Dell XPS 10 Windows RT tablet revealed with 20hr battery

Dell has joined the Windows RT tablet crowd, with the new Dell XPS 10 making its official debut at IFA today. A 10-inch slimline slate that – as we saw from Samsung yesterday – comes with a removable keyboard dock, the biggest selling point for the XPS 10 is likely to be its impressive battery claims: Dell says it’ll run for 20hrs on a single charge.

That’s 20hrs without full Windows apps, of course, since Windows RT runs only a smaller subset of specially created software for the ARM-based platform. Dell’s chipset partner in this case is Qualcomm, though the company won’t say exactly which of the silicon specialist’s Snapdragons is found inside.

Up front is an HD touchscreen, while Dell has squeezed both microUSB and microSD connections into the 10mm thick slate. We’re guessing on Bluetooth and WiFi inside, and hoping that Dell does road warriors a service by including integrated 3G/4G options.

Pricing is yet to be announced, and in fact Dell is keeping most details on the XPS 10 close to its proverbial chest. We’ve got more live shots coming up very soon.

Dell XPS Duo 12 ultrabook packs swiveling touchscreen

Dell has resurrected the Inspiron Duo in the shape of the XPS Duo 12 ultrabook, a 12-inch touchscreen notebook with a swiveling display for both traditional laptop and convenient tablet use. Revealed at IFA today, the Duo 12 has a full HD touchscreen and bypasses the chunky plastics of the Inspiron Duo in favor of slick and compact metals.

That has the benefit of slimming down the bezel, and where the original Duo had a clunky, thick screen surround – leaving the screen itself looking small in the middle – the XPS Duo 12 could be mistaken for a regular ultrabook. The base section is similarly slim, and of course since the notebook runs Windows 8 you can use all of the normal Windows apps either in notebook or tablet mode.

Dell isn’t talking specific specifications yet, which could be a deal breaker. The original Duo was woefully underpowered with a dual-core Atom processor, though it’s fair to say that Intel has upped its mobile processor game in the intervening time.

We’ll have hands-on with the new XPS Duo 12 very soon, so keep an eye on our IFA Hub for all the details.

Dell announces XPS One 27 AIO running W8 on a touch display

Dell announces XPS One 27 AIO running W8 on a touch display

Dell has a re-announcement of sorts. It just unveiled its XPS One 27 running Windows 8 on a 10-point touch display. The screen boasts a Quad HD (2560 x 1440) resolution, and the machine sports an adjustable stand that lets you flip the AIO up to a flat “desktop mode” a la Microsoft’s Surface.

Dell announces XPS 10 Windows 8 hybrid, XPS 12 Duo convertible

Dell announces XPS 10 Windows 8 hybrid, XPS 12 Duo convertible

Our next stop on the Windows 8 announcement train is Dell, which today unveiled the XPS 10, a Windows RT hybrid device that runs Microsoft’s latest OS on a 10-inch touch-enabled display. Dell says you can expect up to 20 hours of battery life, though the company didn’t touch on CPU and storage specs.

Dell also unveiled the XPS Duo 12, which sports a 12.5-inch touch display. When closed, it looks like any old XPS laptop, with a machined aluminum built and carbon fiber surrounding the display. To enter tablet mode, you literally flip the Duo 12’s display around and close it over the keyboard. Processor options will go up to Core i7, and the keyboard includes backlighting. Both products will be available later this year after the official Windows 8 launch.

Dell XPS One 27 gets Windows 8 and multitouch

Dell has launched its latest XPS all-in-one desktop, refreshing the XPS One 27 and including a touchscreen for navigating Windows 8. Targeted both at domestic and business users, the One 27 runs at Quad HD 2560 x 1440 resolution with 3.7m pixels, and – with Dell disagreeing strongly with Apple’s hands-on approach for AIOs – allows you to page through Windows without using a keyboard or mouse.

Supporting the discrete grey casing there’s a multi-adjusting desk stand that can be pushed back for regular sitting work, or then pulled up higher so that those standing can use it more comfortably. Dell actually launched the XPS One 27 back in May originally, but the touchscreen interface makes much more sense now that it runs Windows 8.

Inside there’s a choice of Core i5 or i7 processors, along with optional NVIDIA discrete graphics to augment the standard Intel HD 4000 GPU. There’s up to 16GB of RAM, up to 2TB of storage, and an optional mSATA flash drive for speedier app loading. Connectivity includes both HDMI input and output, together with gigabit ethernet, Bluetooth 4.0 and USB 3.0.

No word on pricing at this stage, though we’re guessing the updated XPS One 27 will start at around the $1,399 point just as its Windows 7 predecessor did.

HP Spectre XT TouchSmart Ultrabook with IPS display

The Spectre series is undoubtedly the high-powered group of computers in HP’s line of personal laptops. The HP Spectre XT TouchSmart is the latest model designed for the upcoming Windows 8 OS. As its name indicates, the display (15″) is a touch screen with which users can perform the various gestures that Windows 8 now supports.

The first thing that popped right away is the display. It is a beautiful 15.6″, 1080p IPS display. We were able to see from a distance that it uses the IPS technology because both the colors and the view angles were quite extraordinary. (more…)

HP Envy X2 PC/tablet “transformer”, hands-on

HP is coming out with the HP Envy X2, a 11.6″ (1366×768) touch-screen slate PC that can be converted into a clamshell laptop with a simple “snap” into a keyboard dock. This is a concept that has been popularized by the ASUS Transformer Pad which combines the elegance of a tablet to the productivity of an ultra-light laptop.

We’ve played with it, and the first thing that we noticed was the rather amazing build quality and solid feel of this product. The Envy X2 is mostly made of aluminum, and both the tablet and the keyboard feel extremely rigid – almost like a solid bloc of aluminum. The connector is pretty easy to snap in place (one-handed operation), and feels very robust as well. Users can grab the screen and lift the dock+tablet combo without any problems. (more…)
