streamlines posting to multiple accounts. It should also be much faster — the new client suggests usernames and hashtags as you type, speeds up replying to multiple tweets and automatically shortens web addresses. While only browser-based users will see the New Tweet pane today, Twitter promises corresponding updates to TweetDeck’s native Mac and Windows apps in the near future.

PirateBrowser Released By The Pirate Bay As Censor-Free Browser

PirateBrowser Released By The Pirate Bay As Censor Free Browser

Privacy and censorship are two very big concerns to most people when it comes to browsing the Internet. Not only do we want to keep our personal information from being released to anyone and everyone, but we also expect ISPs as well as web browsers to give us full access to the Internet, even those areas that may turn a “normal” person’s stomach. That’s why The Pirate Bay has released its PirateBrowser today that attempts to give its users a complete censor-free version of the Internet. (more…)

Textbooks now available through Google Play Books in US, iOS app updated to match

    Google Play Books textbooks

Google promised us that it would offer textbooks through Google Play Books this month, and it’s living up to its word. American students can now buy educational titles or rent them for six months, with prices frequently undercutting paper editions. Appropriately, Google has updated its Google Play Books app for iOS to support rentals like its Android and web counterparts. The launch is a painful reminder that the fall semester is just around the corner, but college-goers who want to be prepared can check out the source links.

Facebook Trending Topics Currently Being Tested On A Small Scale

Facebook Trending Topics Currently Being Tested On A Small Scale

If someone says “trending topics,” you’ll most likely think about Twitter. The micro-blogging network is the go-to destination to find out what the world is saying about a particular topic. Twitter made hashtags popular as well, and Facebook recently enabled them for its more than 1 billion users. There’s another similar feature that’s may find its way soon for everyone on the world’s biggest social network. Facebook has confirmed that it is currently testing trending topics on a small scale, only available to a select few users in the U.S. through their mobile website.

The company says that the feature is currently in “very early stages” of development, so it can’t be said for sure when trending topics will be enabled for all users. A banner will be displayed in the News Feed which will reveal whatever is creating the most buzz on Facebook, it may be personalities or different subject matters. Clicking on the banner will reveal what a user’s friends as well as the general public is saying about that particular topic. Twitter, which is one of the biggest sources for real-time news and updates, may soon see its rear-view mirror being filled up by Facebook. Recently Facebook announced Embedded Posts, allowing a select few publications to embed Facebook stories on their own websites and blogs.
