One of this console generation’s most beloved video game franchise has to be the Batman: Arkham series as both Batman: Arkham Asylum and City were highly-praised games. The next entry into the Batman: Arkham series has just been announced and is called Batman: Arkham Origins.
Batman: Arkham Origins is expected to be released on October 25, 2013 for PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U and will be a prequel of the previously released Arkham titles. The adventure will star a “young, unrefined” Batman as he encounters a number of notable villains for the first time, including Deathstroke. (more…)
The Nintendo Wii U is the Japanese company’s latest console offering, and while it does seem to have a lot of potential, it seems that not many are enamored by the company’s efforts, going as far as saying that sales of the console are “disappointing”. However will the Wii U forever play second (or third) fiddle to the likes of the PS4 and the Xbox 720, or could this console eventually reach the same success that Nintendo achieved with handheld devices like the DS? According to Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto (via CNN), creator of popular Nintendo titles like Mario and Zelda, he says that consumers should be patient and give the Wii U time.
Miyamoto claims that having a second screen for gaming in the living room is a new experience for gamers, and that such an experience opens the door to possibilities that weren’t possible before. Miyamoto goes on to compare the Wii U to the Nintendo DS handheld console, stating that at one point in time, consumers weren’t convinced about the need for dual-screens for the device, but as we can see from the sales of the DS, consumers did indeed have a change of heart. Miyamoto states that consumers should remain patient and that the second screen will catch on to the point where gamers will rely on it and wonder what they would do without it.
While the Nintendo Wii U has some pretty fun games of its own, some developers of bigger titles have decided to forsake the Wii U in favor of other consoles, such as Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox. However according to a tweet by Jonathan Holmes of Destructoid, it would seem that Nintendo is currently giving away Wii U dev kits to certain developers to help encourage these developers to make more games for the console. As it stands, it seems that a Wii U dev kit will cost around $5,000, a hefty sum especially for smaller studios who might prefer to concentrate on a single platform and might choose to go with the PS3 or the Xbox 360.
Assuming this is true, we guess good on Nintendo for helping encouraging their developers, but at the same time we can’t help but feel that the dev kit is probably going out to smaller studios, since bigger studios can probably afford it, meaning that choosing not to develop on the Wii U is less of a budget concern and could signify something else. In any case that is just pure speculation so try not to read too much into that.
While some retailers like Gamestop are calling the sales of Wii U “disappointing”, perhaps they might be having a change of heart in the upcoming weeks. According to retail sources in the UK who spoke to MCV, it seems that the sales of Wii U consoles have shot up by an impressive 125% last week. Apparently this spike in sales was thanks to the launch of Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate, combined with retailers like HMV who cut the price of the Premium bundle by £140. Their source goes on to claim that Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate accounted for half of the revenue generated by Wii U software during the week as well.
The spike in sales thanks to Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate was preceded by LEGO City Undercover which while did not have the same impact that Monster Hunter did, helped to increase sales significantly. However in spite of this boost in sales, it seems that the Wii U is still lagging behind when it comes to other consoles from Sony and Microsoft, namely the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 respectively. We guess it also goes to show that not only does hardware play a significant role, but having major titles available for your console, preferably exclusive, will play a role in boosting sales as well. Any of our readers out there who went out to get the Wii U for Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate?
Nintendo will add a new version of its prepaid card usable at it’s online software download site, e-shop, for 3DS and Wii U. It’s a prepaid card with extra fun bonus called “Asoberu Omaketsuki Nintendo Prepaid Card” (meaning “with playable bonus” in Japanese). It will be out on April 23. The extra fun bonus makes the prepaid card literally come alive. Hold your 3DS over the card and watch one of the Super Mario characters pop out of the card (viewable …
The sales of the Nintendo Wii U have been a topic of interest for many gamers as it’s obvious the company is having some trouble getting people to pick up its “next-gen” console. With only 64,000 units sold last month, it’ll only be just a few short weeks until we hear how terribly it did in March, but GameStop’s President Tony Bartel gave us a glimpse into how exactly the console is doing in its stores.
During GameStop’s earnings call yesterday, Bartel said the Wii U had a stronger-than-expected launch as the console initially sold out across its stores. Its after-holiday sales seem to be the problem as Bartel says they’ve been “disappointing” over the last few months, but GameStop still won’t give up on the console as Bartel believes he has the reason why the Wii U has been having issues with its sales: (more…)
When Miiverse was originally considered by Nintendo, the company knew it wanted to expand the service beyond just the Wii U onto mobile devices and PC. We know Nintendo plans to roll out their update making this theory a reality this spring, and during a Miiverse panel at this week’s Game Developer’s Conference, Nintendo finally revealed some details on when we could expect it.
Nintendo’s Miiverse producer Kiyoshi Mizuki announced its app will be made available in just a few weeks to be released in either April or May on both smartphones and PC. As for the Nintendo 3DS, a version of Miiverse for Nintendo’s handheld platform is still in development, but as of now, there’s no word as to when it would be expected to be released. (more…)
Nintendo has heard its Wii U gamers loud and clear: the Wii U’s loading times are pretty slow, but the company has announced that an update for the console will be arriving next month, but they just can’t hold back their excitement for the update, so they have released a video showcasing the speed improvements of its new console.
The video shows off a side-by-comparison of two Wii U Gamepads. The one on the left is a Wii U without the new update, and the one of the right is a Wii U with the update installed. The video shows how quickly the console returns to the home screen after playing New Super Mario Bros. U. It takes about eight seconds with the updated Wii U, while the older Wii U takes over twice as long.
Of course, even with the new update applied, it’s still a bit of a wait time to get back to the home screen, but it’s certainly an improvement, and one that most Wii U gamers will be grateful to have. If you still aren’t satisfied, however, Nintendo is expected to release a second update sometime later this year to decrease loading times when launching software.
The Wii U’s sales have been rather low lately, being the lowest-selling console on the market right now, with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 leading the way with its 26th straight month of being the highest-selling console. However, Nintendo isn’t giving up on the Wii U just yet. The company said that they’re serious about the new console, and have a bunch of plans lined up in the future.
For the sake of this story, let’s pretend The Hunger Games is a TV show. M’Kay?
Amazon may not be building a $99 Kindle Fire, but it is rolling out its X-Ray for Movies feature it introduced six months ago on its Kindle Fire HD to now be able to offer the same service to its library of television shows.
The X-Ray for TV will allow Kindle Fire users to be able to access IMDb while they’re watching a TV show, giving them immediate access to everything the database has to offer to give them the information they might be looking for on that particular show or episode. The update will be available for “the most popular TV shows on Amazon,” which in layman’s terms means not every TV show will use Amazon’s X-Ray for TV. (more…)
Nintendo announced it would be releasing a system update this spring to help address some of the speed issues the system has been having. April is when Wii U owners can expect the update to be released, but just how fast will the console be after its update is released?
Nintendo released a video this morning answering that very question as they return to the Wii U Menu from a New Super Mario Bros. U game that is currently running. After the system update is installed, the Wii U will take a total of 8 seconds to load the Wii U Menu, based on the video Nintendo published. This is a huge improvement as we can see the Wii U that doesn’t have the spring update takes nearly 3x as long to load the Wii U Menu, which clocks in at around 23 seconds of an agonizing wait time.
