Wii U Receiving System Updates In Spring, Summer 2013 To Address Speed Issues

One of the biggest complaints Wii U owners had when they got their little bundles of video-game joy to their home was just how slow it was. Loading games and returning to the Wii U’s main menu would require having the patience of a saint, but Nintendo is planning on two separate updates for the Wii U this year that will hopefully help improve the system’s speed.

During today’s Nintendo Direct streaming video broadcast, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed two new system updates will be released that will address complaints Wii U owners have been voicing for the past two months. The first update will come this spring that will not only address the speed issues of loading games on the Wii U, but will also include a number of improvements as well as the return of the Virtual Console and Miiverse improvements.

The second update is expected to be released this summer and will address the lag Wii U players experience when returning to the Wii U’s main menu.

Wii U To Get Zelda Remake

windwaker zelda Wii U To Get Zelda RemakeEvery generation of the Nintendo console, whether it is a handheld or a home-based model, deserves signature titles from the House of Nintendo. I am talking about having at least one Mario platformer title, and in recent times, a kart outing by Mario and gang, with a little bit of Zelda thrown into the side for good measure. Yes sir, the latest Nintendo console, the Wii U, is still short on the Zelda side – but not for long. Word has it that the Legend of Zelda will be arriving on the Wii U, where this High Definition adventure will make creative use of the Wii U’s gamepad,

In fact, Wii U owners will also be on the receiving end of “The Wind Waker” remake, where the original was last seen on the Gamecube, although you can be sure that this remake would have been optimized for the gamepad and the Wii U. We cannot wait to get more cel-shaded graphics interpreted by the Wii U, and the open ended seafaring gameplay would definitely roll back the years for many who are interested.

Watch Nintendo’s Wii U 2013 game preview all over again

Nintendo came out strong this morning with its 2013 gaming preview for the Wii U, opening with an apology from president Satoru Iwata for the delay in new titles, and now you can watch the whole event over again. The Japanese company certainly packed in the news, even if specific details on each individual title were often in short supply. Among the meat: a new Zelda, specially written for the Wii U, as well as a Mario Kart game, and gameplay previewed from The Wonderful 101. Read on for all the details!

In addition to the new Zelda title, there’s the promise of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, expected in the fall. On the topic of classic Nintendo characters, Yoshi will make an appearance – his first central role since 1998 on the N64, in fact – in a new game by the same team that created Kirby’s Epic Yarn.

Elsewhere, the Nintendo EAD Tokyo Software Development team responsible for the Super Mario Galaxy series are putting together a 3D Mario action game. That, as well as a new Mario Kart title, will be playable at E3 2013, Nintendo promises.

game2Some titles will use more the GamePad in more unusual ways, such as Pikmin 3. That will turn the GamePad into a camera, sharing the same perspective as Pikmin, and letting players take close-up shots of landscapes and creatures within the game, and then share them in Miiverse. A new Wii Party game, due this summer, will offer head-to-head play on a single GamePad, while Wii Fit U will support Miiverse communities in an update to the console’s social features.

As for third-party titles, Nintendo and Atlus are collaborating on a game including the Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei franchises, while the team at Monolith Soft – responsible for Xenoblade for Wii – also has a new title in the pipeline.

Bayonetta 2 was also previewed, as was gameplay from The Wonderful 101, which will launch in the first half of this year alongside GAME & WARIO. Bayonetta 2 fans, as well as those keen to get the new Super Smash Bros. title, will have to wait for more details later on as to release dates.

There’s all that, plus news on the Wii U Virtual Console, the two updates expected to speed up the Wii U itself, and the incoming Miiverse smartphone app, in the video below.

Nintendo Promises More Titles For Wii U Including New Zelda, Mario Games

wiiu

Nintendo has a lot to announce this morning, including an app for its Miiverse platform, as well as some fan-favorite game titles that will be available on the Wii U platform in the coming months. By the time E3 rolls around, in mid-June, the Wii U will support two new Zelda games, as well as new Super Mario and Mario Kart titles.

Nintendo announced the Wii U back in June, offering a new level of gameplay with multiple screens (one on the TV and one on the controller) and a brand new GamePad controller complete with NFC and a gyrometer/accelerometer.

The new console elevates Wii gameplay past silly family fun and takes it to a new level, one that gaming enthusiasts can appreciate. The console launched with titles like Mass Effect 3 and Batman Arkham City, and left classic games like Super Mario Bros. U to simmer and bubble in the minds of anticipating customers.

But today the company is ensuring that its die-hard Wii fans, the ones who grew up racing on Mario Kart or capturing coins in Super Mario Bros., have a reason to upgrade to the Wii U without losing all their favorite games.

