Samsung introduces ATIV Tab: a 10.1-inch Windows RT tablet

Samsung introduces ATIV Tab a 101inch Windows RT tablet

Samsung’s busy cranking out its fall lineup here in Berlin, and among the new entries is the ATIV Tab, a Windows RT-packing cousin of the Galaxy Note 10.1. The new 10.1-inch slate isn’t quite as aggressive as its Android counterpart and centers on a 1,366 x 768 display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, a 5MP rear camera paired with a 1.9MP front-facing cam, and ports for micro-HDMI as well as USB. Dimensionally, the tablet is as light and skinny as you’d hope: it weighs 20.1 ounces (570g) and measures a slim 8.9mm thick. The 32GB and 64GB storage options aren’t shockers given the extra space Windows and the bundled copy of Office 2013 Home and Student 2013 will demand, but there’s a treat for long-haul users in the battery — it’s been upgraded from the 7,000maH pack of the Note 10.1 to an ample 8,200mAh unit. Samsung hasn’t handed out launch details, but it’s safe to say that the ATIV Tab won’t arrive any sooner than October 26th.

Toshiba Satellite U925t Ultrabook goes slide-out Windows 8

The folks at Toshiba have revealed the U925t Ultrabook complete with a slide-out screen and Windows 8 ready for action at IFA 2012. This device works with Windows 8 complete with touchscreen excellence under a pant of Gorilla Glass. This device will be appearing for just a bit more than $1000 USD sometime near the end of October – more than likely the 26th of the month, for reasons you might already know.

This setup weighs in at just over three pounds and is just about 0.8 inches thick. You’ll have a backlit keyboard as well as an extremely quiet overall set of hardware bits – you wont be hearing too much clacking here. There’s a camera on the back of this device with unspecified quality tied to a single bulb LED flash and up front there’s another shooter made specifically for video chat.

This machine has two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI out, a headphone jack, physical volume rocket, display rotation lock, and a beast of a processor inside. Toshiba packs a 3rd gen Intel Core i5 processor with Intel HD 4000 graphics paired with a 128GB SSD. You’ve also got Intel’s Wireless Display technology ready to rock and Toshiba has added Desktop Assist for those of you out there not entirely confident enough to just jump in headfirst with Windows 8.

This machine’s display is 12.5-inches diagonally and makes use of such lovely Toshiba apps like Toshiba Central, Book Place, and Toshiba App Place – each of these also working as a Live Tile in Windows 8′s touch-loving launcher.

Epic and NVIDIA announce Unreal Engine 3 for Windows 8 and Windows RT

Epic and NVIDIA announced at IFA today that they’ve teamed up to bring Unreal Engine 3 to Windows 8 and Windows RT. The announcement was made during the ASUS Vivo Tab RT press conference earlier this morning, and we were given a demo of Unreal Engine 3 running on the device, which comes complete with a Tegra 3 processor. Needless to say, it looks pretty good.

The demo, dubbed “Epic Citadel,” doesn’t show too much – just a fly-through of a medieval-looking town – but the graphics do look awfully nice. Our host says that the demo is running at 35 to 40 frames per second, and also points out that what’s running on the ASUS Vivo Tab RT is the “full PC implementation” of Unreal Engine 3. This means that developers who use Unreal Engine 3 on other platforms will have an easier time porting their games to Windows RT or Windows 8, so it may not be long before some high-profile ports are announced.

Indeed, there are already plenty of great games that are built on Unreal Engine 3 – the Mass Effect series and Rocksteady’s Batman series being just two examples. The possibilities for gaming on Windows RT just got a whole lot more exciting with Unreal support announced, and the visuals that we see in the demo by NVIDIA are pretty impressive for a tablet. Have a look at it below.

There haven’t been any Windows RT games announced with Unreal support yet, but you can bet that they’re coming, as Epic says that Windows RT code is available now for Unreal developers. The Epic Citadel demo is certainly impressive, but we’ll have to wait and see how much support Windows RT garners from current Unreal devs. Stay tuned.

Samsung Series 5 ULTRA refreshed with touch for Windows 8

With Windows 8 on the horizon it’s time for IFA 2012 to bring the touchscreen wave, with Samsung bringing on a brand new version of their popular Series 5 ULTRA laptop. This machine is ready to bring on its 13-inch display of power with 1366×768 pixel resolution plus Samsung’s SuperBright Technology for a massive 300nits of brightness. This device also of course has 10-finger touchscreen capability now for the touch-friendly future of Windows software.

This refresh of the Series 5 ULTRA laptop brings either a 3rd Generation Intel Core i3 or i5 processor to your home with 4GB of RAM as well as a 500GB hard drive. This machine also includes 24GB of ExpressCache which brings you a faster boot-up and start for your most frequently used software. Other than that, this device is mostly the same fabulous device already on the market – you’ll have to pick up the new model though to get the full touch experience.

