Harmonix hiring for next-gen, real-time combat game

Well here’s something we definitely weren’t expecting to see today: Harmonix, the genius studio behind Rock Band and Guitar Hero, is apparently developing a real-time combat game for next generation consoles. A job ad on Gamasutra reveals as much, with Harmonix looking for a “Combat Designer to create real-time, single-player combat experiences for a brand new IP on next generation hardware.” In other words, it would appear that Harmonix is ready to branch out from the rhythm genre.

Even more interesting is what Harmonix had to say to Kotaku when questioned about the job ad. Though Harmonix’s John Drake didn’t get into specifics about this new game, he did confirm that Harmonix is currently working on it, and that this is just one of “multiple new IPs” the studio is working on. Drake ended his statement to Kotaku by saying that “Harmonix is making new kickass IPs, some portion of which may have some combat.”

So, Harmonix is definitely working on a new single-player IP that involves combat in some capacity, and it seems that the studio is pretty excited about it. Unfortunately, don’t expect to hear much more about this new IP anytime soon; given the fact that it’s intended for next generation consoles, we definitely won’t be getting a reveal before the next Xbox and PlayStation have been announced. That is, of course, unless this is a Wii U exclusive, in which case a reveal may not be that far off.

Speculation about reveal dates and platforms is all well and good, but to be honest, we’re just excited to see what Harmonix can do outside of the rhythm genre. The vast majority of Harmonix’s games have been related to the genre in one way or another, and while most of those games have been great, the rhythm genre can be pretty restricting. It’s clear the team at Harmonix is very talented, and as far as we’re concerned, it’s long past time that those talents be put toward something fresh and exciting.

More hints of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 for the Nintendo Wii U

Back in June, it was rumored that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 could be making its way onto the Nintendo Wii U. Given that previous Call of Duty games have been announced for the Wii, we guess Black Ops 2 for the Wii U was kind of to be expected, however with the game being announced for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and the PS Vita, it seemed odd that the Wii U was not included. While we’re not sure why the Nintendo Wii U was not included at that time, a LinkedIn resume of a Treyarch QA tester has revealed more hints that the game could be announced for the Wii U, albeit at a later date.

On his profile description, it read that the person had tested the game for “PS3 and Wii U, multiplayer testing while collaborating with team, ad hoc testing, and regression”. In any case the Nintendo Wii U has yet to be given an official release date, which is why Activision might have held back on the Black Ops 2 announcement for the Wii U just yet. Either way we’ll keep our eyes and ears peeled, so stay tuned for more updates!

Smash Bros. for Nintendo Wii U will be introducing new characters

If you’re looking forward to playing Smash Bros. on the upcoming Wii U, it seems that you can expect to get your hands on new characters, as opposed to seeing a scaled back roster list (for non-Nintendo characters) as was earlier stated. This was revealed by Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai himself who was quoted as saying, “It’s fun making new skills for new characters,” during the Computer Entertainment Developers Conference in Tokyo over the weekend. Of course the characters that will be making their way into the Wii U Smash Bros. was not revealed, but given that the upcoming game will be a joint effort with Namco Bandai, what sort of characters are you looking forward to making an appearance? Let us know in the comments below! As it stands there is also no word on when the game will be released, but given that the Wii U has yet to receive an official release date, we guess we will have no choice but to wait. However we will be keeping our eyes peeled so be sure to check back with us later for more updates.

Black Ops II reportedly in the works for Wii U

It would seem that Call of Duty: Black Ops II will be getting a release on Wii U, if the LinkedIn profile of one QA tester from Activision is to be believed. Uncovered by IGN, this profile belongs to someone named Randall (though details on the account have been changed since the discovery), and claims that he performed “QA testing on PS3 and Wii U” while working at Treyarch. His profile also said that he did multiplayer testing while working with the team, along with “ad hoc testing, and regression.”

He’s been performing those duties since May, which suggests that the Wii U version of Black Ops II has been in development since at least then. It wouldn’t be much of a surprise to hear that Black Ops II is in development for Wii U, as its predecessor appeared on the original Wii. Indeed, many Call of Duty titles have been featured on Wii too, with the most notable exception being Modern Warfare 2.

Most of those ports were pretty solid too, if not as fully-featured as their Xbox 360 and PS3 counterparts. That should all change with the Wii U though, as it won’t suffer from the same hardware limitations the original Wii did. Still, that’s assuming that Black Ops II is coming to Wii U in the first place, and even though we’ve received some pretty solid evidence that it is, neither Activision nor Nintendo have made any announcements yet.

We have a feeling that it is coming, but Activision may be waiting to announce it until Nintendo unleashes more details about the Wii U. Remember, much to dismay of players, Nintendo still hasn’t talked system specs, pricing or even given us an actual release date yet, despite the fact that we’re supposedly only a couple of months away from launch. Once that information is out there, Activision will probably announce Black Ops II. For now though, it remains confirmed only for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, and it’s hitting those platforms on November 13. Stay tuned for more details.

Nintendo Wii U rumored for a release during Black Friday

Earlier today we reported that thanks to a rumor, the Nintendo Wii U for Europe could be seeing a delay and could be launched in December. Considering that the Wii U has yet to receive an official release date and pricing, we guess it was hard to be bummed out by a rumored delay. However based on current rumors and speculation for a possible holiday release, November seems to be the favored release date for the Wii U and according to the folks at GoNintendo, a GameStop employee reportedly informed them that the Wii U is expected to see a launch during Black Friday 2012 in America, and that pre-orders for the console are expected to begin as early as next week.

The employee also revealed pricings for several Wii U games and assuming the price list is to be believed, games for the Wii U are priced starting at $49.99 and can go up to prices of $99.99. Obviously this information should be taken with a grain of salt, but what do you guys think? Could a Black Friday release see Nintendo sell more Wii U units?

