ASUS outs dockable Windows 8 Vivo Tab and Vivo Tab RT

ASUS outs dockable Windows 8 Vivo Tab and Vivo Tab RT

It looks like IFA will be where many Windows 8 devices shown back at Computex get (more) official. Exhibit A is ASUS, which today pulled the curtains on the Vivo Tab and the Vivo Tab RT, previously known as the ASUS Tablet 810 and the ASUS Tablet 600, respectively. There’s still no pricing info available, but the company has filled in some of the remaining spec gaps.

As we previously knew, the Vivo Tab sports an 11.6-inch IPS display with a 1,366 x 768 resolution and supports a Wacom digitizer input in addition to 10-point multitouch. The tablet runs an Intel Atom CPU with 2GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The Vivo Tab measures 0.33 inches thick and weighs in at 1.5 pounds. There’s also an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash, plus a 2-megapixel shooter up front. As we learned back in Taipei as well, an NFC sensor will be on board.

Then there’s the Vivo Tab RT, which is slightly smaller, at 0.33 inches thick and 1.1 pounds, and with a 10.1-inch screen. Like its non-RT brother, it boasts an IPS display with a 1,366 x 768 resolution, but it runs a Tegra 3 processor and a 12-core GPU, with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. The RT tablet includes the same cameras and NFC sensor as the Vivo Tab.

Of course, these two slates also come with a Transformer-like dock, which adds a full QWERTY keyboard, trackpad, two USB ports and a second battery. The missing element to this equation is still pricing and availability: check back for those details, and in the meantime hit up the press release below the break.

Samsung’s S Launcher puts the Start menu back in Windows 8

Samsung's S Launcher puts the Start menu back in Windows 8

You know those fresh new Series 7 all-in-ones Samsung outed in the wee hours of this morning? Well, it turns out that while those desktops will be running Windows 8, Mashable discovered that they’ve got a little something extra added to Microsoft’s stock OS: a Start Menu. Called the S Launcher, it’s a widget that replaces that tried and true Start button the folks in Redmond saw fit to eliminate in Win8. As you might expect, it grants access to settings, files and programs in one convenient window, and making additions to the widget is a drag-and-drop affair. So, all you folks having fits about the Start button’s disappearance, fear not, Samsung’s got the software to soothe your troubled mind.

Samsung Series 5 and Series 7 all-in-one Windows 8 PCs, hands-on

We got your hands on the new all-in-one (AIO) PCs that Samsung has just announced today. To keep their naming consistent, Samsung has named them Series 5 and Series 7 like they do for their laptop – the names logically describe the product level in the line-up. The Series 7 comes in two sizes: 27″ ($1699) and 23.6″ (1099), while the series 5 only has a 21.5″ version ($749).

Beyond the sizes, all three computers are different in more than one way. The more obvious one is the design. The 27″ Series 2 comes with a great design that reminds of Samsung’s LED TV, which Samsung’s IT division got inspired from. that’s a great idea given that those designs are rather successful on the market. On that note, the display quality was rather high. (more…)

Samsung unveils new Series 7 and Series 5 AIOs: Windows 8 and gesture recognition for $749 and up

Samsung unveils new Series 7 and Series 5 AIOs Windows 8 and gesture recognition for $749 and up

Samsung teased a Series 7 all-in-one running Windows 8 — on a 10-point touch display — at Computex in June, and today the machine gets official with pricing and specs. The Series 7 will be available in 23- and 27-inch flavors, both of which run Microsoft’s latest OS on a 1080p touchscreen. The setup includes a redesigned keyboard, which is small enough to tuck under the display’s metal stand, and the AIOs will support gesture recognition. The 23-inch Series 7 costs $1,099 and runs a Core i5 CPU with 6GB of RAM, 1TB of storage and Intel Graphics 4000. The 27-inch model offers a Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, 1TB of storage and discrete AMD Radeon HD 7850M graphics, all for $1,699.

In addition to refreshing its Series 7 machines, Samsung is introducing the 21.5-inch Series 5 all-in-one, which it describes as a “kitchen-style PC.” Its legs are on either end of the display, leaving room to stow the keyboard under the screen and freeing up your desk (or counter) space. The Series 5 will go for $749, and it includes a Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM and 500GB of storage. All three AIOs have two USB 3.0 ports, three USB 2.0 connections, HDMI and a media card reader, and all will go on sale October 26th. You know the drill — head past the break for our hands-on photos.

Samsung trademarks Ativ Tab and Ativ S names, may give a peek into its Windows (Phone) 8 world

Samsung trademarks Ativ Tab and Ativ S names, may give a peek into its Windows Phone 8 worldEveryone knows that Samsung is making a big Windows 8 push at IFA, but there’s new signs emerging that it might shake up its naming scheme in the process. We now know through SamMobile that Samsung has quietly snapped up a pair of trademarks with the Ativ badge that would let its branding venture beyond the Galaxy. Ativ Tab is the most conspicuous: unless Samsung is planning a shakeup of its Android slates, there’s a distinct chance we’re looking at the future name for one or more Windows 8 tablets. Ativ S is slightly more nebulous, although that very familiar oversized S raises the possibility of a high-end Windows Phone 8 smartphone like the Odyssey. Whether or not Samsung wields these trademarks later this week, or at all in the near future, is still up in the air — it may be holding on to names as a precaution rather than previewing a course of action. If the Ativ label makes its way into stores, though, it may give Samsung a much catchier (if not entirely intuitive) name for its Windows devices than Series 5 Hybrid PC.

