WhatsApp Processed 18 Billion Messages On New Year’s Eve

whatsapp billion WhatsApp Processed 18 Billion Messages On New Years EveRecords, as they say, are meant to be broken, and on New Year’s Eve earlier this Monday, WhatsApp claimed that they processed a whopping 18 billion messages – that would mean an average of nearly 3 messages for each person on the face of the earth. This amount is nearly double that of WhatsApp’s 10 billion message record that was set in August, and we are quite sure that as the world’s population continues to grow exponentially with more and more folks taking up smartphones as their primary mobile communications device of choice, the 18 billion mark is set to shatter not too long down the road.

Out of the 18 billion messages processed, around 7 billion messages were inbound, while 11 billion of them were outbound messages. How many messages using the WhatsApp platform did you contribute to be part of this rather historic milestone? Of course if you were to put things in perspective, Apple mentioned that in October alone, their iMessage text service delivered approximately 300 billion texts over the course of a year, averaging out to under a billion a day.

Rumor: Facebook could be interested in acquiring WhatsApp

If you see someone with a smartphone, there is a good chance that they might have WhatsApp installed. After all while the app itself might be a paid app (for iOS it requires an upfront payment), it allows users to send messages to friends and family all over the world for free, hold group conversations and exchange various media as long as an internet connection is available. Plus with a report by WhatsApp back in October of 2011 that they are serving 1 billion messages a day, it just seems like a recipe for monetization, and with Facebook having acquired Instagram not too long ago, could WhatsApp be next on their list? Whatsapp For Android A Paid Service Down The Road?

Hmmm, there are whispers going around which will definitely not go down well with folks who are currently enjoying free communication over Whatsapp – it seems that rumors are floating concerning the most famous chat application for smartphones in the world, touting that we eventually will need to pony up money to use Whatsapp in the future. Apparently, a spokesperson of Whatsapp mentioned to androidworld.nl that Whatsapp might cost a dollar to use down the road, if downloaded over Google Play.

Of course, paying for Whatsapp is not new, as iPhone users had to pony up money for the privilege of using Whatsapp all along. Assuming all Android-powered smartphone users are required to pay for Whatsapp use, Samsung is in a position to capitalize on their ChatON chat program, which comes pre-installed on select Samsung devices, while touting added functionality compared to Whatsapp. In fact, ChatON is said to be extremely popular among bada OS users and folks living in Asia. What do you think?

Research firm estimates that Whatsapp costs carriers around the world 17.7 billion Euros in 2012

All of this is technically free since you have a smartphone, chances are you have a data plan as well. Either that or you could always rely on WiFi. So, do you know anyone that you still communicate with via traditional SMS, or has everyone turned to Whatsapp?

Telkomsel’s new unlimited messaging plan gives Indonesians an alternative to BBM

Telkomsel's new unlimited messaging plans give Indonesians an alternative to BBM

As far as monopolies go, word on the interwebs is BlackBerry holds a pretty major one with its own BBM in Indonesian territory. According to DailySocial, though, that all could be changing soon thanks to Telkomsel’s newly introduced all-you-can-message plans. The deal’s fairly simple, the Indonesian carrier’s bundling applications like Opera Mini, Line, WhatsApp and KakaoTalk in an unlimited package, with pricing starting at a mere 30,000 Rp (around $3) per month. Obviously, with the inclusion of a couple of the aforementioned apps, Indonesians could — in theory — also make calls without using their precious minutes, which is quite a good deal for under four bucks. In the end, it looks like it’ll come down to how attached folks are to all those BlackBerry Messenger pins and whistles.

BiteSMS adds Quick Reply feature to WhatsApp on jailbroken iOS devices

While iOS’ new notification system certainly makes it less intrusive compared to the pop up notifications in the past, one of the features it still lacks is a quick reply function. This functionality can be had via a jailbreak tweak known as BiteSMS. Well if you’re familiar with BiteSMS, you’re in luck as the tweak has been updated and now includes a Quick Reply function for WhatsApp users. As pictured above, WhatsApp messages received will now have the option of replying directly from the notification itself, as opposed to having to launch the app, select the message and replying. If you own a jailbroken iOS device, you will be able to download the Quick Reply for WhatsApp via the BigBoss Cydia Repository. Now if only Apple will eventually include such a feature in iOS for the future!
