France Allegedly Opposed To YouTube Buying Dailymotion Controlling Share

France Allegedly Opposed To YouTube Buying Dailymotion Controlling Share

Last month it was reported that Yahoo was in talks to buy a controlling share in Dailymotion, making it the first expensive acquisition under current CEO Marissa Mayer. This popular video website is said to be worth around $300 million and Yahoo was rumored to be interested in purchasing a 75% share, with an option to completely acquire it in the future. It currently has a minority share in the website. Both Yahoo and Dailymotion had refrained from commenting on this deal, though according to a new report, the deal’s off because the French government is opposed to it.

France has a minority share in France Telecom-Orange which owns this website. Apparently the French Minister of Industrial Renewal is opposed to the idea of a U.S. technology giant taking up such a big share in Dailymotion. French Telecom is reportedly still looking for a partner based in America who will be very helpful in establishing a strong user base for Dailymotion in the country. Only a few days ago Yahoo unveiled its Saturday Night Live deal, which brings some of the best comedy routines and skits. The company has certainly been fighting the perception that hasn’t been too innovative lately. Its hard to believe that, particularly when Yahoo is working so hard to get itself back on track.

CERN celebrates 20 years of a free, open web by restoring world’s first website

CERN celebrates 20 years of a free, open web by restoring world's first website

The web as we know it was famously invented by Tim Berners-Lee while working at CERN, but it wasn’t until a few years later — 1993 to be precise — that it’d truly be set free. On April 30 of that year, Berners-Lee’s then employer would make the technology behind the WWW available license free, bundling a basic browser and some key chunks of code into the deal. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of this event CERN has recreated the first ever website, complete with its original URL. The preservation doesn’t stop at copying over some old files, either, with CERN also looking to preserve the first servers used, restoring as much as possible to its original state. Beyond a little geeky nostalgia, the project hopes to safeguard the web’s earliest days, before it became the ubiquitous phenomenon it is now, so that future generations can enjoy (and scoff) at the web’s origins. Best of all, no drawn-out field trip is required to enjoy the spectacle, you can see it just as nature intended by heading to the source.

Skype for Outlook.com preview launches in the UK, coming to the US soon

Skype for Outlookcom preview launches in the UK, coming to the US soon

Outlook.com’s 60 million-plus users will have another feature to take advantage of soon, as Skype is previewing built-in web access to its service. Currently available in the UK (headed to the US and Germany in “coming weeks,” — worldwide this summer) it lets users make calls directly from their inbox via a browser plugin available for Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox. Users with existing Skype accounts will also need to link their account to to the website which will allow their contacts to be merged, with the idea of having more choices of how to reach out to close contacts. Gmail’s added easy access to hangouts and even Facebook has integrated Skype-connected video into its messaging so we suppose it’s necessary for feature parity, with the added bonus of Skype’s large install base. There are two demo videos embedded after the break, or you can head to Skype’s blog for more details.

Syrian Electronic Army Hacks 11 Twitter Accounts Of The Guardian

Syrian Electronic Army Hacks 11 Twitter Accounts Of The Guardian

Recently a number of high profile Twitter accounts have been hacked. Several CBS accounts, 60 Minutes included, were hacked earlier this month. Last week the Syrian Electronic Army had its most high profile Twitter hack, it compromised the official account of Associated Press and sent out a bogus tweet claiming that the White House had been bombed. Now the same group has hacked 11 accounts of The Guardian over the weekend, same of which still remain suspended.

James Ball of The Guardian said that the modus operandi was similar to the attack on @AP, adding that they were “really very good.” The SEA uses phishing emails, which are very cleverly disguised. They have been using this very technique to launch their recent attacks. On the other hand, Twitter is rumored to be testing two factor authentication with several high profile Twitter account holders. Two factor authentication is certainly a lot safer when compared to simple passwords. It is rumored that the folks at Twitter are clamoring to get this security solution out the door as quickly as possible so as to thwart any impending attacks on its users, high profile or not.

