China Largest Culprit As Cyberattacks Triple Last Year [Report]

According to Akamai’s State of the Internet report, cyberattacks tripled last year. Akamai is one of the largest distributed networks around the world, it reported that distributed denial of service attacks tripled in 2012 as compared to the previous year. The company’s customers went through 768 DDoS attacks in 2012, majority of the attacks were targeted towards commerce sector while roughly 20% were targeted towards Akamai’s enterprise customers. The company is only counting attacks that require human interaction for mitigation. Attacks that are automatically mitigated without requiring no or little human interaction have not been factored in the report.

41% of fourth quarter attack traffic originated from China, up 8% from the attack traffic of third quarter. China has been criticized much recently for cyberattacks originating from its soil. Only yesterday it was reported that U.S. is now going to take a firm stand against cyberattacks from China, this firm stand could entail visa restrictions for individuals involved in such attacks and even economic sanctions. Akamai’s report doesn’t have an explanation as to why attack traffic from China increased substantially in the final quarter of 2012. Attack traffic that originated from the U.S. decreased to 10% in the fourth quarter, as compared to 13% in the previous quarter.

Tumblr Mobile Apps Will Now Display Ads

Tumblr Mobile Apps Will Now Display Ads

Tumblr, originally founded in 2007, has really cemented its place online over the past couple of years. Back in December last year Tumblr became one of the top search terms on Google surpassing the keyword “blog,” which has always been one of the highest ranking terms on this search engine. Earlier this year it announced some pretty amazing numbers, the service now hosts over 100 million blogs and more than 44.6 billion posts. It has rapidly grown, considering that back in April 2012 it only had 50 million blogs.

Today Tumblr announced that it is adding advertisements to its mobile apps. Their first sponsored post in Tumblr Radar appeared almost an year ago. Tumblr’s fashion, entertainment and brand partners have created some amazing blogs. Now the service will bring over these posts to their mobile apps, after being “constantly amazed” by how well their partners’ creations fit in their dashboards. The execution of these ads is very simple and doesn’t affect user experience in any substantial way. Every now and then the ads will show up in a user’s mobile dashboard as he or she scrolls through it.

Comedy Centrals Five Day Comedy Festival Will Be Hosted On Twitter

According to a report published today by The New York Times, starting next week Comedy Central will kick off its five day comedy festival. The festival won’t be held at comedy clubs or other similar venues, this five day festival will be hosted almost entirely on Twitter. Comedians will make use of Twitter for posting jokes, they’ll be using the #ComedyFest hashtag for this purpose. Video snippets carrying the same hashtag will be uploaded to Vine. Twitter launched Vine back in January, snippets of up to six seconds can be uploaded to this service.

Famous comedians such as Carl Reiner, Amy Schumer, Mel Brooks and others will be taking part in this festival. Steve Agee is scheduled to host a ‘Vine dining’ party on Tuesday, he will be telling stories in six second videos. Comedy Central’s comedy festival kicks off with a panel discussion between Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner and Judd Apatow held in Los Angeles, California. The channel will also release a free, albeit add-supported, app next month. Titled CC: Stand-Up, the app will let users watch comedians performing various routines. It has been designed to look and feel like a cable channel that is devoted to stand-up comedy.

U.S. To Take Firm Stand Against Chinese Cyberattacks

U.S. To Take Firm Stand Against Chinese Cyberattacks

Time and again the U.S. has claimed that China has been launching a series of cyberattacks on agencies and companies based in the country. The administration has always denounced such attacks but now it is reportedly going to take a firm stand against them. A number of options are on the table, which the U.S. may pursue in order to strong-arm China in to ending cyberattacks from their homeland. Only last week Secretary of State John Kerry said that both the countries will form a working group on cybersecurity

These options include the prosecution of individuals that launch cyberattacks against the U.S. Surely we can’t expect China to hand over its citizens to the U.S. so that they can undergo trial, but an indictment in the country will seriously limit the countries an individual can travel to in order to not be released in U.S. custody. The administration may also place visa restrictions on people that are believed to be connected with these attacks, particularly those what work with China’s military. Chinese companies that are involved might have sanctions slapped on them. It is also reported that the country might also launch defensive or offensive countermeasures in the future, against such cyberattacks.

Android-Exclusive Google Now May Be Headed To The Web

Android Exclusive Google Now May Be Headed To The Web

Android users should be pretty familiar with Google Now and how much better the Android experience has become after its launch. But it looks like Google may be planning to expand its Google Now feature to beyond Android, according to some newly discovered code.

Some very interesting code within one of Google’s pages has hinted at the possibility of Google Now making its way to standard web search interfaces. The code suggests users to “get started with Google Now” as its use could provide “just the right information at just the right time.” Google Now for web would also allow users to change between their home and work locations in order to provide relevant information, like weather, traffic conditions and places of interest. 60 Minutes And Two Other CBS Twitter Accounts Hacked

60 Minutes And Two Other CBS Twitter Accounts Hacked

CBS confirmed that three of its Twitter accounts, including that of popular show 60 Minutes, were hacked. It is largely believed that the accounts were compromised by Syrian Electronic Army, though they haven’t been officially named as the perpetrators. Some of the tweets sent out from these accounts do point at Syrians, take for example this tweet posted on 60 Minutes account saying: The Syrian army’s fight is your fight. The Syrian army fights for all humanity. The Syrian Electronic Army has previously, reportedly, compromised Twitter accounts of NPR, Reuters and BBC.

The 60 Minutes account was back under CBS control soon after being compromised, but the hackers once again took over it and as of now this particular account has been suspended. Through its primary Twitter account CBS News had confirmed that the account of 48 Hours and of its local Denver affiliate were also compromised. The compromised accounts were mainly used for spreading propaganda, users should avoid clicking on links posted in these tweets as they may lead to sites containing malware. It is not known as of now when these accounts will be back online.

Fake Facebook Fashion Store Opens In Myanmar

Seeing shops open up in parts of Asia that borrow the name of popular U.S. manufacturers is nothing new as we’ve seen this kind of stuff pop up in the past, but today, we see a “Facebook Store” has been opened up in Myanmar.

The Facebook Fashion store is located in Yangon, which is Myanmar’s largest city, and, as you could see by its sign, is a wholesale / retailer. The shop’s sign, shopping bags and price tags all borrow from the popular social media sites’ colors, logo and color scheme. The Facebook Fashion’s shopping bag describes the store as it offering the “best quality with fair price.” Upon closer inspection of the clothing’s price tags, it looks as though all of the merchandise was made in Thailand. Google+ Comments Can Now Be Added To Blogger Based Websites

It looks like Google is wandering in to Facebook territory, the latter has a comments system that websites owners can add, now the internet search giant has brought over Google+ comments for Blogger based websites. It seems as if Google is just testing the waters, perhaps in the near future they might allow platforms other than Blogger or WordPress to integrate Google+ comments as well. This new comments feature can be activated from the Blogger Dashboard, its purely opt-in and won’t be enforced on all websites based on Blogger.

People commenting on the blog will have the option to comment publicly or privately for their various Google+ circles. While reading comments, users can choose to view all comments, just the top ones or only those comments made by people in their circles. Website owners will be able to engage more of their readers, if someone’s talking about their blog entries publicly on Google+ those comments and replies will also appear on the blog. Older comments on any blog will continue to be displayed in the new widget. Who’s going to try this on their website?
