Microsoft Makes Changes To Policy After Hotmail Snooping Criticism

Microsoft Makes Changes To Policy After Hotmail Snooping Criticism

It was recently revealed in a court filing that Microsoft had accessed a blogger’s Hotmail account as part of an investigation against an employee suspected of having leaked confidential Microsoft property. The blogger received a tip from a former Microsoft employee Alex Kibkalo, who shared pre-release Windows 8 RT source code, among other confidential items. Microsoft found out about the leak and accessed the blogger’s Hotmail account to see if Kibkalo’s emails were really there. While this landed Kibkalo into hot soup, Microsoft came under severe criticism for accessing a user’s communications without their knowledge.

Facebook Stock Dips By 7% Following Oculus VR Acquisition AnnouncementWe guess by now everyone should have heard about how Facebook made a surprising acquisition of Oculus VR. From Facebook and Oculus VR’s point of view, this is actually a good thing because what this means is that virtual reality technology could become cheaper and also helps Facebook to expand into new markets.

Not everyone was enamored by Facebook’s acquisition, and quick look at the comments our readers have left us have indicated that there are more than a fair share of people out there who highly oppose the acquisition. Online Gaming Could Be Hit By Congressional Ban

Online Gaming Could Be Hit By Congressional Ban

Under the U.S. Wire Act, online gambling was considered illegal. Towards the end of 2011, a Justice Department ruling essentially neutered the online gambling provisions of the Wire Act. Since the ruling several states have legalized online gambling, New Jersey, Nevada and Delaware to be precise. Other states, including California, are considering this as well. Congress doesn’t seem to be too happy about it. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Representative Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) today introduced joint legislation that seeks to ban all forms of online gaming except horse racing and fantasy sports.

Finally Upload Songs To Google Play Music Through Browser

Finally Upload Songs To Google Play Music Through Browser

Google Play Music has been able to hold its ground despite the abundance of music services. However the existing Music Manager app for desktop left a lot to be desired, such as the ability to upload songs through a web browser. A new feature has been introduced in the “labs” section of Play Music. Through this users can upload music via a web browser by simply dragging and dropping tracks from onboard storage of their computers. If the track exists in Google’s massive music library it will automatically be added, if not, it will be uploaded.

Google Denies Allegations Of Gmail Snooping To Weed Out Leaker

Microsoft recently admitted that it went through a blogger’s Hotmail account to collect evidence of a leak by an employee. The proof led to the arrest of Alex Kibkalo, a former Microsoft employee who leaked Windows 8 files and Microsoft Activation Server Software Developer Kit to a French blogger. Microsoft was well within its rights to access the account, even though it may border on violation of privacy. The company’s privacy policy states that it can access content of communications “to protect the rights or property of Microsoft.” After this story broke, Google was accused of doing the same through Gmail. The company has formally denied allegations.

Twitter Ban Lifted By Turkish Courts

Twitter Ban Lifted By Turkish CourtsAbout a week ago, the Turkish government announced that they would be banning the use of Twitter in the country. Naturally this led to an outcry not just from Turkey’s citizens, but from those around the world as well who felt that the move was a little oppressive.

However thankfully not only did Twitter show Turkish users how to continue to tweet, but within Turkey itself, citizens were sharing tips and techniques on how to get around the ban, namely by using Google’s DNS or by installing VPNs. This led to a spike in VPN downloads in Turkey over the weekend that the social network was banned. (more…)

Gmail Experiment Shows Promotional Emails As Ads

Gmail Experiment Shows Promotional Emails As Ads

There was much debate over Google’s decision to display marketing and promotional emails in a standalone “Promotions” tab in Gmail. Incoming emails that are deemed to be offering promotions or deals are no longer shown along with the users’ personal emails. An experimental Gmail feature is now being tested which displays these emails as large ads with images.

Depart Of Justice Lands Conviction Against Android App Pirates

Depart Of Justice Lands Conviction Against Android App PiratesJust like normal software for computers, mobile apps can be pirated too, which is why the team Evad3rs received a lot of flak when they included the Taig Chinese store in their jailbreak which was found to play home to a lot of cracked and pirated apps. Unfortunately pirated mobile apps is an ongoing thing and we guess there are users out who find that $0.99 is still too dear of a price to pay.

That being said while we have heard of how courts have managed to land convictions for pirating movies and music, the same cannot be said for mobile apps, at least until recently where the Justice Department has managed to successfully land their first ever conviction against mobile app pirates. Judge Rules That IP Addresses Aren’t Conclusive Enough To Determine Pirate’s Identity

Judge Rules That IP Addresses Arent Conclusive Enough To Determine Pirates IdentityOne of the ways copyright holders are able to determine where copyright materials have been downloaded is by tracing the IP address, which in most cases usually reveals information about that person, like their name, phone number, home address, and so on.

For the most part that is how copyright holders, like record labels and movie studios, track down people who might have been pirating their property, such as through torrents. However in a recent ruling by a judge, it seems that he might have set a precedent in which IP addresses will start to lose their potential as a way of tracking down a pirate. (more…)

    Tumblr Adds Two Factor Authentication

Tumblr today joins other top internet companies in adopting the two factor authentication standard. Users can configure it through the Settings section. Other companies such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google already use two factor authentication to make their users’ accounts more secure.
