Facebook Now Lets British Users Message Celebrities For A Charge

We reported back in January that Facebook was testing out a new messaging system which would allow its users to send messages directly to another user’s inbox, one who is not in their connections, for $1, $5 or $15. The price was exorbitantly high for some celebrities. Those wishing to send a message directly to Facebook supremo Mark Zuckerberg’s inbox had to part with $100 per single message. At the time Facebook said that they were testing various price points so as to figure out what works best to filter out spam. As of now the $100 fee option has been pulled.

Chrome 27 beta wrings out more speed, streamlines HTML5 input

Google Chrome logo

It’s like clockwork, really. Chrome 26 has barely hit the stable track, and Google is already posting a Chrome 27 beta for desktops and Android devices to show what’s next. Apparently, that future centers mostly on raw efficiency: Google has eked out an average 5 percent speed boost through a more aggressive resource scheduler. It also has a simpler interface for date and time forms on HTML5 pages. Most of the other upgrades coddle developers, such as the introduction of live audio input for the Web Audio API and an offline storage API for Chrome Web Store apps. There’s no mention of Blink, so those who were expecting rapid adoption of the web engine beyond Chromium will be disappointed — even so, it’s good enough that we could see internet Guinea pigs giving the release a try.

Mentions Added To LinkedIn For Striking Up Conversations

Mentions Added To LinkedIn For Striking Up Conversations

The mentions feature has been made popular by Twitter. It has become one of the most widely used ways for striking up conversations online. LinkedIn, a network focused towards professionals, brings mentions for its users in a bid to make it easier for them to start conversations. Dubbing it a new way for users to engage with their network, LinkedIn says that mentions make it easier for users to share knowledge with each other and ultimately become better at what they do. They now have the ability to mention their connections and companies in conversations on the network.

It is pretty straight forward to use mentions on LinkedIn. Simply type the name of a company or connection that you want to mention in your status or in a comment on the Homepage, select the relevant connection from the list that drops down and proceed to share. Those who have been mentioned in the update will receive a notification about the mention. It is also possible to mention other LinkedIn members that are in conversation in the comments section of posts on the LinkedIn Homepage. Users will be able to respond in real-time when someone begins a conversation with them. Today LinkedIn starts rolling out mentions for English speaking members, promising that it will be rolled out to users all across the globe soon.

Qualcomm bringing WiFi improvements to MLB stadiums

The 2013 MLB season is officially in full swing (pun intended), and thousands upon thousands of spectators will flock to MLB stadiums all around the country every day for the next few months. However, these spectators will be wielding smartphones, so providing a great WiFi experience is a priority for stadiums across the country, and Qualcomm is partnering up with the MLB to make such improvements.

qualcomm

Qualcomm announced that it’ll be working with the MLB over the next two years to implement WiFi improvements to each of the 30 MLB stadiums to assess the level of WiFi coverage. The company said that select stadium reviews are underway as we speak, with the rest of fleet getting improvements over the next two years.

Qualcomm noted that WiFi traffic has been on the rise at MLB ballparks, and the company will not only figure out ways to improve WiFi coverage in stadiums, but also figure out new ways to deliver helpful and interesting content to spectators during the game. Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed, and it’s not said how much upgrades will cost.

Qualcomm will also be working with carriers to improve 3G and 4G coverage in and around MLB stadiums. Frankly, improved wireless coverage is becoming more of a must at high-traffic areas like sports stadiums. With the growing amount of connected smartphones making their way into the hands of sports fans, stadiums will need to compensate by offering better WiFi coverage during the games.

Anonymous Hacks North Korean Social Networks As Part Of ‘Operation Free Korea’

Anonymous Hacks North Korean Social Networks As Part Of Operation Free Korea
We’re not sure if you’ve been keeping tabs on world news lately outside of reading about the latest Internet trends, but there’s some serious stuff going on in North Korea these days. Nearly everyone is watching to see what Kim Jong-un will do, while also preparing for the worst-case scenario at the same time. But infamous hacker group Anonymous has taken the initiative to launch a cyber attack at North Korea’s social network accounts.

