TARDIS Engagement Ring Box is Shinier on the Inside

When you care enough to give the very best, you’d best give it in something as awesomely geeky as this custom TARDIS ring box, built by Modelmaker Paul Pape. Give it to your favorite companion and let them know how you feel.
tardis ring box
Unlike the actual TARDIS, this one has rings inside instead of a control panel. And since these rings are a symbol of how your heart feels, it really is bigger on the inside. It holds two rings and even lights up. Paul created all of the wiring and switches himself, and the box is made out of micro plywood and sheets of his laser-cut wood door and window model pieces called Pop-Out Woodies.

He’s actually made a couple of versions of the box – one with doors that open to reveal a pair of rings, and the other that pops up from the top and holds a single ring.

When you give one of these, it says “I really like you. Care to step inside my big blue box?”

Paul makes all sorts of awesome custom engagement ring boxes, and you can order one for yourself for between $300 and $800(USD) depending on the complexity.

Someone’s Going to Get a $20,000 Flash Mob Wedding Proposal Soon

If you were eyeing that flash mob wedding that was up for sale on Gilt, then too bad, because it looks like someone already beat you to it.

News about the 20-grand proposal offer first made its rounds on the interwebs about a week ago. It obviously caught someone’s eye because it is now marked as ‘sold out.’

flash mob wedding proposalThe offer included providing the proposer with up to 30 dancers to pose as dinner guests, who will be guided by an ‘award-winning’ photographer. A professional videographer to capture the entire event on tape (and for YouTube) will also be available at the proposer’s disposal. Of course, it also included a gourmet five-course tasting menu and wine pairings at New York’s Artisanal Fromagerie and Bistro for the happy couple. I’m not sure if the flash mob itself gets anything to eat.

There’s also a specified date for the proposal: December 12th. So whoever bought it better have that ring ready, because the twelfth is coming very soon.

Watch This Wedding Photographer’s Hair Catch on Fire (Because Apparently It’s Fun)

Photographer Jacki Bruniquel’s hair got too close to a candle and caught fire while shooting Murray and Emma Burton’s wedding ceremony. Thankfully, one of the groomsmen quickly ran after her to extinguish the flames and everyone started to laugh. Because, let’s admit it, people burning is fun. At least in South Africa. More »

TMNT Wedding Cake: The Caterer Served Pizza

One of my guilty pleasures growing up were the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Though I’m not sure that I would have wanted Michaelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello, and Raphael crashing my wedding reception with their sword- and nunchuk-wielding antics.

tmnt wedding cake

I’m actually having a hard time believing this was a wedding cake, as there’s no bride or groom on top – unless it was four masked anthropomorphic turtles who got hitched that day. It’s more likely that it was a groom’s cake. Either way, it’s pretty special. My favorite part is the bottom that looks like a deep-dish pizza, complete with onions, pepperonis, olives and cheese – all made in sweet, instead of savory form.

And while TMNT purists will say their bandanas aren’t quite the right colors and they’d never serve a pan pizza, I still think it’s great. What are you eating?

R2-D2 Engagement Ring: R2-I-Do

Some Star Wars fans really go all-out, and this custom-designed R2-D2 engagement ring is no exception. This is no cheap Cracker Jack box trinket – oh, remember when the prizes weren’t all made out of paper? – it’s made from pricey metals and precious gemstones.

r2 d2 engagement ring 1

This amazing R2-D2 ring was created by Paul Michael Bierker as a custom-commissioned piece for graphic and tattoo artist Joe, who wanted to present it to his bride-to-be, Emily. The ring is made from precious metals inlaid with blue sapphires and a big-honkin’ diamond in the middle. Joe started out by sending along some concept images to Paul, and from there, he really ran with it.

And while Joe’s spelling leaves a little to be desired (baggets? saphire?) he more than makes up for it with his spirit and creativity. Joe has truly stepped up the game for geeks in love everywhere.

Check out this short video of Joe presenting this awesome droid ring to Emily, and a little more imagery of this jewelry masterpiece.

The only thing better would have been if he dressed up as C-3PO when he proposed to her. And yes, those were their Halloween costumes in the video. I think.

Couple Gets Married in Klingon Wedding Ceremony, Everyone Lives

Nerds will do some pretty strange things for their love of Star Trek. Nerds like newlyweds Jossie Sockertopp and Sonnie Gustavsson. They have the honor of being Britain’s first known couple to get married in a Klingon wedding and were married at a Star Trek convention over the weekend.
klingon wedding
Despite the Klingon tradition of violence and bloodshed, no one was killed during the ceremony  – though we’re not sure about the reception. They met four years ago at the retirement home where they both work, and after watching the episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine where Worf marries Jadzia Dax in a traditional Klingon ceremony, they decided to do the same.

I hope they will be happy for many years, because the Klingon divorce ceremony far less pleasant.

Stargate Wedding Ring Spins You into a Whole New World

I love sci-fi, but I just never understood all of the hype about the Stargate franchise. I’m more a Star Trek or Babylon 5 kind of guy. Sure, it’s ok. I don’t think it’s great sci-fi. (No throwing stuff at me.) That’s probably why I wasn’t invited to any Stargate themed weddings.

stargate ring

The Chapa’ai ring you see here was conceived by Seattle-based company Wedding Band Designs. The coolest feature is that the inner ring spins like a real stargate, without the need for visual effects. If you still have Flash running on your computer, you can even check it out in action below:

It’s made from 14K white gold with the chevrons made from 18K yellow gold. The Chapa’ai ring is available as a custom piece only, and you’ll need to contact Wedding Band Designs for a price quote.

It’s an appropriate ring for marriage since you are certainly stepping into a strange new world.

Bridal Brokerage Recycles Weddings So Someone Else Can Buy Your “Special” Day

People fall in and out of love all the time. Unfortunately, some couples decide to break up after making all sorts of wedding plans and preparations. Not only is that exceptionally heartbreaking, it also results in a whole lot of wasted time and money.

So many weddings are getting canceled every year (over 250,000!) that it has caused services like Bridal Brokerage to emerge.

Bridal BrokerageBridal Brokerage basically buys cancelled weddings and sells them to interested buyers who are hoping to put together a wedding within a short period of time. It’s a win-win-win situation, at least according to the wedding brokers: sellers get their deposits back, suppliers enjoy uninterrupted business, and the buyers can purchase pre-planned weddings at lower prices.

It’s an interesting business but the whole thing is pretty sad at the same time. One good thing (if there’s any to be found) regarding the sheer number of cancelled weddings is that at least the couples who broke up before tying the knot won’t end up getting a divorce a couple of weeks or months later.
