Sony STR-DN1030 AV receiver with AirPlay, WiFi and Bluetooth starts shipping

Sony STR-DN1030

Right on schedule, the AirPlay sporting, built-in WiFi and Bluetooth AV receiver we told you all about last month is officially available. The 7.2 channel, 145-watt per channel STR-DN1030 retails for $499 and is the first AV receiver to not require some sort of dongle or other accessory, to connect wirelessly to your other gadgets. That means it is all that much easier to stream music to it from your Apple AirPlay, DLNA, or Sony Entertainment Network source. All seven of the inputs on the back support HD and of course the usual assortment of audio codecs and video up conversion features you’d expect are included. Still not sure it’s right for your home theater? Maybe the additional details in the press release after the break will push you over the edge.

Canon expands its PIXMA line with MG2220, MG3220 and MG4220 allinones, adds AirPrint for the latter two

In plenty of time for back to school shopping, Canon has added three new offerings to the PIXMA family. The company just uncovered the MG2220, MG3220 and MG4220 all-in-one printers. The trio boasts 4,800 x 2,400 dpi max resolution, FastFront for easy changing of both ink and paper via the face of the machine, borderless 4 x 6-inch prints in under a minute and handles up to 8.5 x 11 sizes. With the MG2220, you can expect the advertised copy, print and scan functionality, while the other models each sport wireless capabilities. The aforementioned perk includes AirPrint, Google Cloud Print and Canon’s own Easy PhotoPrint mobile app. If that wasn’t enough, two new bits of software will be available with My Image Garden and you’ll gain access to Facebook galleries with Print Your Days.

The pricier pair also touts Auto Duplex printing to keep costs down and the MG4220 tacks on a 2.5-inch LCD for convenient adjustments for its higher price tag. The outfit didn’t offer any details on when these peripherals will hit shelves, but when the time arrives, you can expect prices of $69.99 for the MG2220, $79.99 for the MG3220 and $129.99 for the all-inclusive MG4220. Further details lie in the full PR and a look at all three models can be found in the gallery that follows.

Of course, you’ll be limited to 4 x 6-inch snapshots, but the new accessory will take up less room in your backpack compared to the previous models. Can’t find a power outlet? No worries. You can splurge for the optional battery / charger combo for printing mid-safari — should you so choose. London cabs to offer free Wi-Fi connectivity

We do know that the summer Olympics are about to kick off in London very, very soon, and if you are heading there for the celebrations, then you might be interested to know that you need not be behind on your email when you hail a taxi there – simply because Greentomatocars, the second largest minicab service in London, has announced that its fleet of 300 cars will offer free Wi-Fi connectivity to its passengers. This is definitely a milestone, as would make Greentomatocars the first taxi company in Europe to offer such a service.

How will the internet connection be made available? Well, individual SIM cards in each taxi will allow one to achieve theoretical download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps, with 2Mbps upload speeds. Granted, real life performance is definitely not going to hit such speeds, but at least it gives you a rough idea of the potential. Just use the password ilovefreewifi to access the service, and you are good to go. Checking your email might mean less talk with the cabbie though…

Tim Hortons bringing free WiFi to 90 percent of its locations by September

Tim Hortons bringing free WiFi to 90 percent of its locations by September

It’s already toyed around with offering free WiFi at a few of its locations, but Tim Hortons has now finally committed to making the service available at most of its restaurants across Canada. That’s being done through a partnership with Bell Canada, which Tim Hortons says was selected after a “rigorous six-month testing process,” and it looks like the WiFi has already been turned on at quite a few of its locations (you can search for those near you using the store locator on its website). All told, the company expects to roll the service out to more than 90 percent of its restaurants (not including gas stations, kiosks, and the like), or over 2,000 locations, by this September — a number that Tim Hortons says will make it the largest free WiFi network in Canada.

London minicab firm equips cars with free WiFi, says you don’t need no stinking LTE

London minicab firm to equip cars with free WiFi, says we don't need no stinking LTELondon may be late to the LTE party, but it’s more than making up for its laggard mobile ways by bulking up its citizens’ access to WiFi. The Tube’s been acquiring hotspots in preparation for the crush of Olympic fans expected to use public transport, and now it’s time for taxis to do the same. The Inquirer reports that Greentomatocars, a London minicab service, is now equipping every car in its fleet with free WiFi. Each cab has its own SIM that affords passengers up to 7.2Mbps downloads and 2Mbps uploads, and gaining access merely requires you profess your affection for gratis internet — the password is ilovefreewifi.
