Wii U titles listed on Amazon let us see Nintendo's allnew packaging design

Although it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Nintendo would be redesigning its software packaging to accommodate the new “U,” it’s still nice to get an early peek at what we can expect from the Japanese gaming giant come “this holiday” season. As you can tell by the Avengers: Battle for Earth title above, the design only sees slight changes near the top, where it’s clearly left the white and gray accents for a more colorful blue and yellow coating — not to mention the expected addition of the Wii U branding around the center. There are other games out in the Amazon wild besides the Marvel one here, including Just Dance 4 and Assassin’s Creed 3. You can check those out at any of the source links below.

Battlefield 3 reportedly cancelled for the Wii U, “straight port” of Battlefield 4 being worked on instead [Rumor]

If you were looking forward to playing Battlefield 3 on the Nintendo Wii U, you could be out of luck. According to an anonymous source (via Wii U Daily), both EA and DICE were working on a Wii U version of Battlefield 3. However due to a “feud” with Nintendo over the integration of Origin on the Wii U, the project was then shelved. If you are a bit bummed out by that news, here’s something that might cheer you up. Is this the box art we can expect for Wii U games?

While the Nintendo Wii U might have been officially announced, there are some things that have yet to be revealed about the upcoming console. This includes price, release date and for some, what the box art for Wii U games might look like. Now this might not be a big deal for some of you guys, but for collector’s out there we sure that aesthetics do matter especially when lining up your games. Either way if you’re curious, several box art for the Wii U have been revealed. These images were apparently taken from Amazon (via NeoGAF) and appear to be pretty legit, but what do you guys think? We have to agree with the sentiments of the majority that while the blue looks pretty good, the yellow trim beneath it does seem a little out of place. Since we can’t actually confirm as to whether this is the box art for Wii U games, we suggest taking this with a grain of salt for now, but let us know what you think of it in the comments below.

Nintendo Wii U’s Biggest Challenge: Keeping Us Interested

When the Wii U launches later this year, I’ll be one of many people getting into line to get my hands on the latest console. Although I’m not so sure I’ll enjoy it over a long period and I still believe that the Wii U is coming out too soon and with lesser components than it should, I’m a gaming fanatic. And as a gaming fanatic, I can’t help but get my hands on the latest console.

I did the same with the Wii. I stood in line to finally get my chance at buying the console that so many people were after, and for some time, I was impressed by its technology. After awhile, however, I found that the motion gaming was a gimmick that I couldn’t stand for a long period of time. And with a sub-par game library at the time, I was bored within a couple of months.

Now, as I consider my next console purchase, I can’t help but think back at that time. The Wii seemed so appealing at launch, but it wasn’t long before it started collecting dust in a closet in my house. The Wii U seems to stink of the same scent, and I’m concerned that it might arrive at the same fate as its predecessor.

Although I’ll fully admit that many people out there are huge Wii fans and still enjoy playing the console ach day, I think there are a larger number of people that fell into a similar situation as me. The Wii was their favorite console for a while, but before long, it was ignored.

So, Nintendo has to do everything it can to make sure its latest console doesn’t end up the same way. And the only way to do that is to keep us interested.

“Keeping us interested isn’t as easy as it once was”

Keeping us interested isn’t as easy as it once was. Today’s gamer expects to not only have high-quality graphics and a deep library of titles, but also a host of entertainment options, robust online gaming, and a nice selection of digitally delivered legacy games. We’re more sophisticated now. And Microsoft, which was really the first company to acknowledge that, is successful today because of it.

However, Nintendo has proven to be the last in the gaming space to realize the changing landscape. The company wants us to believe that the old days are still here. They’re not. And that kind of mentality will kill the Wii U.

I think we’re all fully aware of the challenges the Wii U faces. From Nintendo’s spotty relationships with third-party publishers to the threat of the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 launching either next year or in 2014, the Wii U is facing a host of challenges. But keeping us interested over an extended period of time might just be its greatest threat.

