CosTrader Costume Buy & Sell Market: Website Merchant Cosplay

There are thousands of sites that makers can use to sell their costumes, including major ones such as eBay, Etsy and deviantART. But if you want a site that’s focused solely on costumes, check out CosTrader. It’s a new website for people looking to buy or sell costumes, whether brand new or used.

CosTrader allows sellers to put up any number of items to sell at no charge. The site then takes a 3% cut when an item is sold. You need to create an account to buy or sell from the site. It’s a minor inconvenience but I guess it’s to ensure that both buyers and sellers can easily contact and identify each other.

Put on your browser and head to CosTrader to see what’s on display, which is admittedly not much because the site is still young. A market lives and dies by its offerings, so hopefully it attracts quality costume makers.

SickWeather Maps out Where the Sick People Are (So You Can Avoid Them)

There are a lot of apps that make use of information that people have posted on their public social network profiles. For example, there’s Hell is Other People, which is an app that helps anti-social people avoid other people by utilizing other users’ check-in data.

Then there’s SickWeather, which maps out where all the sick people are so healthy people can stay healthy by avoiding areas where these sick people are.

SickWeather uses an advanced algorithm to check status updates and posts on Facebook and Twitter for any mention of an illness. The app will take note of the sick user’s location and indicate where they are on a map. It’s like a weather map of where the sick people are located instead of, well, the actual weather. It can even show the movement of outbreaks over time.

Areas where sick people can be found are designated as sick zones. Users can also choose to search the map by illness, ie. the flu, chicken pox, or the common cold. There’s no mention of zombie outbreaks on the list though. You can also set the app to alert you automatically to specific ailments.

SickWeather is available as both a website and as a free iOS mobile app.

Social Network Cemetery? Sanctri is a Facebook App Where People Can Mourn

I’ve found out about the untimely demise of several people not through friends or family, but through Facebook. It’s odd and a bit depressing to see messages of condolences sandwiched in between selfies and links to The Oatmeal’s latest comic, but it’s happening a lot more frequently these days as more people get into social media.

Grieving in person is one thing. Mourning on Facebook is another. With this in mind, Jono Milner founded Sanctri, a Facebook app where bereaved Facebook users can mourn and remember their loved one. It’s still on Facebook, but it offers tools and resources to go through the entire mourning process.

Milner explains: “Facebook is today’s public forum. People used to pay tribute in the classifieds section of the newspapers – now it’s on Facebook. Many people want to come together to remember someone online – especially given that we’re such a mobile population these days.”

He has a point. On Sanctri, users can create social memorials, a Lifebook, and make donations to charities. But is there a need for the app? Milner adds: “You’re still in Facebook, but a step away from the everyday chatter. Grief just doesn’t mix with photos from last night’s party. You don’t follow someone – you ‘remember’ them. You don’t ‘like’ something; you’re moved by it.”

What Searches Look Like With the Top Million Sites Removed

At this point it’s ludicrous to think of using any other search engine than Google. But while it’s very effective, you’ll find your search results coming from many of the web’s top sites again and again. What if you wanted to find something a little more eclectic? Well, a new search engine called Million Short offers just that by letting you ignore the top million websites on the internet.

Ever Forced Yourself to Quit Checking a Certain Website?

Some websites just become a part of your routine, a habit. You check for updates five, 20, 60 times a day. You hit refresh more times than you can keep track of. It seems a lot like an addiction. And sometimes you need to quit, for your own well being.

Happy Hour Virus: Book of E-lies

Ad agency TDA_Boulder came up with Happy Hour Virus, a website that fakes computer problems. The idea is that you’ll be able to use the “problem” as an excuse to leave work. I don’t think it actually has a chance of getting you off of work, but you can use it to punk your non-techie colleagues for a few seconds.

As you can see in the screenshot above, Happy Hour Virus has three tricks. There’s the ol’ Windows nemesis, the Blue Screen of Death, complete with pseudo code cascading down the screen:

Then there’s the rare but dreaded kernel panic prompt from OS X:

Finally there’s the system agnostic broken screen glitch:

The hilarious thing about this fake malware is that it will disappear when you press the Escape button. Even the most clueless office worker is bound to stumble upon that “solution” and help you be productive again. But as I said, it can work as a harmless prank. Try out Happy Hour Virus here.

How Many Horror Movie References Can You Spot On Bing's Homepage?

Bing’s still the underdog in the search engine wars; remaining in perpetual second place to Google. And while it’s doubtful that Microsoft will ever win the overall search engine war, today Bing totally wins the Halloween makeover battle with a homepage that pays homage to countless horror movies.

A History of the Apple Mouse Created Exclusively With CSS

A History of the Apple Mouse Created Exclusively With CSS

The most impressive thing about Josh Bader’s website that documents the history of the Apple Mouse isn’t how comprehensive it is. After all, you can count the number of major hardware revisions Apple’s made to its mouse since 1983 on two hands. No, what makes Bader’s site particularly wonderful is that all the illustrations have been painstaking created using nothing but HTML CSS.

Real Life Instagram: Life Imitating App

Last year we saw a concept for a pair of glasses that applies Instagram’s filters through its lenses. Bruno Ribeiro took a more literal approach with his Real Life Instagram series, taking not just Instagram’s filters but its entire interface into the real world.

But the thing that makes Real Life Instagram so effective is its acknowledgement of the app users’ tastes. Bruno frames random objects – oftentimes just portions of them – with his cardboard interface, pre-liked and pre-hashtagged.

Instagramception. Ah, the failure of freedom. When you give everyone the ability to express themselves, you’ll quickly realize that most of us don’t have anything worthwhile to say. But I’d still take that over silence any day.
