Realistic Facebook Security Simulator: Can You Keep Up?

One thing so many users complain about Facebook is its privacy settings – or lack of consistency thereof. The social network’s privacy policy has been changed and updated so many times over the last few years that I’m not sure what parts of my profile I can fully hide or control anymore.

Spotting the humor in the whole situation are the folks behind the Realistic Facebook Security Simulator. The fact that it’s got the word “realistic” in the title means that it’s not.

Basically, you’re tasked with answering a series of questions regarding what you share on the social network, and you have to answer fast because you’ve only got 20 seconds before the timer expires and new privacy settings are rolled out. The questions and answers are sometimes confusing – but maybe they made it that way to test if you’ll still know what should be done if you’re drunk or too sleepy to think clearly.

So what are you waiting for? Check the simulator now and see how well (or how badly) you’ll fare.

The NSA Says an ‘Internal Error’ Caused Its Outage Not a DDoS Attack

The NSA Says an 'Internal Error' Caused Its Outage Not a DDoS Attack

The completely competent folks of the NSA are saying that its nuked website is a result of an internal error, a glitch, a mistake and not because hackers launched a DDoS attack on it. That’s cool, the NSA didn’t go down because of hackers but because it screwed itself up.

Twitter IPO Coming Soon: Get Ready to Buy in 140 Characters or Less

There’s always some excitement when a tech company finally makes its IPO. The most notable, at least recently, was Facebook’s. Now, Twitter is set to have their own IPO, right around Thanksgiving.

The Twitter IPO is supposed to be unveiled soon. They will sell about 70 million shares, priced at $17 to $20. This will raise nearly $1.4 billion dollars, and will become the second biggest tech IPO since Facebook. Twitter hasn’t revealed if the shares will be listed for open market trading, but it will be listed on the NYSE, under the symbol TWTR.

The biggest issue with Twitter is how they can convince investors that they will be able to generate revenue – and profit – from its more than 200 million users.

Send Messages Hidden in Encrypted Images with Crypstagram

If you need to send someone a message but have to be discrete about it, then you might want to give Crypstagram a shot. It’s an image sharing site does more than just provide you with a means to share images with other people.

That’s because the image has to go through their system first before it’s ready for sharing.

Crypstagrammagnify

What Crypstagram is encrypt your image by embedding a message into it. When I say “embed,” I do mean embed because it doesn’t just add text onto your image as an overlay or caption. It actually incorporates your message into the image and distorts it in the process.

Just select the image you want to use, upload it to the site, and add your message. Once it’s encrypted, you’ll end up with a surreal, glitched out image. You can then choose to share it or download it to your computer so you can email it to the recipient for decryption – which can only be achieved if you have the proper password.

Try it out for yourself here.

Turn Your Social Media Profiles into Business Cards

Social media plays a big part in people’s lives these days. Not just in their personal lives, but also in what they do for a living as well. If you’re one of those people, then you might be interested in the social media-themed business card generators by Stephen Ou.

Over on SocialBusinessCard you can generate business card designs patterned after three of the largest social networks are available: Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Creating your own personalized car using these designs is pretty easy. Just choose which one you want, link your actual social media account using the site’s app, and your card will be generated right after, using your digital profile as a starting point.

After editing the text on the card, you can then choose to upload the custom card design to your business card maker of your choice.

The most impressive part? Stephen just graduated high school, and already has launched several other successful online apps.

Mummify Lets You Store Permanent Copies of Web Pages

Sometimes, bookmarking a website just isn’t enough. A permanent copy is different from a physical copy, so printing the page just isn’t the same as actually saving it. Of course, you could also choose to save the entire page with all the elements on your computer, but if you plan to do that with a lot of pages, then that could turn into a confusing mess of files and folders pretty quickly.

So why don’t you Mummify it instead?

mummify 1 620x432magnify

Mummify is a service that lets you save and store complete copies of web pages on their online servers. There won’t be any extra folders to monitor, no files to trace, and no printouts to monitor. Plus, they’re offering the service for free – at least, for the first 10 pages that you choose to Mummify. It’ll cost you $10 to $15 a month for up to 50 mummified pages per month.

All you have to do is enter the URL of the site you want to save to Mummify’s system. It will then give you a shortlink directing to the page or a cache of it, in case the page moves, changes, or no longer exists. Keep in mind that dynamically-generated content which is pushed to the page view JavaScript probably won’t be properly cached by the service.

You can check out and try Mummify here.

Placekitten: Let Kitties Take the Place of Blank Spaces in Web Designs

Who doesn’t love kittens? I’m no professional web designer, but I’ve tried designing a site or two, and let me just say it involved a lot of hard work. One of the tiring aspects of web design is having to insert placeholders for designs, images, or code that aren’t ready yet.

So to make that aspect of design less of a pain and a bit more fun, Placekitten was born.

Placekittenmagnify

It’s essentially an image gallery of sorts that was created with web designers in mind. Using the site, developers, designers, and cat lovers can generate various sizes of cat and kitten images that can be used as placeholders in their designs. Just use the URL below to get started.

http://placekitten.com/width/height

For example, if you want an image that’s 300×200, just type “http://placekitten.com/300/200” into your URL to get your correctly-sized kitty.

Here’s a couple of examples generated by the service:

Awwwwww. Placekitten exists thanks to Mark James.