Now more than ever, we have entertainment options available to us that will take up time and make the Wii U’s fight for our attention all the more difficult.

Given what we know now – namely that the Wii U is an iterative update over its predecessor and not a major step up – should we expect the Wii U to keep us interested over the long-term?

We can certainly hope. But I’m doubtful, to say the least.

EA Confirms FIFA 13 and Madden 13 for Wii U

I’ve been wanting to see how some of the major game developers and publishers were going to be using that LCD touchscreen on the new Wii U controller. I suspected that a lot of sports game fans would find that touchscreen on the Wii U GamePad to be pretty compelling. After all, it looks like a perfect place for a coach’s clipboard style interface.

wii u fifa

EA Sports has confirmed that its popular sports franchises Madden NFL 13 and FIFA Soccer 13 will be coming to the Wii U, and they posted an image which gives us a sense of how the controller will be used. FIFA uses the touchscreen on the controller for an overall view of where players are on the field. It also allows the user to lift the touchscreen up and look at the touchscreen to aim the ball on set pieces and penalty kicks.

EA didn’t offer up an official pic of exactly what Madden 13 would do with the touchscreen. However, they did say that using the touchscreen players will be able to streamline play calling, make pre-snap adjustments, and manage team personnel. I can see it being much easier to choose plays when you can touch them on the controller rather than having to scroll through options on a normal game controller. It’ll also let you be more secretive about the plays you’re selecting when there’s no chance the other player can figure it out from your personal screen.

Expect both games to ship this Fall when the Wii U launches.

Crytek reiterates that they are not working on Crysis 3 for the Wii U

Crysis 3Back in April, Crytek’s Rasmus Hoejengaard stated that Crysis 3 for the Wii U was not in the cards, but later gamers gained a little bit of hope when Crytek’s producer, Mike Read, stated that Crysis 3 for the Wii U was not completely out of the question and revealed that they were working with Nintendo. However whether their collaboration with Nintendo was Crysis 3 or another game entirely remains to be seen. Now it seems like the folks at Crytek are back again and this time they are confirming once again that they are not working on Crysis 3 for the Wii U. This was revealed by Crytek’s General Manager, Nick Button-Brown via Twitter. So if you were planning on getting the Wii U, it looks like Crysis 3 might not be making its way onto the console anytime soon, although we guess we can take some comfort to learn that Crytek is at least working on something with Nintendo. Either way we’ll keep our eyes peeled, so be sure to check back with us at a later date for the details!

EA Sports shows off FIFA Soccer 13 and Madden NFL 13 for Wii U

I’ll admit I’m not very interested in the thought of the Nintendo Wii U. I blame the original Wii for that because I actually waited in line to buy one of those consoles only to find it very boring after a few months of use when the novelty of motion controls wore off. The Wii now sits unused in the entertainment center while the PS3 and Xbox 360 get hours of use each month (ok each day).

I’m also not a big fan of sports games. I prefer to play video games based on things I can’t do in real life, like run from the cops or frag noobs. EA Sports has shown off FIFA Soccer 13 and Madden NFL 13 for the Wii U and the games look very interesting. As you can see in the image here, EA is showing off how exactly the games will work with that fancy LCD equipped controller the Wii U boasts.

The portion of the game on the Wii U controller reminds me a lot of the coach’s clipboard while you watch the actual soccer action on the screen. While there’s no image for Madden 13, I will assume that the LCD screen on the controller will be used in much the same way. I can definitely see fans of sports video games opting for Madden 13 on the Wii U to get that secondary LCD screen.

EA Sports says that on FIFA 13, the player can use the GamePad touchscreen in the ball on set pieces in penalty kicks. In Madden 13, the touchscreen allows players to streamline play calling, make pre-snap adjustments, and manage team personnel. Would these touchscreen features make you more likely to buy sports games on the Wii U rather than another game console?

