Anatomical Portraits Go Beyond Skin Deep

I’m sure you’ve seen anatomical models of the different human systems when you took biology in high school. There’s the good, old skeletal system and of course, the muscular system.

Maybe Koen Hauser had these lessons in mind when he came up with his recent series, because they’re creative, different, and probably all anatomically correct.

Anatomy Portrait

Dubbed the ‘Modische Atlas der Anatomie’ or the ‘Fashionable Atlas of Anatomy’ when translated, the series features digital manipulations that literally strip the skin off of the models to reveal the organs and muscles underneath.

The images exude contrasting elements, with models posing in a relaxed manner while their bones and tendons are revealed in the same image.

Anatomy Portrait1

Even more impressive is the fact that he came up with this series and published it over a decade ago.

With this series, Koen was able to masterfully and artistically combine both science and art into one neat package.

Vending Machine Dishes out Dishes

I’ve seen some wacky vending machines over the years, and there’s no indication there’s an end in sight to the world’s obsession with buying inappropriate stuff out of machines. In this particular case, we have a vending machine that dispenses dishes.

dish vending machine

Why, you may ask would you do this? Well, this machine isn’t loaded with fragile Bone China. It’s actually filled with Corelle dishes which are designed to be chip resistant. Hence, this was actually part of a guerilla marketing stunt to show off how durable these plates are.

I’m guessing the machine has one of those foam pads at the bottom like they have in machines loaded with glass bottles filled with liquids. Though It would be pretty impressive if it doesn’t. Even more impressive would be a bottom tray loaded with concrete and nails sticking out of it, though I’d assume that’s not the case here. Regardless, buying a whole set of dishes this way would be a huge pain in the butt, never mind how to carry them home, but at least it gets the marketing point across.

Finland sets new mobile phone record… by throwing one

Finland sets new mobile phone record by throwing one

Admittedly, Finland’s seen better days in the mobile industry, but that hasn’t stopped the townspeople in Savonlinna from hosting the 13th annual Mobile Phone Throwing World Championships to brighten things up. In fact, the recycling awareness event went so well that 18-year-old Ere Karjalainen set a new championship record of 101.46 meters. The secret? Just an old Nokia device (obviously) plus a bit of preparation the day before — “mainly by drinking.”

While Finnish organizer Christine Lund claims this is a new world record, a little digging revealed that Britain’s Chris Hughff threw — as a guest participant — a 102.68 meter distance at JIM Mobile’s Belgium Championships earlier this year. Despite the utilization of a laser rangefinder plus video proof after the break, Lund dismissed the “unofficial” event’s record, according to the AAP. Regardless, Karjalainen is no doubt the latest sweetheart amongst Finnish geeks.

Super Mario Spiral Clock: Down the 16-Bit Hole

Every time is Super Mario time with this spiral clock featuring characters and icons from Nintendo’s timeless platformer. You might find it hard to tell the time on this clock because of its pseudo-asymmetrical look. That’s all I see when I look at this thing.

Warp-pipe to Etsy and pay $25 (USD) to get the clock. Seller BackStreet Crafts also sells other geeky clocks and spiral clocks.

Prism Glasses Let You See Straight While Lying Down

I read in bed a lot. I also watch TV in bed a lot. In fact, there’s a lot of things I do in bed that I probably shouldn’t (like eat dinner – yes, I do that sometimes), but sometimes, I just can’t help it. It’s just too comfortable.

Prism Glasses1Of course I do all that sitting down or propped up on my back with pillows. But in case you’re the type who actually prefers to lie down while doing all these (except for eating, that is), then you’ll be pleased to hear about Prism Glasses.

They’re kooky-looking eyewear that will “bend” your vision by ninety degrees so you can actually see “straight”, even when you’re lying down. With the glasses on, you can now read your favorite magazine or catch a rerun of Friends on TV without having to sit up.

The Prism Glasses are available online from Whatever Works for $24.99 (USD).

Berg Little Printer Now Available for Pre-Order

It’s very rare that I print anything out from my digital communications today. I haven’t printed an e-mail in months and the last time I did print was because my insurance company e-mailed me new cards. One of the great things about all the digital communications we have today is we can save paper and be greener. If you’re not the green sort and you prefer to have printed versions of some your digital communications the Berg Little Printer is now available for pre-order.

