CloudFlare Is Down, Taking Thousands Of Websites With It

Web accelerator CloudFlare is having network-wide DNS issues, and it looks like all sites that use it as a front-end proxy are down as a result. The company has confirmed the outage with a Tweet that says: “we’re experencing a network-wide issue. Looking into the root cause”. If you have a site using it, you could always try to revert back to your old DNS settings, but I think that they will most likely solve it before any change in those settings will have propagated to the Internet. Google Hangouts receive sign language interpreter support, keyboard shortcuts

Video chat can be an empowering tool for hard-of-hearing internet citizens for whom sign language is easier than voice. Most chat software doesn’t easily bring an interpreter into the equation, however, which spurred Google into adding a Sign Language Interpreter app for Google+ Hangouts. The web component lets chatters invite an interpreter that stays in the background while they verbalize hand gestures. Google is also helping reduce dependencies on the mouse for those who can’t (or just won’t) use one during chat: there’s now keyboard shortcuts to start or stop chats, disable the camera and other basics that would normally demand a click. Both the interpreter app and shortcuts are available today.

YouTube Gets In On The Harlem Shake Craze

If you fancy yourself an Internet-savvy person, you’ll know that the Harlem Shake is absolutely everywhere nowadays. It’s been played on the radio and is even sitting at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 songs for the second week in a row. We’re not sure what it is about the song, but we can’t help but act like complete idiots whenever we hear it being played.

Searching for Harlem Shake videos on YouTube has resulted in over 200,000 results acting completely nuts while the song is playing. But inputting the term “do the harlem shake” into YouTube will result in a completely different thing.

Google is no stranger to hiding easter eggs in a number of their services, and the “do the harlem shake” search is the latest such easter egg. The search results in the entire YouTube page doing the Harlem Shake, which moves around as crazily as most people do when they move to the popular song. It may not be as cool as Google’s “Let it snow” easter egg, or “do a barrel roll,” but it’s still a fun little easter egg nonetheless.

Facebook Showing Off News Feed Changes To Media Next Week

Facebook Showing Off News Feed Changes To Media Next Week

Facebook is once again calling all media to its offices on March 7 at 10 a.m. PT as they have plan to announce a redesign to the service’s News Feed, which many are speculating will be to Facebook’s mobile news feed. Invites have started to be sent out to media, which you can expect to hear the latest on what changes Facebook has made to its News Feed right here.

Earlier today, we reported on some new design changes Facebook is testing out in New Zealand that would change their dual-layer Timeline layout into a single-column layout with the left side of a person’s Facebook page dedicated to displaying information from their “About” page. We don’t believe next week’s event will have any relation to the company’s testing of a new Timelines profile, although we wouldn’t be surprised if it was mentioned.

Facebook also announced yesterday it purchased Microsoft’s Atlas ad business for an estimated $30 to $50 million. Maybe Facebook is planning on throwing more ads to its mobile News Feed, which we’re sure you’ve noticed have been completely out of hand lately.

HTML5 Exploit Can Allow Websites To Fill Up Your Hard Drive

Browsing websites on the Internet could be a great experience, depending on what kind of content you’re searching for. Conducting research for a term paper may not be as rewarding as browsing Reddit, but the process is still the same: input a website address, get to said website. But a recently revealed HTML5 exploit shows some websites can fill your computer’s hard drive with junk data. A lot of junk data.

Web developer Feross Aboukhadijeh created FillDisk.com in order to demonstrate the exploit in HTML5. The Web Storage standard used in HTML5 allows any website to place large amounts of data on your computer’s drive, which could result in a lot of frustration as the user will probably continually wonder why their hard drives are completely out of disk space. Facebook Tests New Timeline Designs, Like Page Button

Did you just start getting used to Facebook’s Timeline to a point where you’re actually starting to like it? That’s too bad because Facebook is announcing they’re going to be making some changes to it, which we’re sure you’re going to hate anyways.

Instead of your Timeline’s current double-layer layout, the test Timeline pages will adopt a single-column layout that will show off all of your posts and updates. The left side of your page, which was used for the double-layer Timeline layout, will contain all of the information located in your “About” section (more…)

Dropbox Suffers From Old Hack As Users Email Addresses Become CompromisedDropbox announced yesterday they’ve surpassed one billion uploads a day as well as a number of new features they’re currently cooking up, but as you’ve probably learned by now, what goes up, must come down.

According to a number of Dropbox users who voiced their frustrations on the services official forums as well as across a number of social media services, it seems Dropbox is still suffering from its system hack that occurred this past July as users are reporting their emails may have been compromised yet again this week.

Email addresses that were created specifically to be used with Dropbox have been receiving spam messages as far as February 20th. One forum user writes, “I have an internal to my company email address that I used for Dropbox only and I am getting the same fake paypal scam emails. Google Testing New Navigation Grid To Replace Black Bar Eyesore

Google Testing New Navigation Grid To Replace Black Bar Eyesore

If you’ve navigated your way to the majority of Google-owned properties like Gmail, Google Drive or just Google.com, then you’ve probably noticed the black navigation bar that is prominently displayed at the top of the page. Considering how visually appealing the majority of Google’s properties are, their black navigation bar has been an eyesore since it was introduced two years ago.

Google is reportedly testing a new version of its Google.com homepage that gets rid of the black navigation bar. The way users would navigate through Google’s services would be by clicking a grid icon. If the tests go well, Google plans to roll out the improved navigation to all users.

This isn’t the first time Google has attempted to ditch its black navigation bar as they moved its list of services into a drop-down menu that came down from the Google logo. The test method was scrapped six weeks later due to users finding the new design made it harder to find Google’s additional services.

China Expanding 4M Broadband Coverage To 70% Internet Users

China has been reporting some serious growth in its ability to provide broadband service to its people as not only did they add 51 million new Internet users in 2012, but they’ve also announced a new policy that would demand all new residences be equipped with fiber network connections starting April 1.

In addition to expanding their residential broadband coverage, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology plans to expand their fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) connections to support 35 million households in 2013. This move will give over 70 percent of Chinese residences 4M broadband connections or faster. Ultimately, China plans to make broadband Internet available to 250 million users by 2015, which we’re sure they’ll reach that mark if they continue their current rate of growth.

By the end of the year, China expects to have 180,000 new 3G base stations and 1.3 million Wi-Fi hotspots. Meanwhile, here in the U.S., some cable companies believe they shouldn’t be offering better Internet service due to the belief their customers don’t want it.