Not only has Anonymous claim to be responsible for the hacking of North Korea’s Twitter and Flickr account, they’ve also forced North Korean news agency Uriminzokkiri to go offline and claim they have accessed 15,000 usernames and passwords from a university database. Anonymous has used the hacked accounts to relay their “Operation Free Korea” message to call for Kim Jong-un’s resignation as the leader of North Korea to be replaced with a democratic government, as well as to give the people of North Korea uncensored Internet access.

Vdio Is Rdio’s New Video Streaming Service

Vdio Is Rdios New Video Streaming ServiceThe other day we reported that according to a rumor, Spotify was interested in launching a video streaming service of their own, possibly to help give themselves an edge over the competition, as well as provide an additional channel of revenue. While we have yet to see Spotify launch such a feature, it seems that their rival, Rdio, has managed to beat them to the punch with the launch of Vdio.

Launching for Rdio Unlimited subscribers in the US, Vdio is expected to be similar to Rdio in the sense that instead of discovering new music, Vdio will allow users to discover new movies. According to the company: (more…)

Chrome 26 for Android gets stable release with autofill and password syncing

Chrome 26 syncing

Perpetually forgetful Android users no longer have to adopt a Chrome beta to coordinate their lives. Just a month after the test version of Chrome 26 arrived with autofill and password syncing, its stable version has appeared with the same option to remember form and login details between supporting desktop and mobile Chrome builds. There’s no talk of the SPDY-based proxy, however: aside from tune-ups, the syncing is the main highlight. That’s still enough for us to justify swinging by Google Play for the update.

Google forks WebKit with Blink, a new web engine for Chromium and Chrome (update)

Google forks WebKit with Blink, a new web engine for Chromium and Chrome (update)

You could call WebKit the glue that binds the modern web: the rendering engine powers Apple’s Safari, Google’s Chrome, and many mobile browsers past and present. Things are about to unstick a little. Google believes that Chromium’s multi-process approach has added too much complexity for both the browser and WebKit itself, so it’s creating a separate, simpler fork named Blink. Although the new engine will be much the same as WebKit at the start, it’s expected to differ over time as Google strips out unnecessary code and tweaks the underlying platform. We’d also expect it to spread, as the company has confirmed to us that both Chrome and Chrome OS will be using Blink in the future. We’re safely distant from the Bad Old Days of wildly incompatible web engines, but the shift may prove a mixed blessing — it could lead to more advancements on the web, but it also gives developers that much more code to support.

Update: The Next Web has confirmed that Opera, which recently ditched its Presto engine for Webkit, will indeed be using Blink as it’s already hitching its proverbial wagon to Chromium.

Google Launches Blink And Ends WebKit Affiliation With Apple

Google Launches Blink And Ends WebKit Affiliation With Apple

Google announced today that it is ending its affiliation with Apple over WebKit, which is an open source project that both Google and its arch nemesis have jointly collaborated upon for quite some time. While praising it for its flexibility, performance and thoughtful design, Google says that since Chromium uses a different multi-process architecture than other WebKit based browsers, supporting multiple architectures has slowed down the pace of innovation. So Google introduces Blink, its very own open source rendering engine based on WebKit.

Introducing a new rendering engine can have implications for the web, Google accepts that, but it believes that having multiple rendering engines, like having multiple web browsers, will foster innovation and improve the entire web ecosystem. The changes will be long term, as of now Blink doesn’t bring any major changes for web developers, most of the initial work will focus on simplification of the code base and internal architectural improvements. Google anticipates to remove 7 build systems and get rid of over 7,000 files from the get go. Such a healthy codebase will mean better stability and less bugs in the future.

Technical Issues Causing iTunes Store Links To Not Appear In Google Search

It appears that iTunes Store links are missing from Google Search results and other links are being ranked higher than usual. This has been spotted by many users and the hype has turned the issue in to a conspiracy theory of sorts, as some have the idea that Google is purposefully excluding them from search. Google has now officially commented to this problem, saying that iTunes Store links are not being fetched due to technical issues.

Google says that it has been having issues fetching pages from iTunes web servers, this is resulting in links disappearing from search. It further states that they’re working with the team in order to ensure that users find what they’re searching for. Google drops the rank of pages that have duplicate content, it is possible that iTunes Store links are being dropped due to this reason. Rankings for various iTunes pages might have been split, causing the links to not rank on the first page, where a search user would normally expect to find them. Hopefully Google will be able to roll out a fix soon.
