Warner, Redbox agree to 28 day delay on disc rentals, UltraViolet support for Redbox Instant

Warner, Redbox agree to 28 day delay on disc rentals, UltraViolet support for Redbox Instant

Redbox and Warner Bros. were at odds in January when Warner wanted to extend the window before discs hit kiosks to 56 days, but now the two have come to an agreement that keeps it at a 28 day delay. When their previous deal expired Redbox said it would find other ways to obtain discs and offer them day and date to its customers, although actually finding them in kiosks could be tough. The new two-year deal covers movies that debut after January 1st, 2013, and claims to improve economics for both Warner (which has apparently seen fit to eliminate the delay entirely for brick & mortar renters) and Redbox. Additionally, Redbox has joined with the DECE team and will support UltraViolet with its upcoming Redbox Instant service. With the new deal, it can offer UltraViolet digital access to Warner movies, and distribute movies through its subscription service. We’ll have to wait for Redbox Instant to launch to know more information about that, for now check out the details in the press release after the break.

Superhero Window Washers Surprise Sick Kids With Cleaner Windows

We can’t all be like the superheroes we love to watch in those movies, but once in a while, a couple of human beings rise up to the occasion to become real-life superheroes – but of a different kind.

Ladies and gents, I present to you the superheroes from commercial window cleaning company American National Skyline.

Spider Man Window Washers

On October 17th, a couple of window washers suited up (some in Spider-Man garb, while one donned a Captain America costume) and rappelled down the windows of the Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis.

Spider Man Window Washers2

The employees wanted to do something nice for the kids, and what better way to lift their spirits than by letting them ‘meet’ face-to-face with the superheroes they’ve seen in movies and read about in comic books?

Kind hearts and genuine intentions. Now those are two things these superheroes have.

Samsung promises “groundbreaking” Windows 8 device reveal on October 15th

The folks at Samsung have sent out invites to a press event in which they’ll be revealing a set of new Windows 8-toting devices, not least of all notebooks with ultra-thin bodies and touchscreen displays. This event is set to take place at a museum, of all places, with “Framing the Future” as their key catchphrase. Here we’ll be seeing Samsung go all-in for Microsoft’s next-generation operating system, you can bet!

This event will certainly be home to a selection of never-before-seen devices that work with Windows 8 and perhaps give new glimpses of how they’ll be working with Windows Phone 8 as well. With the couple of images included in the invite you see above, we’re thinking thinness is on the table without a doubt – this is more than likely the location and time of the final Samsung Series 9 notebook reveal. The gray and blue colorscape presented here makes us feel as though we’re also already in a museum before we arrive.

What we’re also expecting is an even more refined presentation than Samsung has been presenting as of late. As the brand grows stronger, so too do they continue to present in a simpler way – here in a location we’re sure will play up their devices as fine art. Or fine design, as it were, with unibody casing, all-metal bodies, sharp lines, all that good stuff.

This is also just one of many Windows 8 – aimed events that will be popping up here on SlashGear over the next few weeks and months. Stay tuned to our Windows 8 tag hub to see all the operating system has to offer! Also be sure to keep your note tuned to the Samsung tag for all the new notebooks and PCs they’ve got up for grabs, too!

Winscape virtual window makes the leap to Kinect in 4K-capable, 6-screen glory (video)

Winscape virtual window leaps to Kinect, jumps to 4K footage and 6 screens video

RationalCraft brought its surreal Winscape virtual window to market when the Wii was virtually the only game in town for affordable motion tracking. Microsoft’s Kinect has certainly changed the rules of the game since then, so it’s almost natural that a fourth-generation Winscape has just launched to make use of the much more sophisticated sensor. For a start, there’s no need to dress like Flavor Flav anymore: the camera can recognize anyone, even passers-by, without an oversized necklace. The larger-than-life footage used to generate the window effect has been given its own bump, too, and the app can now handle 4K video as long as the Mac underneath (sorry, Windows folks) is powerful enough to drive it. For those who truly want to be disconnected from reality, there’s even six-display support provided it’s all hooked up to a Mac Pro and a pair of three-output Radeon HD 5770 video cards. RationalCraft’s software is free to try out now, although the requirement for at least two big TVs, a Kinect controller and a fast Mac should say all there is to know about the practical cost of pretending the Golden Gate Bridge is visible from inside a living room in Cleveland.

Techno-windows keeps you happier with blue light

Lighting does play quite the important role in making sure that your mode remains on the up and up throughout the day, and this particular concept was not lost on the makers of this special kind of glass that lets through blue light to flood the rooms in your home. The whole premise of having blue lights would be this – it has its job cut out as it will govern biorhythms that in turn, informs you on just when you ought to hit the sack and get some shuteye.

This new kind of glass could eventually result in happier and healthier houses, or so that is what German scientists claimed. Known as ‘Uniglas Vital’, this new kind of glass was specially designed in order to let blue light through thanks to a special coating, resulting in a similar feeling as that of an open window. Obviously, you will not be able to enjoy the kind of breezes that accompany an open window…

There is still no word on a sticker price tag or a release date, but we do hope to keep our eyes peeled on any developments down the road.
