FCC Chairman proposes gigabit internet in all 50 states by 2015

You may know a little about Google Fiber, the insanely fast internet that arrived in Kansas City not too long ago, but the unfortunate news is that Google isn’t really planning on rolling its Fiber service out to a majority of the US. However, FCC Chairman Julius Genachoski is calling for gigabit internet in all 50 states by 2015.

fcc-chairman-genachowski

Genachowski is calling it the “Gigabit City Challenge,” and he wants all 50 states to have at least one city with gigabit internet availability by the time 2015 rolls around. He’s relying upon ISPs and state governments to help make it all a reality. Of course, other areas in the US have already implemented the faster internet protocol, mostly thanks to private funding, but Genachowski wants ISPs to step up.

Overall, the FCC said that there are currently 42 communities in 14 states with access to fiber-based internet, so we’re already seeing some progress, but Genachowksi notes that as long as “we build it, innovation will come.” He also says that the US ultimately needs this in order to “drive economic growth” and compete globally.

Of course, this is only a goal of the FCC’s and not necessarily a mandate, so they’re really only encouraging ISPs and state governments to step up, rather than force them to introduce gigabit internet, so we’re going to have to see a lot of cooperation between certain parties if we want to see high-speed, fiber internet in all 50 states anytime soon.

FCC Chairman Wants Gigabit Internet Across All 50 U.S. States By 2015

While China is demanding new residences have fiber-optic connections starting April 1, 2013, here in the U.S. we’re still struggling to make our Internet speeds as good as they are in other countries, including China. If you want gigabit internet speeds, then you’ll have to move to Kansas City where Google Fiber is currently supplying gigabit speeds to residents who choose to use the service. That’s not good enough for FCC Chairman Julius Genachoski as he has issued a challenge that could bring gigabit internet by 2015.

Genachoski has issued the “Gigabit City Challenge” where he would like all 50 states in the U.S. have at least one gigabit community by 2015. He’s hoping this challenge will help spark more communities to adopt gigabit internet, which would result in the development of “next-generation applications and services that will drive economic growth and global competitiveness.”

According to the FCC, there are currently 42 communities across 14 states with fiber-based internet, which is certainly a good start. But 14 states out of 50 in total still isn’t even half of the country, which is staggering considering just how much people rely on the Internet these days.

Hotmail Users Switched To Outlook.com Still Missing Emails Since October

In July 2012, Microsoft announced they would be replacing its Hotmail service with a new webmail version of Microsoft Outlook. The launch apparently went well for the coming months as the company announced it reached one million users using the service within 24 hours as well as surpassing 10 million users. But it seems all is not well in the land of Outlook.com as users are reporting their old emails have been missing ever since they switched over to the new site since October.

Users have taken to Microsoft’s support pages to voice their issues of old email not showing up, with so many users reporting on the issue that support thread has reached over 25 pages of chatter. The issues seem to have started popping up in October, and even though Microsoft forum moderators have been posting messages promising a fix to the problem, a fix still hasn’t been implemented making many users extremely frustrated. One forum poster wrote:

FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! We have provided hundreds of examples over the last SIX MONTHS!!! Take a look at the history on all of the threads concerning this problem and make a reference db. Get this FIXED Microsoft! Totally unacceptable service, an outrage for this to have gone on as long as it has.

We’ve reached out to Microsoft and are awaiting comment on this situation to see if they have a fix coming soon for these Outlook.com users.

Kim Dotcom’s MEGA Will Give Users 50GB Of Free Storage And More

Kim Dotcoms MEGA Will Give Users 50GB Of Free Storage And More

In the world of file-hosting websites, one of the biggest had to have been Megaupload, although it suffered a shut down last year that has since sent owner Kim Dotcom scrambling to create a new portal for free file hosting. Kim Dotcom announced a new site, simply called Mega, will be launching on January 20, but today, he took to his Twitter to announce the new site will offer 50GB of online storage for free.

Compared to similar services like Dropbox (2GB), Google Drive (5GB) and Skydrive (7GB), Mega will offer the most amount of free online storage we’ve ever seen and one we’re sure the other mentioned services will not be matching any time soon.

In addition to that, Kim Dotcom also announced he and his team are currently working on giving previous Megaupload premium users the same status with Mega, although his lawyers say it isn’t possible at this time. Dotcom is also looking into getting the files back of Megaupload users as his team of lawyers are working to get those files back by seeking the court’s permission to transfer the data over.

Zynga Drops From Top Spot In Facebook Gaming To Candy Crush Saga

For a number of years, Zynga has been sitting atop the Facebook-gaming mountain as their games have always been popular ever since FarmVille. The last couple of months haven’t been too kind for the king of Facebook gaming as it’s been sued for copyright infringement by EA and has shut down a number of its titles just to save a buck. It looks like their popularity is slowly dwindling as today, we hear there’s a new king sitting atop the Facebook-gaming mountain.

King.com has officially taken the #1 spot from Zynga in the world of Facebook games as three of its titles have made it into Facebook’s top 10 list for this month. The game that has pushed FarmVille 2 out of its #1 spot is Candy Crush Saga, which is a match-3 game similar to Bejeweled. Candy Crush Saga has over 9.7 million daily players, while Zynga’s FarmVille 2 has 8.8 million.

What helps Candy Crush Saga’s popularity is the fact the game synchronizes across all devices its played on, which currently is Facebook, Android and iOS devices. Zynga released a FarmVille title last year on iOS, but had issues when it came to synching with your Facebook game. Currently there’s no FarmVille 2 game available on mobile.

Facebook Graph Search: A Great Strategic Move

facebook search graph screen Facebook Graph Search: A Great Strategic MoveEarlier today, we laid out the basic functionality of the new Graph Search live from the Facebook HQ in Menlo Park. Beyond the new features, it is interesting to look at how this will help Facebook going forward, including monetization. The “business” question was raised during the Q&A sessions and it is completely legitimate, especially when you think about the potential infrastructure cost of running this resource-intensive, 100% personalized, feature. Facebook is known to be a great engineering company, so there is little to worry about how much computing resources will be spent as Facebook will undoubtedly run it efficiently. What’s more interesting is that while Facebook wants to project an image of humility around Graph Search, this is definitely a key launch in the company’s history – here’s why in five points: (more…)