Nintendo Wii U for Europe could be delayed [Rumor]

According to Nintendo, their upcoming Wii U console is expected to see a release later this year. Unfortunately details which many gamers are looking for, such as pricing and availability, remain a mystery at this point in time. Some are speculating a November release but thanks to the sources at computerandvideogames.com, it seems that Nintendo might be having some issues with the GamePad controller and that it is taking longer than expected to manufacture. That being said, it seems like for those living in the European region, the Wii U could be delayed for you guys.

Instead of seeing a speculated mid-November release, the console could be released in December. Due to the difficulties of manufacturing the GamePad controller, CVG’s sources are saying that there might be enough units for some territories, while other regions will see shipping times slip by a few weeks. However with a specific release date having yet to be announced by Nintendo, we guess it’s hard to be bummed out by a rumored delay since we don’t even know when it will ship in the first place, but if you were banking on a November release, you could be disappointed. Either way we suggest you take this with a grain of salt for now, and be sure to check back with us in the future for more updates.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: August 13, 2012

Another Monday is in the bag folks, so give yourselves a pat on the back. We’re starting things off tonight by having a look at the latest iPhone rumors. Current whispers are telling us that pre-orders for the next iPhone will become available on September 12 – the same day that Apple is expected to reveal it – and that it’ll become available at AT&T later on in the month. We also caught a glimpse of the reported logic board in the next iPhone, and it seems that this new logic board is leaving room for a larger battery and LTE capabilities.

In other news, one of Apple’s studies claims that people buy Android phones largely out of a feeling of loyalty to their carrier, and it seems that the iPhone maker licensed out patents to Microsoft while Samsung declined to bite. Fisker has made a new statement about the Karma that spontaneously caught fire in California this past weekend, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 was given a release date in the UK. RIM is looking to get rid of NewBay as it seeks fast cash while BlackBerry 10 development continues, and Samsung has announced that a new black Galaxy S III is coming soon.

Sad news for Nintendo fans living in Europe today, as Nintendo pushed the Wii U’s release date back to December. We had a couple pieces of news about Motorola today, some of it good, some of it not so much. The Motorola PHOTON Q 4G LTE is releasing on August 19, but Motorola Mobility announced today that it will be laying off 20% of its workforce. Electronic Arts is eyeing Windows Phone 8, and Amazon is looking to capitalize on the back to school frenzy by putting its tablets on clearance.

Researchers at the University of Warwick have come up with a way of making fat-free chocolate that apparently tastes like the real deal (yes, really), and President Barack Obama shared some words of encouragement with the NASA Curiosity team earlier this morning. He even promised continued support for what NASA is doing, and that is definitely a good thing. Speaking of space, it seems that the Google Earth satellites have discovered something very interesting: additional Egyptian pyramids. The ARM-based IdeaPad Yoga has been revealed as Lenovo’s Windows RT tablet, and it would seem that the LG Optimus Vu is arriving in the United States before the end of September.

The Neo Geo is getting another shot at life with the Neo Geo X Gold, the Steam Community is about to undergo a makeover, and App.net hit its crowd-funding goal with just two days left to go. That does it for the day’s news, but be sure to check out this freshly-posted review of the Lenovo IdeaCentre A720 by Chris Burns. Enjoy the rest of the evening, everyone!

Wii U launch pushed to December in Europe

Nintendo has been having a very rough time over the last several quarters as its profits fall and the company faces losses. Some of the blame for the decline in profitability for Nintendo falls on a sagging global economy. However, some of the blame certainly falls on aging hardware and the lack of new and innovative video games.

Nintendo is optimistic for its new Wii U game console, and the console’s interesting LCD equipped controller. The key for Nintendo will be to get the new console on the market in time for the holiday shopping season of 2012, which is only four months away. Sources claiming to be familiar with the inner workings at Nintendo are reporting that the Wii U launch date has been pushed back to December across Europe.

Nintendo had originally planned to launch the Wii U in November. The sources claim that the key issue delaying production of the console is a complicated Wii U Gamepad. The game pad has a 6.2-inch touchscreen display, front facing camera, motion sensing, and NFC technology inside along with its own power supply. The controller is also able to play video games on its LCD without the main console.

Nintendo maintains that the display equipped controller will be wireless. At least for now, it appears that Nintendo still intends to launch in November within the United States. The US is traditionally one of Nintendo’s largest markets, and the company wants the Wii U on store shelves in time for Black Friday.

Assassin’s Creed 3 headed for PC, with Wii U getting it as a launch title

If your primary gaming platform is a desktop machine, then you would be pleased to hear that Assassin’s Creed 3 will be arriving on the PC platform not too long after it hits the consoles, according to Ubisoft. Mark down November 23rd on your calendars, says Ubisoft, and you will be able to get yourself involved in plenty of stealthy assassination attempts while your console loving friends are three weeks ahead of you in the game already. Better late than never, no? (more…)

Nintendo confirms box art for Wii U games

At the moment apart from the design and some of the games we can expect for the Nintendo Wii U, details such as availability and pricing still remain to be seen or heard. Not too long ago we reported that thanks to Amazon, images of what appeared to be box art for Wii U games were revealed. At that time it was hard to say if they were merely mockups or the real thing, but in case you’re wondering, they are the real thing. This was confirmed by Nintendo who released a statement saying, “Nintendo has finalised the design of the Wii U game box art, and many of our publishing partners have already incorporated it into their own game packaging. We are seeing those game packages online as retailers are starting to showcase their games.” This might not really be a big deal for some, but will probably interest those who are looking forward to the console and want as much news and confirmation as possible. As it stands release date and pricing is unknown, but check back with us in the future for more updates!
