KFC Offering Free Wi-Fi At All U.K. Restaurants

KFC Offering Free Wi Fi At All U.K. RestaurantsKFC may not seem like a big deal here in the U.S., but they’re pretty popular all over the world, especially in Japan where Colonel Sanders has been a pop culture icon for years. The popular fried-chicken chain will be treating its customers in the U.K. with a little more courtesy as the company is announcing it has teamed up with The Cloud to offer free Wi-Fi to all of its restaurants in the region.

When a KFC customer logs into the free Wi-Fi, they’ll be greeted with a KFC landing page where they’ll be able to view menus, special offers and more. After they view the landing page, they’re free to browse the Internet while they creep ever closer to the grave by munching on several Double Down sandwiches.

As good as this news is for U.K. customers who enjoy free Wi-Fi along with their friend chicken, we have to admit McDonald’s is currently leading the tech race as not only have they been offering free Wi-Fi in their restaurants for several years, they’re also going to be offering wireless charging stations all over Europe.

Internet Proxy Weddings On The Rise

Internet Proxy Weddings On The Rise

My wife and I will soon be celebrating our one-year wedding anniversary next month, and one of the last things we both would have considered would be to get hitched through a webcam, or better known as a proxy wedding. But apparently this method of matrimony is increasing in both its frequency and controversy.

According to a story published by The New York Times, proxy weddings have brought up the questions of immigrant marriage fraud and legitimate consent. Online marriages are currently completely legal and proxy weddings are in no way a completely new idea, but the issue seems to be if both parties are completely consenting to the marriage. (more…)

Facebook News Feed Update May Introduce Multiple Categories

Facebook News Feed Update May Introduce Multiple Categories

Don’t get too excited – this is just a designer’s concept.

Facebook is preparing to unveil changes it’s made to its News Feed tomorrow, but it looks like we may have caught a glimpse of what the company is planning to showcase tomorrow in a story we published last week. Facebook began testing out a new Timeline layout in New Zealand that would do away with the dual-column layout to replace it with a hybrid which would have the person’s information to the left of their profile, while their status updates would be located on the right side.

This doesn’t seem to be the only change Facebook will be making as we can also expect multiple news feeds based on categories, such as music your friends are listening to or images shared on Instagram. In addition to that, we could also expected larger photos to be displayed on Facebook as well as image-based advertisements. (more…)

FreedomPop Sets To Upset ISPs By Offering Free Broadband Internet

FreedomPop Sets To Upset ISPs By Offering Free Broadband Internet

As important as having a reliable home Internet connection is, we know there are people out there who simply can’t afford an additional $50 a month so they could constantly watch cat videos on their Facebook wall. There aren’t many cheap alternatives available in the U.S., but one company is introducing such a service today.

FreemPop offers a broadband plan for its customers to use up to 1GB a month for free as well as an additional tier of 10GB a month for $10. This kind of service would be extremely useful for Internet subscribers who are still stuck on dial-up and would like to be able to have a dedicated connection from their home. (more…)

FreedomPop Hub Burst now available for $89, offers 1GB/month for free

Back in December, we told you about the new Hub Burst wireless router from FreedomPop, which costs $89 up front, but it gives you 1GB of data per month for free, with $10/month getting you 10GB. The router is available now, and it’s meant to support a household of usage, but as long as you’re not streaming movies if you want to keep the free plan.

Sadly, though, FreedomPop only uses WiMAX and the service is limited to just a handful of regions in the US. While the company plans to switch to LTE at some point in the future, availability still may be scarce, but we wouldn’t be surprised if FreedomPop eventually spread the service to most users in the country.

While $10 per month for 10GB of data seems like a steal, some users may just not want to pony up any money at all, but the 1GB of data per month is a rather low amount, especially if you’re using it in a house full of kids. However, as always, FreedomPop offers the opportunity to earn more data by completing different tasks, like adding friends and completing partner promotions.

FreedomPop claims that their $10/month plan is 80% cheaper than your typical DSL or cable offering, but at this point, nothing can really beat the reliability of a solid home wired network can’t quite beat wireless service at this point. However, once LTE rolls around in more areas, FreedomPop may actually become a viable option, but we’ll have to wait and see.