It’s unclear what exactly these games will look like, but Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has opened up a bit about the forthcoming Zelda titles.

“Our mission in developing this new Zelda game for Wii U is quite plainly to rethink the conventions of Zelda. I’m referring to things like the expectation that the player is supposed to complete dungeons in a certain order, or that you’re supposed to play by yourself. The things that we’ve come to take for granted recently.”

“We want to set aside these ‘conventions’, get back to basics and create a newborn Zelda game so that the players today can best enjoy the real essence of the franchise.”

Along with a new 3D Mario title and Mario Kart, Nintendo will also be introducing the following titles to the platform:

  • Yarn Yoshi
  • Wii Fit U Communities (with new features like the creation of Miiverse communities)
  • Pikmin 3 Photos (which lets you use the GamePad as a camera)
  • Wii Party
  • RPG Mashup: a collaboration project that features Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei franchises
  • A new game from Monolith Soft, the creators of Xenoblade

Nintendo: Zelda for Wii U coming, plus Wind Waker HD this fall

Nintendo has promised a new Zelda title, specially written for the Wii U, though eager gamers will have to wait until after the Wii U version of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker has been released. Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD is due this fall, and will see all-new graphics thanks to the extra visual grunt the Wii U puts under your TV. However, it’s the brand new Zelda game that has enthusiasts really keen.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that the new Zelda was still too early in the production process to be previewed in today’s webcast, and so there was no footage from the game. Speaking of the ethos of the title, however, there were suggestions that it would support a multiplayer mode, as well as free-form roaming around the landscape rather than necessarily completing challenges in order.

However, the chief exec was a little more talkative about The Wind Waker HD, which will see more than just a graphics update. In addition to the new visuals, Nintendo will “tune up” the game’s experience all-round, it says, as well as introduce Miiverse support.

Finally, there’ll be explicit GamePad support, allowing players to pull the title off the TV and play it solely on the Wii U’s tablet-style controller.

The new Legend of Zelda game isn’t the only classic to be resurrected for the Wii U. Nintendo also confirmed today that it would be releasing a new Yoshi game, the first in many years, for the motion-gaming console, putting the character in a 3D environment. Meanwhile, there’ll also be a new Mario Kart.

Nintendo Wii U Miiverse smartphone support incoming

During this morning’s Nintendo Direct web broadcast, the company announced a slew of new features that are coming to their newest console, the Wii U. We already know that a “Virtual Console” is on its way, as well as some speed boosts to the console to remedy game-loading times. However, the company also announced new developments coming to the Miiverse.

miiverse_smartphone

Satoru Iwata of Nintendo headed up the broadcast, and he talked about some of the cool features of Nintendo’s Miiverse, including the ability for official Mii characters to share links and videos with one another. Iwata also announced that new communities and functionalities are coming to Miiverse, including support for mobile devices.

The company also announced that verified accounts are coming to Miiverse, as well. It’s a lot like how verified accounts work on Twitter. Essentially, these are accounts reserved for public figures and developers. However, these verified accounts have special powers that are exclusive to verified accounts on Miiverse, including the ability to insert links in their Miiverse posts, as well as embedding YouTube videos.

Verified accounts will be launching in the spring, along with the Wii U’s first major console update. New features on Miiverse will also be hitting around the same time. Hopefully these updates will give the new console the boost in performance that it deserves, and let’s hope that the new features will turn it around for Nintendo.

Wii U game roadmap revealed: Wonderful 101, Yoshi, Mario Kart and more

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has apologized for the absence of Wii U games in early 2013, insisting that the team needed more time to refine the gameplay, but saying that new titles would arrive from late March. First up will be Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, on March 22, followed by LEGO City Undercover at the end of the month. However, that should start a minor rush of new games, including The Wonderful 101 and some freshly-announced titles. Update: Now with gameplay demo videos after the cut!

The Wonderful 101:

The Wonderful 101 is one of the more eagerly anticipated titles from Nintendo, and Iwata showed a brief video demo of the gameplay people can look forward to. The president will also sit down with developers for a number of interviews about the upcoming titles in-between now and their release.

Beyond that, however, there will be a new 3D Mario action game, Iwata confirmed, along with a new Mario Kart game for Wii U. They’ll both be shown off – in playable form – at E3 2013. There’ll also be a new party game, which involves various mini-titles and using the GamePad and Wiimotes in unusual ways, such as this dual-player Pong-style game:

Nintendo also revealed that there was a new Yoshi title in the works, developed by the team behind Kirby’s Epic Yarn. That will feature the underused character in a new, 3D title.

Finally, there’ll be Shin Magami Tensei meets Fire Emblem, a fighting game that Nintendo is yet to detail completely, and Xenoblade Wii U, from Monolith, who created the original Xenoblade game.