The MSRP for the new Series 5 ULTRA will be ranging between $799-$849 USD and wht machine will be available beginning on October 26th, 2012. Again, the two models of this new beast differ only in their processor power. You’ll get either an Intel Core i5-3317U or an Intel Core i3-3217U depending on what you want to pay.

Samsung Series 5 and 7 Slate PCs bring Windows 8 goodness

This week the folks at Samsung have revealed two new convertable slates with the ability to connect to a keyboard dock and run full touch-capable Windows 8. Both the Series 5 and Series 7 Slate PCs will be bringing a 10-point touch experience to your Windows 8 world with no less than their full Samsung set of features. In addition to being able to use the devices’ touchscreens and keyboards to control what’s on the display, you’ve got a Samsung S Pen to work with as well!

Both Series 5 and Series 6 slates work with the S Pen for 1,024 levels of sensitivity to bring on the best in the Samsung touch universe. This same technology is used in the Galaxy Note lineup also set to expand more than likely later today. These slates come with a set of preloaded Samsung apps such as the Samsung MediaHub as well to make sure you’ve got cross-device usage of all your Samsung-purchased media.

The Series 5 and Series 7 tablets come with 11.6-inch displays. The Series 7 display is 1920×1080 pixel resolution while the Series 5 has a 1366 x 768 resolution. The difference between these two devices besides the resolution across the same amount of screen real-estate is the thickness – with the 7 being 0.5-inch thick and the 5 being 0.38-inch. The Series 5 slate also has 2GB of memory with a 64GB hard drive while the 7 has 4GB of memory with a 128 GB hard drive.

The Series 7 slate comes with an Intel Atom Processor Z2760 while the Series 5 slate has an Intel® Core i5-3317U Processor, making the difference here relative to the amount of hardcore work you want to do. The Series 5 slate will be $749 with keyboard dock or $649 without keyboard dock while just one price exists for the Series 7 slate: $1199. Both models are set to pop up soon!

Samsung Series 5 Ultra laptop, hands-on

Samsung’s Series 5 Ultra is the first generation of Samsung laptop to get an integrated 13.3″ touch screen optimized for Windows 8. The design language and overall build quality of this Series 5 Ultra reminds us of the 15″ Series 9. The body is made of aluminum, and the design is slick and very rigid. It’s not as thin as the Series 9, but it is in a different price range as well: $799 to $849. (more…)

Samsung Series 5 and Series 7 Slate PCs, hands-on!

Ahead of Windows 8′s arrival on October 26, Samsung is launching a couple of Slate PCs with their Series 5 and Series 7 naming. Both slates have been designed to turn from laptop to tablet, thanks to their detachable display and QWERTY dock. In the Android world, this would be something like the Asus Transformer Series. These two tablets are powered by an Intel processor, so they run the desktop version of Windows 8.

Because of that, these tablets can truly run any Windows program, past or future, and that should be most important to those who have legacy or enterprise applications that they can’t live without. There is definitely a market for that. (more…)

Samsung Series 5 Ultra Touch Ultrabook arrives October 26th, starting at $799

Samsung Series 5 Ultra Touch Ultrabook arrives October 26th, starting at $799

Remember that touchscreen Series 5 Ultrabook that Samsung showed off at Computex last June? Well, it’s definitely coming to the US and will be available October 26th, the same day Windows 8 formally launches. As we noted in our hands-on, this is basically the same Series 5 we reviewed earlier this year, except the touchscreen adds some heft (it now weighs 3.83 pounds, versus 3.24 for the non-touch version). As for specs, you’re looking at just two configurations, both of which have 4GB of RAM, a 13-inch (1,366 x 768) display and a 500GB hard drive with 24GB of ExpressCache. The only difference is that the entry-level $799 model has a Core i3 processor, while the $899 version steps up to i5.

If that all sounds rather humdrum, Samsung is attempting to spice up Windows 8 by bundling custom apps, some of which you might remember from its various Android products. Sammy’s various “Hubs” (Music, Video, Media and Social) are all present and accounted for, as is the AllShare app, which uses DLNA to share content across different devices. Additionally, Samsung is including a handful of desktop applications designed to soften the learning curve for people new to Windows 8. For instance, S-Launcher is a desktop widget that replicates the now-extinct Start Menu, live search and all. eSettings, meanwhile, is a centralized options menu for folks who might not know where to find power management or display settings in Win 8. If you follow on below, you’ll find a short video walk-through of some of these apps (Sammy didn’t demo AllShare or the Hubs for us, sadly), and we’ve also got fresh hands-on shots to complement the ones we took back in June.
