ZTE teases Windows Phone 8 handset in very blurry photo

A lot of manufacturers are excited to get in on the Windows Phone 8 action, and it seems that ZTE has decided it wants a slice of that pie. The company is teasing a new Windows Phone 8 handset through some rather unconventional means, with ZTE marketing strategy manager Dennis Lui sharing a very blurry image of three different devices on his Sina Wiebo account (as reported by Winp.cn). Have a look at the picture below.

The device on the right is the only one that see clearly (or at least semi-clearly in this case), and it’s easy to see why: it looks an awful lot like a ZTE Tania, and even though it appears to be running Windows Phone 8, in reality it’s probably running the Windows Phone 8 simulator app that’s available on the Marketplace. The other phones are a little harder to place thanks to the liberal use of blurring, but the one on the left could be legitimately running Windows Phone 8, with the one in the middle running some version of Windows Phone 7.

This suggests that not only does ZTE have a Windows Phone 8 device in the works, but that it will also continue to offer Windows Phone 7.x handsets – the device in the image is presumably a Windows Phone 7.8 device – after the launch of WP8. Things get even more interesting though, as Lui also shared an image of a tablet running Windows RT or Windows 8, so it looks like ZTE has a lot in store for the future.

ZTE traditionally makes budget devices, and with many of the big companies eager to show us their snazzy new Windows 8 tablets, laptops, and smartphones, ZTE may be able to squeeze in there and bring Windows Phone 8 and Windows RT to the budget-minded consumer. ZTE obviously sees an opportunity there, and this strange marketing strategy sure has garnered some attention. Stay tuned for more details, as it probably won’t be much longer before ZTE clarifies a few things (pun was definitely intended there).

Asus Windows 8 Tablets to Start at $600? [Rumors]

Steve Ballmer has already suggested that Microsoft’s Surface won’t be trying to compete on price, but rumors suggest that Asus’s tablets likely won’t come cheap either. ZDNet is reporting that the devices will start at $600. More »

ASUS Windows 8 tablet pricing revealed in leaked holiday roadmap

With all of this exciting talk about incoming Windows 8 tablets, it’s easy for a detail or two to get lost in the crowd. Once such detail that has been generally missing from announcements and previews is pricing. We’ve seen what these new tablets can do, but it seems that most manufacturers aren’t ready to talk about pricing just yet.

The prices for three incoming ASUS Windows 8 tablets have been leaked today, as part of the company’s holiday roadmap. As you can see from the image above, which was secured by the folks at ZDNet, the prices are pretty high, with the ASUS Vivo Tab RT coming in at $599. Its big brother, which is running Windows 8 instead of Windows RT, will set you back $799, and if you want the dock for either tablet, you’ll have to shell out an additional $199.

The ASUS Taichi convertible tablet is going to cost you even more, as that has been stuck with a price tag of $1,299. ZDNet says that the roadmap also details a number of other machines that aren’t pictured in the image above, including a laptop that is priced at $549 and the next generation Transformer, which comes in at a whopping $1,399. Keep in mind that these prices may change by the time these machines actually hit shelves, but if these are the prices ASUS has decided on, then it’s going to have some difficulties finding an audience.

That’s especially true when there are other tablets out there available for much less. Why ASUS is pricing these tablets so high when it got the price of the Nexus 7 so right is entirely beyond us (though, to be fair, that may have been more Google’s doing), and we doubt that people are going to be jumping up and down for these products after seeing their prices. Still, as is usually the case, we can’t say for sure until it’s been confirmed, so maybe these products will launch with price tags that are a little easier to swallow. Stay tuned.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: September 17, 2012

Welcome to Monday evening, folks. Today, we entered the final few days before the iPhone 5 releases, and we found out that the device has netted 2 million pre-orders in its first 24 hours of availability. Some of those same pre-orders began shipping out from China over the weekend, and AT&T is claiming that the iPhone 5 is the most successful iPhone launch ever, which everyone could have probably already guessed. We take a look at the iPhone 5′s already astounding success, while Samsung was busy comparing the iPhone 5 to the Galaxy S III in a new ad that was rolled out over the weekend.

The HTC One X was spotted in a leaked photo earlier today, and it would appear that many of the world’s online retailers are having some trouble keeping Wii U pre-orders in stock. Google Plus has grown to 400 million users total, with 100 million of those people using the social networking service actively. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer thinks that Windows 8 may prove to be as big as Windowws 95 (and talks very briefly about the “sweet spot” for Surface pricing), while we’re hoping that Microsoft’s Windows 8 event on October 25 will give us some more solid details on the price of Surface.

The Kindle Fire HD 7-inch tablet was the subject of a teardown earlier today, showing us just what exactly is under the hood. Speaking of the Kindle Fire, today Nokia confirmed that it has licensed its Location Platform to Amazon for use in the Fire line up, meaning that Amazon will be giving Google Maps the boot. JetBlue says it will soon be offering free Wi-Fi during its flights, and HP CEO Meg Whitman has looked to Apple for inspiration when it comes to redesigning the PCs and laptops it offers. Dragon Age III: Inquisition was officially announced today too, something we’re sure will get the anti-BioWare crowd all riled up.

