Facebook Gets More Expressive

composer tc Facebook Gets More Expressive Facebook’s series of tests never fails to impress. The social network’s latest test could prove to be a game changer, as it should convince its millions of users to post status updates more frequently. As noted by TechCrunch, Facebook appears to be testing with a small group of users a new status composer that lets users share what they are doing. The new composer, which is situated underneath the standard “How are feeling, ___?” question, also has a series of nifty pre-made emoticons and activities such as feelings, eating, drinking, and etc. (more…)

Sony upgrades Music Unlimited to 320Kbps streaming on Android, PS3 and the web

Sony Music Unlimited on multiple devices

Higher quality audio is a staple of the experience for a growing number of streaming music services, most notably Spotify. Sony won’t let itself become the exception to the rule: Music Unlimited now has an option for a much more detailed 320Kbps bitrate. The quality upgrade is staggered and is initially active on Android devices, the PlayStation 3 and the web player, while desktops, iOS, the PlayStation Vita and home theater gear will get improved tunes later on in the year. Music Unlimited won’t appease those who want a consistent experience in the near term, then — still, it might be enough for listeners whose Xperia serves as a primary jukebox.

YouTube Considering Paid Subscriptions To Launch This Spring

YouTube Considering Paid Subscriptions To Launch This Spring

There’s nothing worse than paying for television service to only be interested in a small amount of channels while the rest are barely touched. Television subscribers are paying a ton of money in order to watch their favorite shows, although we know many of you would prefer to pay only for the channels you want to watch. YouTube is clearly aware there’s interest in this kind of content consumption and is reportedly preparing a paid subscription service for a number of its channels.

During an interview with Adweek, a Google spokesman spoke of the possibility of providing paid subscriptions in YouTube’s future:

“We have long maintained that different content requires different types of payment models. The important thing is that, regardless of the model, our creators succeed on the platform. There are a lot of our content creators that think they would benefit from subscriptions, so we’re looking at that.”

There’s no word what channels would be considered good enough to warrant a paid subscription, but prices would range somewhere between $1 – $5 per month for access to the content. We certainly would pay within that range for Epic Meal Time and maybe some of those channels that involve girls jumping on trampolines without even hesitating.

Google Flights Rolls Out Destination Search By Region

When you’re searching for a flight, there’s nothing more annoying than having to remember airport codes as we’re sure many of you have absolutely no idea what your destination airport code is. If you do know the airport code, it may not be the cheapest option at times since some travelers wouldn’t mind landing in a not-as-used airport in order to save a few shekels.

Google Flights updated its service today that allows its users to search based on their destination instead of a particular airport. Instead of typing in “Tokyo, Japan” for example, you’ll be able to just enter “Japan” to allow Google Flights to deliver a number of flight options.

Google+ Ranked 2nd Place Behind Facebook In Active Users Report

In the world of social media, there’s no doubt Facebook is the absolute king of complete time wasters, which leaves a number of people interested in social media wondering what service follows Facebook. A new report published by Trendstream may surprise you to who exactly is following Facebook in the amount of active users it has.

In Trendstream’s Global Web Index, the fourth quarter of 2012 ended with Facebook having nearly 700 million active users, with second place going to Google+ with 343 million active users. This is extremely surprising news as I’m sure everyone wrote off Google’s attempt at a social network platform a long time ago.

Cuba Confirms Underwater Fiber Optic Cable To Venezuela Is Active

A report by Internet analysis firm Renesys was released earlier this week where they believe Cuba activated an undersea fiber-optic cable the week prior, bringing broadband speeds to the country. The undersea fiber-optic cable has officially been confirmed by Etecsa, which is a Cuba’s government-owned telecom provider.

The cable runs 994 miles, which is estimated to cost $70 million, and connects directly to Venezula and has been operational since August. It was originally completed in February 2011 to then begin operating in July 2011, which officials didn’t explain why exactly it nearly took a year to start using it.

Chrome beta for Android exposes WebGL, brings more 3D to the mobile web

Chrome beta for Android makes WebGL an easy toggle for mobile speed freaks

Did you hop on the new Chrome beta track for Android? There’s a treat waiting under the hood. Google’s Brandon Jones has confirmed that the latest build enables the flags page, letting us toggle hidden elements — including the rather big deal of WebGL support. Anyone with reasonably quick graphics can now experiment with full 3D on their phone without having to hack or use a plugin, whether it’s wild music videos or lovefests. Just remember that the experience won’t be as seamless as it is on the desktop. You’ll likely have to force the desktop version of a page just to see the graphics code, and few if any WebGL developers are optimizing for the performance and screen size of a phone. If you’d still like to get a peek at what could be the future of the mobile web, hit the source to join the beta flock.

German Court Rules That Internet Is An “Essential” Part Of Life

internet German Court Rules That Internet Is An Essential Part Of LifeDon’t you just hate it when your internet acts up, leaving you frustrated especially since there’s really nothing you can do about it and hope that your ISP gets it fixed ASAP. For the most part, not having internet is not a huge deal as there are plenty of other activities one can engage in, but for business users this could be a major problem as it could result in money lost, deals falling through and etc. Now interestingly it seems that over in Germany, the courts have ruled that customers have a right to demand compensation from their service providers in the event that their internet access is disrupted.