Mass Effect 3 Leviathan, Firefight DLC and Wii U details from Bioware

Bioware provided further information today on some of the upcoming features and content that Nintendo Wii U owners can look forward to when they purchase a copy of Mass Effect 3. The image that you see above is an official screenshot depicting some Mass Effect 3 action on the Wii U’s GamePad, with a TV in the background. It looks delicious from what we can see, although there is scant little detail on just what the Wii U’s additional controls will deliver. Obviously, the Wii U GamePad will function as some sort of overhead map, and you might want to think about upping the reflexes ante as Bioware also mentioned that there will be a brand new control scheme for the Wii U port.

Not only that, BioWare did say that the Wii U version of Mass Effect 3 will come with the Extended Cut DLC in the original package in addition to other bonus DLC – but will the newly announced Leviathan DLC be part of the group?

As for the Firefight Weapons Pack, this Single Player Weapon Pack will be made available for download when August 7th rolls around, and you can enjoy it on the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 platforms. Expect to see this $2 purchase deliver a pair of powerful new weapons and five bonus weapons for you to help save the earth.

BioWare details Leviathan and Firefight Mass Effect 3 DLC

Mass Effect 3‘s multiplayer is definitely a fun way to pass the time, but if you’re like me, you bought Mass Effect 3 for the single player story. Disappointingly, single player DLC has been hard to come by with Mass Effect 3, while BioWare seems to release multiplayer DLC every other week. That’s all about to change with BioWare’s upcoming Leviathan and Firefight DLC, and today the studio dropped some details on both in a post on the BioWare blog.

Leviathan is a story-driven piece of DLC that takes place during the events of Mass Effect 3 proper. In it, players will be tasked with finding Leviathan (which appears to be a Reaper) and using it in the battle for the galaxy. As you attempt to find Leviathan, you’ll learn more about the “dark history” of the Reapers, and we’ll even be getting a glimpse at their origins. In addition to the new story content, Leviathan also unlocks new areas of the Citadel to explore, adds a couple new weapons, and will introduce us to some new characters. BioWare says it will be available later this summer for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 and will cost $10 or 800 MSP.

Firefight is the less substantial of the two, as this one is merely a weapons pack. Adding seven weapons in all, the pack comes with two weapons that are designated as “powerful” with the other five being called “bonus weapons.” This one will be available quite a bit sooner than Leviathan, arriving on PS3, PC, and Xbox 360 on August 7 with a price tag of $2 or 160 MSP.

BioWare also took the opportunity to announce that Mass Effect 3 will be a Wii U launch title. Of course, we still don’t know when the Wii U is launching, but day-one purchasers can rest assured that Mass Effect 3 will be there right alongside it whenever it arrives. Other than that, there wasn’t too much news about the Wii U version, except that it will sport new controls (obviously) and it will come with bonus DLC, including the Extended Cut. Now if Nintendo would just give us that Wii U release date, we’d be set!

Wii U price point may not be revealed until September

We’re all still anxiously awaiting the announcement of what Nintendo will charge consumers for its upcoming Wii successor. And it’s not time to start holding our breath just yer. According to the latest analyst putting his neck on the line to make a prediction about the console, we might not get an official price point until September. Good news or bad news?

It’s very uncommon for those critical details to be withheld so close to the launch of a new platform, and Nintendo has nothing to gain by not announcing the price point unless it knows it will draw some sort of backlash. EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich said, “It is tough to pinpoint any type of expectation when Nintendo themselves are being incredibly vague about it. Considering the potential for PS3/Xbox 360 price cuts this holiday, it is understandable that they are keeping their cards close to the chest.”

He said he expects an official announcement in September, around the time of the big Japanese trade show, the Tokyo Game Show. Estimates of what the Wii U will cost have ranged anywhere from $300 to $500. Regardless of where it is in that wide range, if it is more than $250 it will be the most expensive Nintendo console ever.