The Angry Birds spin-off Bad Piggies was given its first gameplay video today (no it isn’t the same as Angry Birds), and today we got word that the Samsung Galaxy S IV may be launching as early as March 2013 – less than a year after the S III hit shelves. The Nokia Lumia 820 has been outfitted with a new bumper shell, and in one of the day’s more interesting stories, archaeologists may have uncovered a fort that was critical to Caesar’s conquest of Gaul. Canon revealed a number of new cameras today, but perhaps the most important reveal was of the Canon EOS 6D. Not to be outdone, Olympus had a couple of reveals as well, announcing the new Stylus XZ-2 iHS and the M.Zuiko Digital ED 60MM F2.8 “Nature Macro Lens.”

Finally tonight, we invite you to check out new review of the Sony Reader PRS-T2. That does it for Monday’s Evening Wrap-Up, so go out and enjoy the rest of your night!

Purported ASUS holiday roadmap pegs Windows 8 tablets at $599 and above

Purported ASUS holiday roadmap pegs Windows 8 tablets at $599 and above

Windows 8 tablets have had their specs bandied about for months, but their prices have continued to remain off the radar. Now, however, a purported ASUS holiday roadmap sent to ZDNet may give us a glimpse as to how badly bank accounts could be affected this fall. According to the slide, the ASUS Vivo Tab will carry a $799 price tag and its Windows RT counterpart will come in at $599, which matches the previously reported price difference between slates running Redmond’s latest OS with Intel and AMD processors. The ASUS Taichi dual-screen notebook / tablet hybrid is said to ring up at a heftier $1,299. As for the firm’s Transformer Book, it will supposedly set purchasers back $1,399. If these prices are any indication of what we can expect from other OEMs, Microsoft’s Surface might be pricier than hoped.

Ballmer: Windows 8 launch could be bigger than Windows 95

There’s no doubt that the last few months of 2012 are going to be pretty big for Microsoft thanks to the incoming launch of Windows 8, but now CEO Steve Ballmer says that the launch of the new OS could be bigger than most of us are expecting. Speaking in a recent interview with The Seattle Times, Ballmer elaborated on his recent comments that 2012 would be the most “epic” year in Microsoft’s history, saying that the launch of Windows 8 could eclipse that of Windows 95.

For those who don’t remember the launch of Windows 95 all too well (or weren’t even around, which is strange thought): it was big. Windows 95 was everywhere when it launched, and it did a lot to make Windows a household name – not easy for a computer operating system in the early-to-mid ’90s. Now Ballmer hopes that the launch of Windows 8 can top the historic launch of Windows 95. “You know, Windows 95 was certainly the biggest thing in the last 20 years until now,” he said. “I think Windows 8 certainly surpasses it. It’s a little hard to compare things like the founding (of the company) and the introduction of the first popular PC and the system that popularized it, but it’s at that scale.”

Indeed, we’re seeing Windows 8 make a lot of changes to the classic Windows formula, perhaps most importantly boasting a touch-friendly design. Can it top the obsession of Windows 95? That’s a pretty lofty goal for Microsoft, and it’s going to be hard to pull off. With so many manufacturers going all-in with Windows 8, however, and the fact that Windows 8 signals a departure from Windows installments of the past, it just might.

Ballmer also talked a little bit about the pricing for Surface in his interview with The Seattle Times, saying that the “sweet spot” for pricing will probably range from $300 to $700 or $800. That’s a pretty broad range, to be sure, and it suggests that Microsoft may not be all that interested in having Surface compete with less expensive 7-inch tablets like the Nexus 7 or the Kindle Fire HD 7. We’re still waiting for solid pricing details though, so Ballmer’s estimate could change by the time Surface actually arrives. Stay tuned.

Asus Windows 8 Roadmap Leak: $600-$1300 for Windows 8 Tablets

Asus’ holiday roadmap was recently leaked to ZDnet, and we got our first insight to Windows 8 tablet pricing. They seem… a bit pricey. Asus is coming out with at least three Windows 8 tablets for the 2012 holidays. They’ve got the Vivo Tab RT, the low-end option with a 10.1” screen, that starts at $599. Adding a keyboard brings the total up to $798. There’s an 11.6” Vivo Tab starting at $800, which is interesting. (more…)

New Acer Chromebooks coming in October?

This is last year’s Chromebook. We wonder how the new one will look like

Last year’s Chromebook launch may have failed to set the laptop world on fire, but at least one manufacturer is coming out with new models. DigiTimes is reporting that Acer is prepping a second-generation laptop that runs on Google’s browser-based operating system to be released in mid-October. The sources that tipped DigiTimes speculate that the decision is a bit of a passive-aggressive response to Microsoft, whose Windows 8-based Surface is coming out around the same time. Acer is also hoping that Chromebooks can bolster their declining netbook business.

Last year’s Acer Cromia came with a dual-core 1.66GHz Atom processor, an 11.6-inch display, 2GB of RAM, a 16GB SSD, and a front 1.3-megapixel webcam. You can expect this year’s model to feature a better processor, and possibly more storage space. Acer is hoping to sell up to 200,000 Chromebooks a month, which seems like a lot, but keep in mind that’s how many iPhone 5 pre-orders sold in two hours.

Windows 8 event on Oct 25, Microsoft rolls out invitations

Microsoft’s next big release is just around the corner. The company has been working on its upcoming OS ‘Windows 8′ for some time and had earlier announced that the OS will finally be released during the month of October this year. Eventually, it also specified that on Oct 26th, Windows 8 will become commercially available.

Now, the company has rolled out official invitations to a Windows 8 event on Oct 25th. The event is at New York City yet what’s intriguing is that the invite doesn’t contain exact venue or time for the event.  (more…)