The small square thermal printer will be on the market within 60 days and you can pre-order it right now for $259 (USD). We talked about this device last November when it first debuted, but the launch day and pricing details were unknown at the time. The software the device runs has been tweaked to allow users to print content and feeds from Google and Foursquare and a variety of other places.

I wonder if the thermal printer paper it uses has to be special ordered or if you can just pick it up at your typical office supply store like adding machine tape. It’s a cute concept, but I think the price is quite expensive for what amounts to a networked thermal printer.

Now You Can Smoke Your Beverages Instead of Drink Them with Le Whaf

Why do people drink? Usually it’s because they’re thirsty. But sometimes, it’s just to taste whatever it is they’re drinking – and appreciating that taste. And what better way to do that than by taking whiffs of it so you’ll keep wanting more? Le Whaf has come up with a totally unusual yet awesome way to enjoy your drinks: by turning them into vapors that you’re supposed to sip through straws.

Here’s a video showing the Le Whaf and some of their awesome smokey beverages:

The people look a bit strange, drinking “smoke” and all that, but it seems like a pretty neat idea, plus it cuts down on the calories big time. Extremely novel too, although it’s a bit pricey at €129 (~$160 USD).

Woman Has Mysterious Allergic Reaction That Causes Fingernails to Grow from Hair Follicles

We’ve talked about some strange medical conditions over the years here. Most recently, we mentioned the woman who had a live spider living in her ear for several days. Another very strange medical mystery has surfaced with the case of Shanya Isom, who has been visiting doctors around the world in an attempt to figure out what is causing her severe allergic reaction. Isom is having some sort of allergic reaction that is so bizarre that it’s causing fingernails to grow from hair follicles all over her body.

fingernail face

“Black scabs were coming out of her skin,” said her mother, Kathy Gary. “The nails would grow so long and come out and regrow themselves. They are hard to touch and stick you.” The young woman is unable to walk without assistance because of the reaction. Physicians at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore where the young woman is being treated told her family that she is the only person in the world they are aware of with this condition.

The disease first surfaced when the woman was in her junior year in college studying criminal justice in 2009. The woman went to the emergency room for an asthma attack and was given a large dose of steroids. Doctors suspect that caused an allergic reaction. She had itching after returning home from getting the steroid shot, and was given Benadryl but the reaction got worse. Doctors remain baffled by the condition.

Akihabara Cafe Offers Dessert Based on Video Game Boobs

How would you feel if the dessert you’re eating was actually based on the Senran Kagura video game? More specifically, on the bouncy boobies of its titular character? (Pun intended.)

boob dessert
I’m pretty sure guys wouldn’t object. As for the girls – I’m not too sure. Anyway, these sort-of perverted desserts recently became a part of Akihabara Cafe’s Cafe Euro menu. Without the background image, the two scoops probably look like your typical dessert, but just think of Senran Kagura with that diploma wedged into her cleavage and it’ll change how you look at your ice cream.

Two variants are available: the ‘Nyuu Nyuu Gelato’ or the ‘Nyuu Nyuu Soft Cream.’

Kagura1

They’ll only be on the menu from August 10 to 19th, so you might want to give it a squeeze–er, taste before them.

Live Spider Found in Woman’s Ear: Nightmares for All of You Tonight

Well this is exactly the type of story that is going to burrow deep into my brain tonight and manifest itself in some sort of horrific, vivid nightmare. Apparently a woman living in South-Central China turned up at a hospital with a live spider living in her ear. Eeesh!

She came to the hospital complaining of an itching sensation in her ear, and when the doctor took a look, out peeped a nasty, creepy, crawly arachnid. The spider had been living in her ear for at least three days before she went to the hospital.

ear spider

While the doctor considered yanking the spider out of the woman’s ear, there was concern it would only dig in deeper and set up shelter inside her ear canal for the winter. So in a stroke of genius, the doctor poured saline solution into her ear, and the water caused the spider to float out and scurry away.

On a related note, Amazon has plenty of earplugs on sale today.
