Before they used to be so screaming loud that they sounded like the manifestation of space laser warfare on the road. Now in 2014? It’s like hearing weak go karts prancing around the track. It’s that different.

I was blown away when I first heard about a project that tried to tap into the electromagnetic communication potential of mushrooms. Using wires, radio waves, and circuits—not psychedelics—the project’s off-kilter quest to find (and listen to) "electromagnetic fungi" was nonetheless more art than science. Rio de Janeiro, which has been getting lit up with lightning storms this week, just got hit with another one—and this one struck the city’s famous 125-foot tall Christ the Redeemer statue on top of the Corcovado mountain. A lightning bolt broke off a few fingers on his right hand.

To celebrate the New Year, Dubai decided to break the Guinness World Record for world’s largest fireworks show. Because of course the world’s largest fireworks show would be in Dubai. They put the best show on every year. Might as well put on the biggest too. Dubai exploded over 500,000 fireworks in just 6 minutes centered mostly around the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest structure, for a spectacle that even surpasses Dubai’s ridiculous standards. It was amazing.

It looks like Call of Duty. It’s not. It looks like a movie. It’s not. Instead it’s an incredible photograph of a Marine Corps Super Stallion Helicopter taking off with a M777 howitzer in the California desert. In real life. What a powerful image. The helicopter is lugging the 7,500 pound 35 foot long monster of a weapon like it’s nothing.

As far as tyrannosaurus rex replicas go, this one seems pretty cheery. Sure, it has sharp teeth and claws but they look playfully toothy. One thing scary about it though: the head and eyes seems to follow you wherever you go. Like the paper T-Rex is watching your every move. What’s scarier? It’s not actually moving. How is this possible?