EU Slaps Microsoft With $730 Million Fine Over Internet Explorer

EU Slaps Microsoft With $730 Million Fine Over Internet ExplorerMany years ago there was a huge deal made over Microsoft and their browser, Internet Explorer, in which there were complaints that by bundling Internet Explorer with Windows, it would harm competition between web browsers and affect consumer choice. Now it looks like our time machine works because here we are again hearing about the same problem as the European Commission has slapped Microsoft with a hefty fine of $730 million for failing to comply with their earlier commitment to offer browser choice to their consumers. Google Transparency Report now includes the FBI’s National Security Letters

Google Transparency Report now includes FBI National Security Letters

Google’s Transparency Report has sometimes supplied an unsettling level of detail as to what companies and governments want to know. Americans won’t feel much more comfortable now that Google has added the FBI’s National Security Letters to the mix. The investigative branch wants the numbers vague for secrecy’s sake, but curious residents at least have access to annual data that shows the range of requests for information and roughly how many users were affected — in this case, about 1,000 to 2,000 Google account holders every year since 2009. Google is quick to note that it does what it can to narrow the scope of requests and require search warrants for anything private. We’re slightly reassured by that extra line of defense, although the Transparency Report’s addition is still a reminder that the government is watching some of us.

Microsoft Ending Scroogled TV Campaign

Microsoft Ending Scroogled TV Campaign

Microsoft’s Scroogled media campaign started this past November as the company did its best to educate consumers of how Google conducts its Google Shopping business, specifically how they sell the ranking of products rather than offering legitimate search engine results. And just like that, Microsoft will be pulling the plug on one of its media campaigns taking in the popular search giant.

The news comes from KQED as they spoke to Microsoft senior director of online services Stefan Weitz in regards to the Scroogled ad campaign, which he responded “that part is about finished.” As of this writing, the Scroogled website is still up, although we’re not entirely sure if what Weitz said was in regards to the entire Scroogled campaign or if he was referring to media advertisement.

The Scroogled campaign was only used twice as Microsoft attacked Google’s Google Shopping last November, and just last month, it was used again to attack Google’s Gmail service saying the company tracks your emails in order to target its advertising to its users. I personally was never a fan of the campaign, but at least Microsoft was able to educate Google customers of some of the backdoor deals the company has been making over the years.

The Harlem Shake Goes Political In Egypt

The Harlem Shake, for those unfamiliar, is a video where one person starts dancing in a room full of people minding their own business, before it cuts to the break where the entire room can be seen shaking and gyrating wildly and randomly, more often than not donning ridiculous costumes in the process. Heck, the Harlem Shake got so big that even Google embedded an Easter Egg in YouTube which caused the site itself to get crazy! For the most part, the series of Harlem Shake videos are funny and light hearted, albeit a bit ridiculous, but it seems that over in Egypt, the Harlem Shake has been used by political parties within the country to antagonize each other.

In response to a video last Thursday where 70 or so protestors showed up at the Muslim Brotherhood’s Cairo headquarters and performed the Harlem Shake, the Brotherhood has released their own video where the dancers in the video wore masks of the members of the opposition and did the Harlem Shake themselves. The original upload has since been removed, but since this is the internet, it has been reuploaded and is still circulating (check it out in the video above).

Chrome for Android build may tout a proxy-based speed boost

Chrome for Android on Galaxy Note II

A fast smartphone will only go so far toward improving browser load times if the connection isn’t there to back it up. If a discovery within a recent build of Chrome for Android is any hint, Google may have its own solution to that bottleneck. New code flags reference Google-run proxy servers that would squeeze pages using SPDY, improving performance at least slightly for the bandwidth-deprived. While there’s not much more to go on, the finding is enough to suggest that roughly equivalent boosters like Amazon Silk and Opera Turbo could have a real fight on their hands. We’d advise caution when the flags are only accessible by running an ADB command — they’re clearly not ready for prime time. Should Google flick the switch on compression for Chrome’s main release track, though, Android users may not need a third-party browser to sip the web through a thin straw.
