WhatsApp update for WP8 brings in-app dialing, background agent support

DNP Whatsapp for WP8 update

A number of issues have plagued WhatsApp on Windows Phone 8, but hopefully this latest update has addressed some of them. While it’s yet to integrate a VoIP function like Viber and other competitors, the new version allows you to initiate a call through the phone’s dialer. It promises to fix notification problems as well, although you can still see a lot of complaints about push notifications on the Windows Phone Store. The latest version also adds support for Windows Phone background agents, which prevents the app from killing off music and other tasks. Let’s not forget the new emoticons, because WhatsApp sure deserves a smiley for these much-needed changes.

WhatsApp For Windows Phone Might Get Call Contact Convenience Feature

WhatsApp For Windows Phone Might Get Call Contact Convenience FeatureWhile Windows Phone might not have as many apps compared to iOS and Android, we guess they do have some of the major ones, such as WhatsApp. In any case if you’re a Windows Phone user looking to squeeze out a bit more functionality from WhatsApp, leaked screenshots have suggested that WhatsApp could be getting a call contact feature. Before you get all excited and think that this is a VOIP function, it’s not, but rather a convenient feature that allows you to call your friend without having to quit the app simply by bringing up their contact information.

Granted it’s not the most groundbreaking feature we’ve seen, but considering that Windows Phone does not really get the same amount of love and attention that they should compared to iOS and Android, every little bit of convenience and functionality will probably be a welcome update. Apart from this call contact feature, the next update for the app is expected to be a pretty significant one. No word on when it will be released, but fret not as we will be keeping our eyes peeled.

WhatsApp Could Get Push-To-Talk Functionality [Rumor]

WhatsApp Could Get Push To Talk Functionality [Rumor]WhatsApp is a popular messaging platform available for smartphones. It allows users to send videos, photos and even audio clips to one another, but could the developers behind WhatsApp be thinking about possibly adding push-to-talk capabilities in the future? According to the folks at 9to5 Mac, they claim to have received several tips so far which has suggested that the developers behind WhatsApp could be looking to add a push-to-talk feature in the app.

This was revealed via an email allegedly from the WhatsApp team to a Hong Kong developer, asking the developer to help the company translate several new strings into Chinese. The strings, according to the email, include Camera button on/off, and a push-to-talk button. Of course this email could have easily been faked, but adding push-to-talk functionality isn’t exactly groundbreaking, plus it would give users a reason to stay with WhatsApp instead of switching to push-to-talk apps such as Vox. Take this with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think of push-to-talk coming to WhatsApp? Is this a welcome feature?