Google Now Available On iPhone, iPad As Google Search Update

We caught a leak of an iOS version of Google Now last month which was immediately pulled from the Internet, which lead us to believe it would show up sooner or later. Considering that leak took place last month, it’s safe to say today’s release of Google Now wasn’t exactly surprising, but it certainly is extremely welcoming.

Google Now won’t be made available in its own dedicated application like Google’s YouTube and Google+ dedicated apps. Instead, it’ll be included in the Google Search app in an update that’s being released today. The update will make Google Now completely available to iPhone and iPad owners and will bring nearly all of Google’s information cards from Google Now’s Android version. (more…)

Google Fiber Gets Competition In Vermont As $35 A Month Gigabit Internet Launches

The Internet has been completely in love with Google Fiber ever since it was first announced a number of years ago as the promise of gigabit Internet is one we’re sure many of you are hoping to experience in your lifetime. But it looks like Google Fiber will finally be getting some competition in the gigabit Internet field as a Vermont telephone company has just announced they’ll be providing gigabit Internet, and for half the cost of Google Fiber.

Vermont Telephone Co. has started providing gigabit Internet speeds for just $35 a month to its rather small footprint of 17,500 homes. Since it launched, a total of 600 Vermont residents have subscribed to the gigabit Internet service, which VTel installed a completely new fiber optic network in order to provide this service to its customers. Google Ending Meebo Bar Services On June 6

Google Ending Meebo Bar Services On June 6

Google regularly performs the ole “out with the old, in with the new” on a number of its products and services, with the most recent service to get the axe, Google Reader, being one of the few products the Internet actually seems to care about. The company is announcing it will once again be ending one of its services, this time, the victim is Meebo.

Starting on June 6, Google will give its Meebo Bar publishing tool the axe in order for the company to focus on other projects like Google+ Sign-In and a number of plug-ins. Meebo is a JavaScript plug-in that allowed for websites to easily share their content on a number of different social networks as well as additional ways to share a website. Developers who are still using Meebo are encouraged to remove its soon-to-be inactive code for their websites as the Meebo Bar will cease to load starting June 6. Although, if you still use the Meebo Bar to this day, we’re hoping this will be the spark that will get you to adopt a new way of sharing your content to others.

US Ambassador Hopes Australians Will Stop Game Of Thrones Piracy

US Ambassador Hopes Australians Will Stop Game Of Thrones Piracy

Game of Thrones was crowned as the most illegally downloaded show in 2012. Earlier this month when its Season 3 premiere aired, it was downloaded over a million times in one day, breaking the previous record for the largest BitTorrent swarm ever. The premiere was illegally downloaded the most in Australia. Game of Thrones airs on HBO and the network’s programming president, Micheal Lombardo, doesn’t mind all this piracy. Actually, he thinks that the blatant Game of Thrones piracy is akin to a compliment. The American ambassador to Australia since 2009, Jeffrey Bleich, doesn’t have the same sentiments though.

In a Facebook post, he said that as the ambassador to Australia he found it especially troubling to see that “Australian fans were some of the worst offenders with among the highest piracy rates of Game of Thrones in the world.” He also says that Australians can no longer hide behind the time delay excuse, adding that new episodes are now available from legitimate sources within hours of them airing in the U.S. While his comments won’t exactly stop Australian fans from downloading Game of Thrones via torrents, it is interesting to see such a high level diplomat speaking out against online piracy in another country.

New Pinterest Design Update Brings Back Some Old Features

New Pinterest Design Update Brings Back Some Old Features

Last month Pinterest rolled out a new look for all of its users. This new look was first tested by a select group of pinners in January, while it was still under development. The focus was on new discovery features which were aimed at making it easier for pinners to discover things of interest that they didn’t previously know about. However the new look wasn’t appreciated by majority of users, which is why Pinterest has brought back many of the old features it had removed in the March redesign. These features include @ mentions and “via” links.

They’ve also improved notifications, which are Facebook-esque and are located in the upper right corner. Pinterest now also has predictive search functionality. This latest design update is being gradually rolled out for all Pinterest users, however if you’ve not gotten it yet, simply click on the “Get it now” button which sits at the top of the home feed. What do you think of this design update? Were you fairly satisfied with the March update or do you think that the user experience is substantially better after this update?
