Malware Infected Results In Search Five Times More Common From Bing Than Google

AV Test, an antivirus testing company from Germany, reports that Bing is five times more likely to show malware infected websites in search results than Google. The company evaluated searches over a number of search engines, Google and Bing included, for more than a year and a half. Google vs Bing evaluated almost 40 million websites, of which the latter showed five times as many websites containing malware. Google search brought up 272 malware infected websites out of the 10.9 million searches, whereas Bing displayed 1,285 infected websites after the same amount of searches.

These infected websites have malware that exploit existing security vulnerabilities, if a user has updated browsers and add-ons, the risk is significantly decreased. The malware exploits vulnerabilities in old add-ons, outdated PDF readers and old web browsers. This goes to show how important it is to keep everything up to date, be it browsers or add-ons. Even the smallest of updates can bring patches for any such vulnerability that can be easily exploited. It is a never ending battle against online malware, so its always better to strengthen up your defenses.

Greenland Kicks The Pirate Bay Out After Just Two Days

On April Fools day The Pirate Bay announced that it was going to move its servers to the U.S. and was going to be renamed The Freedom Bay. That was obviously a joke. Being the number 1 file sharing website in the world and an ironical victim of copyright infringement, The Pirate Bay’s .gl based address was blocked by Greenland in just under two days.

Tele-Post, a telecom company in Greenland that monitors .GL registrations, said that the domain name will be put to “illegal” uses. The company has stated on record that they have blocked two domains of The Pirate Bay. On the other hand, TPB shows no signs of slowing down. They say that they have a handful of domain names that can be used if the primary ones are blocked. They also intend to send servers in to low space using radio-controlled drones, making it next to impossible for ground police to conduct a raid. Most of The Pirate Bay’s current services are based in the cloud as of now. If they do end up setting up all servers in low space, you can still go and take a look at the first Pirate Bay server.

Facebook Timeline Designer Nicholas Felton Leaves The Company

Facebook Timeline Designer Nicholas Felton Leaves The Company

It was back in December of 2011 that Facebook started implementing the Timeline interface for all of its users. The designer of Timeline interface, Nicholas Felton, whose startup Daytum was acquired by Facebook in 2011, is now leaving the world’s most widely used social network. His departure takes place merely days after the social network launched Home, its brand new software offering for Android.

Towards the end of 2005 Nicholas thought that he should publish a report that would summarize whatever he did over the past year, this would include songs he’d listened to, airlines he flew on, photos he took and books that he read. The next year his report included beverages he consumed, types of meat that he had eaten and restaurants he had dined at. While unveiling Timeline, Chris Cox, the Product VP at Facebook, that he was inspired by Nicholas’s annual reports, he thought that they were art and that the company had to get him on board. Now Timeline is being used by over 1 billion of Facebook’s users, all because of one man who though he should chronicle every mundane detail of his life. Nicholas hasn’t said what project he will be taking up now, but nonetheless, more power to him!.

Rockmelt for Web Launched, Reinvents Navigating The Web

Rockmelt for Web launched earlier today. The company touts it as a completely new way to navigate the web. It is in invite only beta at the moment, though current Rockmelt iOS and desktop users will be the first ones to have access to the new Rockmelt for Web. A couple of months ago the iOS app was updated and it was able to bring a beautiful stream of content from the user’s favorite websites and people, while still allowing them to use it as a browser. Building on that, the company has brought the idea over to desktop, but in an entirely different way.

You see, Rockmelt for Web is not actually a new browser. Rockmelt.com is now a visual stream which will pull content from the user’s favorite websites and people. The stream is highly personalized with great social integration, users can recommend content and their friends can react and comment on it. They can also @mention their friends, pivot on people and hashtags, explore categories and new sources. The experience is highly interactive, the company says they’ve pushed the boundaries of HTML5 and Javascript to deliver a very interactive app-quality experience.

Google introduces Inactive Account Manager for when you’re deceased

Many of us probably wonder what will happen to our online accounts and information once we pass away one day. Then again, since we’ll be dead, we won’t really care, right? In any case, Google has launched what they’re calling the Inactive Account Manager, which allows you to control what happens to your Google accounts after you pass away.

Screen Shot 2013-04-11 at 12.53.25 PM

Inactive Account Manager comes with several options to choose from as far as what happens to your Google account data and information. You can choose to have an alert sent to a mobile phone after a certain amount of time of inactivity has passed, and you can also add up to 10 “trusted contacts,” who will be given your account credentials should your account become inactive for a long period of time.

Or if you’d rather not give your Google account information to anyone, you can simply have your entire Google account deleted after a specified amount of time of inactivity has passed. Deleting your account will result in all Google data being wiped, including Blogger, Contacts and Circles, Drive, Gmail, Google+ Profiles, Pages and Streams, Picasa Web Albums, Google Voice, and YouTube.

This makes for an easy way for your loved ones to handle your digital life after you’ve passed away. Of course, they could easily log on to your accounts by looking up your saved passwords in the web browser settings, but not everyone saves their passwords, and many users put passwords on the computers themselves.

eBay Will Start Selling Your Browsing Habits To Third Party Companies

eBay Will Start Selling Your Browsing Habits To Third Party CompaniesIt is well-known that Google caters ads on its website based on what you search for. For example searching for cameras will display ads that are related to photography, such as camera retailer websites, photography courses and etc. It now seems that online auction website eBay is planning to do something similar as well. The company has announced (via AdWeek) that they are planning to share the browsing habits of their customers with third-party advertisers, ultimately following in the footsteps of other companies such as Google, Amazon and Facebook.

Instead of merely selling all of the data to marketing companies, eBay will instead choose to sell targeted advertisements to companies who are interested in reaching a specific audience, although we’re not sure what that could mean. Perhaps the way you bid on items and your preference of new versus secondhand could be taken into account, as well as the amount of money you’d be willing to pay for an item. Either way what do you guys think of this move by eBay? Do you think it could enrich your eBay experience?
