Google+ Now Supports Full Resolution Photo Uploads

Google+ Now Supports Full Resolution Photo Uploads

Google has been working quite hard on Google+, though it has not yet been able to reach the level Facebook or even Twitter has, their social platform does have a considerable user base. It is quite evident that the company wants it to play a pivotal role among all of its services, so naturally Google rolls out a few tweaks every couple of months to enhance and upgrade the user experience. The latest tweak brings full size photo uploads to Google+. Previously, users were not able to post pictures that were wider than 2048 pixels, that limited has now been removed.

A checkbox can be found in the settings menu from where this feature can be enabled, this has to be done otherwise the 2048 pixel limit would still be in place. Do keep in mind that photos that are over this limit will take up space from the 5GB of free storage that Google+ offers to all users. Photo storage below the 2048 pixel limit will not count towards the 5GB free storage. How often do you use Google+ and do you see yourself making use of this new allowance?

According to Microsoft, the scam is circulating in hopes people will fall for the promise of free Microsoft points to help celebrate the company’s 38th anniversary this week. Microsoft commented on the scam through the company’s official Facebook page. “Please do not respond to [the scam],” it said in the post. “There won’t be free Xbox points for the occasion, but we hope you’ll celebrate with us nonetheless!” (more…)

Game Of Thrones Season 3 Premiere Illegal Downloads Peak Over A Million

Game of Thrones has a unique honor to its name. It became the most illegally downloaded TV show of 2012. According to latest numbers, it is not giving up that throne any time soon. Last night HBO aired the Game of Thrones Season 3 premier and in merely a day it has been downloaded over a million times. There have never been so many people sharing a file at the same time, with 160,000 simultaneous peers, its a new record. It broke the record for the largest BitTorrent swarm ever. Previously this record was held by the season premier of Heroes with 144,663 peers.

One of the main reasons behind this rampant piracy is the delay in airing for viewers outside the U.S. HBO has been working to plug these delays but adamant turn to piracy as they don’t want to miss out on the latest and greatest episodes. The data shows that Australia has the highest piracy rate, with a population of over 22 million. London was the city with the highest piracy rate followed by Paris and Sydney. The U.S. comes in at the top. We’ve got to ask, how did you watch the premier last night?!

Chinese Man Calls Police On Himself To Help Fight Internet Addiction

Chinese Man Calls Police On Himself To Help Fight Internet Addiction

We’re sure the man who has been spending the last six years at an Internet cafe can be considered a person who is addicted to not only the Internet, but games itself as he spends the majority of his waking moments at the cafe. But until he admits he has a problem, he’ll just continue living his life at the Internet cafe. That is, unless he one day becomes so addicted he calls the police on himself.

A 22-year-old Chinese man called the cops on himself after a two-day Internet cafe binge asking authorities to keep him away from the Internet. The man took his Internet addiction extremely serious as he sold his laptop and smartphone and even took a job with long hours to help him fight his own addiction. Ultimately, he couldn’t fight the urge to visit the Internet as he found himself in an Internet cafe in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province where he spend two whole days there. Realizing he had lost his battle with Internet addiction, he proceeded to call the police, saying “Lock me up for a few months, I can’t control myself.” (more…)

The Pirate Bay Becomes #1 File-Sharing Website

The Pirate Bay Becomes #1 File Sharing Website

The Pirate Bay moving its servers to the U.S. to become “The Freedom Bay“ is obviously the popular torrent-tracking website’s April Fools’ Day joke, but its popularity over the years has been slowly rising with it reaching the top of the file-sharing website ranks as they have just become the #1 site for our file-sharing needs.

The news comes from some analytical work done by Torrent Freak to reveal The Pirate Bay has taken the top spot to become the world’s most-used file-sharing website. The rise in The Pirate Bay’s popularity is due to its gradual increase in the number of visitors, but the real reason might have to do with the drop in popularity of one-click hosting websites once Megaupload was shut down. YouTube Co-Founder Announces MixBit Collaborative Video Platform

YouTube Co Founder Announces MixBit Collaborative Video Platform

One of YouTube’s co-founders teased he was close to launching a new video service, but was about a month away from its actual launch. What better day to launch an actual product, or in this place a video platform, than on the day where the Internet is running rampant with April Fools’ Day stories? We could think of 364 better days, but regardless of what we think, Chad Hurley decided today was the day to launch his new video platform, MixBit.

The announcement came as sort of an April Fools’ Joke as Hurley announced on his Twitter profile “Since YouTube is ending, we’re launching a new video site.” Of course, YouTube is far from closing its doors, but MixBit is actually a new video platform, although information regarding what it actually does and how it’ll attract the attention of online video watchers is to be seen. Instead of MixBit being a direct competitor to YouTube, the site would provide its users the “flexibility for people to work together and create content.” If that means more cat videos an anime music videos, then we’re all for it.

Boston Police Reportedly Posing Undercover On Facebook To Scout Out Illegal Punk Rock Shows

Boston Police Reportedly Posing Undercover On Facebook To Scout Out Illegal Punk Rock ShowsOne of the ways for bands and musicians to interact with fans and to let them know where their next concert is, or when their next album is coming out, would be through social media sites such as Facebook or Twitter. However it also seems that that is where the Boston police are hanging out in order to catch punk rock bands who might be performing illegally at house parties. According to the Slate, it seems that the Boston police are posing undercover on social media websites. This was suspected when St. Louis band, Spelling Bee, posted a screenshot (above) of emails from a user called Joe Sly that they believed was an undercover police prior to a sting operation before their Boston show.

CNET has emailed the Boston Police Department to try and ascertain if that was indeed one of their officers undercover. As it stands, police relying on social media to keep an eye on crime is nothing new and there have tons of examples where criminals have been caught due to their postings on social media websites, although we guess this might be a wake-up call for bands and musicians who think that just because they aren’t posting about stealing or doing drugs that the cops aren’t keeping an eye on them!

Russian Government Begins To Selectively Censor The Internet

Russian Government Begins To Selectively Censor The InternetWe’ve heard of countries such as China who are heavily censoring the internet, and it seems that Russia has joined in as well. According to a report by The New York Times, the Russian government has recently begun enforcing a new law which was introduced in November 2012 in which they will “block Internet content that it deems illegal or harmful to children”. Now before you get up all riled up about another country censoring the internet, it seems that Russia’s way around it does make sense and isn’t as extreme where an entire country is denied access to a certain website.

For example in Russia’s case, what they are doing is that they are asking companies to selectively block certain postings, so that “contentious material can be removed without resorting to a countrywide ban on, for example, Facebook or YouTube, which would reflect poorly on Russia’s image abroad and anger Internet users at home.” Seems fair, doesn’t it? However we guess that there will be some argument about how the internet shouldn’t be censored, even if only affects a certain number of users, but we guess that will be a debate for another day.
