Microsoft Launches “Scroogled” Campaign

Microsoft is calling out its search competitor Google, particularly Google Shopping, formerly called Google Product Search. The Redmond-based technology titan has just launched Scroogled – what seems to be a portmanteau of Google and screwed. Microsoft calls it a campaign for “honest search to help shoppers this holiday season.” It’s also a campaign to warn online shoppers that Google is now supporting paid ads on its shopping results. Facebook Gifts now offering digital iTunes gift cards

It’s safe to assume that many of us spend hours a day on Facebook – whether it be chatting, uploading photos or checking our news feed for news and updates, there’s certainly a lot of things that can be done, and soon it seems you won’t need to open iTunes should you wish to send a gift card to one of your Facebook friends. As you can see in the screenshot above, Facebook has recently announced that Facebook users will now be able to send their friends iTunes gifts via the Facebook Gifts platform. Through this platform, users will be able to send various iTunes purchases, such as songs or albums or you can even gift your friend a gift card to let them decide how they want to spend it.

“Starting today with Facebook Gifts, you can instantly gift your friends iTunes digital gifts and recommend albums, movies, games, apps, and more available on the iTunes Store.

Search for a specific song or album to recommend, or let your friend decide. iTunes digital gifts are available for $10, $15, $25, or $50.”

Google+ gets integrated into the Google Play store

We’re sure that many developers get frustrated at times thanks to the internet trolls who sometimes leave fake reviews, making negative claims about an app even though they are false. This is partly thanks to the fact that we get to hide behind our internet screen names, but it looks like reviews on Google Play could soon take a serious turn as Google has integrated Google+ into the Google Play store. Basically what this means is that if you wanted to leave a review on an app that you’ve been using, whether positive or negative, you will need to sign in with your Google+ profile and as you can see in the screenshot above, the reviews will now show that it has been reviewed by “A Google user”. We’re not sure if full integration has been implemented, but we expect that similar to YouTube, your real name (or whatever name you’ve listed on your Google+ account) will be revealed, which means that silly and troll-ish reviews will soon come with a real name attached to them, hopefully making reviews a more legit read.

Facebook Privacy Message Is Pointless. Stop Posting

I’ve noticed the privacy message over the week-end, but I didn’t think much about it until it started to show up in more and more feeds. Basically, the idea was that by posting a simple message prohibiting the use of your information, you would be protected from what many see as invasion of their privacy, even if the Facebook terms of use say otherwise. Of course, posting such a message has no legal consequences. It reads like this: (more…)

Instagram launches badges that webmasters can embed into their websites

You know those little badges you see on some websites that link you to the website’s Facebook page or Google+ page? Well it looks like Instagram will be getting a badge of their own. This will allow website owners to link their Instagram profiles on their website, which we guess is the follow up to the company launching web profiles not too long ago. Apparently many users have been requesting for them and with the launch of their new web profiles, it could be thought of as Instagram being something like Flickr in which users can show off their collection of photographs. According to Instagram’s Amy Cole (via TechCrunch):

We’re excited to launch Instagram badges today to make it even easier for people to find the Instagram profiles that they care about. Brands, businesses, and public figures have been asking us for badges for a long time. Now that Instagram web profiles are available to everyone, it made sense for us to launch badges and give people a way to easily access the profiles from other sites across the web.

Also as TechCrunch has noted, this move will help Instagram get out of the pigeon hole in which many have assumed that it is only a mobile app, when in reality it looks like it will be making its mark on the desktop as well.

French carrier Orange announces Facebook “social calling” service

Facebook phoneThere have been plenty of rumors suggesting that Facebook could be interested in making another mobile phone despite the less than stellar reception they had with the HTC ChaCha. Whether those rumors pan out remain to be seen, but in the meantime it certainly looks like the social networking giant has a lot of interest as far as the mobile scene is concerned. French carrier Orange has recently announced that they would be offering a “social calling” service via Facebook. Basically what this does is that it enables users to call each other or even create group calls without needing to know the other person’s number. Orange, of course, will be one powering this new “social calling” service and it will be running in conjunction with the carrier’s new IP-based calling/messaging app, Libon.

According to Orange, the Facebook social calling service will be going live in France first come summer of 2013, although we expect that if the social calling service is well received, it will soon start rolling out to other parts of Europe and possibly the rest of the world. If a new Facebook phone were ever to materialize, we’d expect that this social calling service might play a big part in it.