Sony VAIO Duo 11 tablet hybrid spotted with Windows 8

It looks like Sony is gearing up to give Microsoft Surface a run for its money with a new tablet hybrid of its own. The leaked pics you see below come courtesy of an unnamed PocketNow source, and appear to depict a new Sony convertible tablet running Windows 8. While there aren’t too many details at the moment, the pictures do give away some hints as to what this tablet hybrid could be.

First of all, we can see Microsoft Office running on the tablet in one of the images. The keyboard also appears to be backlit, and PocketNow points out that the keyboard isn’t detachable – it’s on there for good. That, when coupled with the office setting of the images, leads us to believe that the VAIO Duo 11 will be aimed more at business people than mainstream consumers.

We can also clearly see a stylus in a few of the images, but it’s unclear how big of a role that will play. You’d probably be able to get away without using the stylus given the touch-friendly nature of Windows 8, but once again, that stylus reinforces the idea that this is a tablet for business professionals. As you can see from one of the images, the tablet can fold over and hide the keyboard, despite the fact that the keyboard is a permanent feature of the Duo 11.

Sadly, PocketNow’s source left the most important information out of this particular leak: pricing and a release date. If Sony aims for a price around that of the Surface, the VAIO Duo 11 could end up being quite a worthy challenger to Microsoft’s upcoming tablet. With the release of Windows 8 just under two months away now, we can probably expect an official reveal from Sony soon, so stay tuned.

Sony’s Shape-Shifting, Windows 8-Powered VAIO Duo 11 Caught In Leaked Images

vaioduo11small

Microsoft’s Windows 8-powered surface tablet may be nabbing all the headlines (at least partially because some of Microsoft’s myriad hardware partners were miffed by the company’s decision to make it in the first place), but a newly-revealed convertible device from Sony seems like it may be able to give the Surface a run for its money.

PocketNow managed to score some images of the forthcoming Sony VAIO Duo 11, a Windows 8 tablet with an awfully familiar-looking gimmick — the (reportedly 11-inch) touchscreen slides up and latches into place, revealing a full-size, back-lit keyboard.

The eagle-eyed among you may note some distinct similarities between the VAIO Duo and the Eee Pad Slider that Asus released towards the end of last year. While I really dig the fact that the keyboard base actually seems to have some weight to it (imagine trying to use the Surface’s floppy physical keyboard on your lap), there is of course one major downside: it’s going to be a hefty little convertible. It’s a natural side-effect of including a physical keyboard that’s worth using, but the end result may well be a device that’s more cumbersome than the competition when used in tablet mode.

You can bet that Sony’s going to try and downplay that size issue, and in fact they already are. In some photos it almost looks like the Duo is lying flush on that table, but the side view (above) reveals a much different story — the device’s bottom actually curves up to meet the keyboard. To round out the package, there’s a capacitive stylus featured prominently in the images, but there’s no word on whether it’ll come with the Duo or if it will be sold separately. Sadly, there’s little in the way of juicy details right now — the spec sheet, release date, and Sony’s pricing plans are all still shrouded in mystery, but IFA is just around the corner and it wouldn’t be a shock if one of these things appeared on the show floor.

Leaked: Images Of Upcoming Sony VAIO Duo 11

With the official release date of Windows 8 just around the corner, a number of hardware vendors are gearing up to release their Windows 8 machines. It seems that among these vendors is Sony with its ‘Sony VAIO Duo 11’ convertible tablet.

For now, all that we know about this sleek tablet-cum-laptop comes from leaked sources. Pocketnow was able to grab information as well as some images of the tablet from one of its sources. From the looks of it, the device comes with a keyboard which can not be detached. The keyboard is also backlit, making it ideal for professional use of the device as a laptop. (more…)

Sony’s Lovely Windows 8 Tablet Should Give Surface Some Competition [Rumor]

Windows 8 is about two months away from release, and Pocket Now has reportedly gotten ahold of some pictures of another convertible tablet—the Sony Vaio Duo 11—to add to this ever-growing list of devices running the new OS. More »

Sony VAIO Duo 11 convertible Windows 8 tablet surfaces in leaked photos

Sony VAIO Duo 11 convertible tablet

We got a look at some hybrid PC concepts from Sony at CES way back in January, and it looks like we could soon be seeing one such device in actual product form. PocketNow has gotten a hold of the image above (and a few more) revealing a hereto unannounced VAIO Duo 11 convertible tablet / laptop. That’s quite obviously a Windows 8 device — likely not the RT version, as PocketNow points out due to the presence of a full-fledged Office — but details are unfortunately light beyond that. As you can see, it also apparently includes a stylus, and that “11” in the name would seem to indicate an 11-inch screen — putting it in line with the 10.6-inch display on Microsoft’s own Surface. You can get a closer look at it at the source link below.
