Nokia tablet tipped by CEO on heels of Surface

This week the CEO of Nokia Stephen Elop has hinted that they’ve once again begun considering the possibility of a tablet PC in the near future. This word comes from an interview Elop did with the Australian Financial Review in which he says the company is not announcing a tablet, but is watching the Microsoft Surface tablet specifically to see how the market will respond to Windows 8 in tablet form. Though this is not an official announcement of a tablet being created by Nokia, it does remind us that they’ve got tablets in mind as a potential future pathway.

This is not the first we’ve heard of a Nokia tablet in the works. One of the more interesting hints came back in March of 2012 where Nokia design chief Marko Ahtisaari confirmed a tablet with the choice quip, “we are working on it.” It was back then that we also saw supply chain sources claiming Nokia would be using Microsoft’s Windows RT system (not quite named that back at the time) for its future first tablet delivery. Elop back then also noted that Nokia wouldn’t create a tablet until it could bring something unique to the space.

We also saw notes about a Nokia Windows RT tablet in December of 2012 complete with a keyboard cover containing a separate battery for the unit. Here in February of 2013 we’ve got Elop once again speaking up (with AFR) saying, “we haven’t announced tablets at this point, but it is something we are clearly looking at very closely.” Elop went on to note that the Nokia is “studying very closely the market right now as Microsoft has introduced the Surface tablet,” making it clear that they are “trying to learn from that and understand what the right way to participate would be and at what point in time.”

Be sure to read the post Where’s Nokia’s tablet strategy? from Chris Davies posted all the way back in July of 2012 to see another guide on this situation that holds true to today. It’s not just about Windows RT, Windows 8, or even Windows Phone 8 here, it’s about Nokia and their lovely Lumia lineup only existing as a smartphone-sized solution. Should Nokia stick to this form for a handheld unit, or does a company with such a massive name need a massive touchscreen offering as well?

Windows 8 Pro Is Still Only $15 If You Don’t Mind Being a Liar (Update: Not Any More)

Technically, Thursday was the last day to pick up a Windows 8 upgrade for $40 before it jumped up to $200, but that’s not exactly the case if you know what you’re doing. There’s a loophole that will let you get that upgrade for a scant $15, and all you have to do is lie to Microsoft; they’re not even checking. More »

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: February 1, 2013

Welcome to Friday evening everyone. The weekend is nearly here, but before we kick it off we’re going to recap the news. Today Apple was named the largest mobile phone manufacturer in the US, while it seems Peter Chou has revealed the long-rumored HTC M7 in a rather silly video. The FTC has fined Path $800,000 for unauthorized data collection, and we learned that Windows 8′s market share is at a disappointingly low 2.3%.

Samsung’s rumored 1080p smartphone has been tipped with an Exynos 5 processor, and Google has started a €60 million French digital publishing fund. New reports are saying that the PlayStation 4 will indeed be on store shelves this year, and that it will include a controller with a touchpad, among other things. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 has made an appearance in benchmark results and appears to be ready for an MWC 2013 reveal, while the ESA is proposing 3D printed buildings on the surface of the moon.

GameStick’s Kickstarter campaign has ended with $647,658 in funding, and sources are saying that word of a Dell buyout could come as early as Monday. We found out that gun manufacturers make money from the sale of some video games, and we caught a glimpse of KIA’s new “Respect the Tech” Super Bowl commercials that feature sexy robots and space babies. We ask if Android is really crushing the iPhone, or if it’s all just hype, and unfortunately Sea Launch’s latest mission has failed, destroying the rocket and satellite in the process.

The Sound City Players have a set a new show in NYC for a film celebration, the Call of Duty championship is kicking off on April 1, and Bethesda has announced release dates for the incoming Skyrim PS3 DLC. Finally tonight, Craig Lloyd tells you how to prepare for the iOS 6.1 jailbreak coming up on Sunday, I tell you what Sony needs to do to make the PS4 a success, and Cory Gunther takes the 2014 KIA Sorento for a test drive. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, we hope you enjoy the weekend!

Windows 8 market share at only 2.3%

It’s been a good three months since Windows 8 released, allowing ample time for those committed to upgrade the time to do so. However, it seems the adoption rate for Microsoft‘s new operating system is remaining quite low, with only 2.26% of the OS market share, compared to Windows 7′s 44.48% and Windows XP’s 39.51%.

According to trend analytics firm Net Applications, Windows 8′s market share continues to rise subtly month after month, but the new operating system has seen very slow adoption overall. Of course, while it may seem that Windows 8 might not be going anywhere, the trend shows that the new OS’s market share isn’t good or bad, but modest.

When Windows 7 first came out, the OS also saw fairly low numbers — granted, not as low as Windows 8, but it saw a market share below 10% after six months. Of course, it’s only been three months for Windows 8, so the only question that remains is if Windows 8 will see a huge jump in market share this year, or if it will begin plateau at a relatively low figure, especially when upgrade prices are now really expensive.

Compared to OS X, Apple‘s latest version, 10.8 Mountain Lion, has 2.44% of the OS market share. That’s only slightly better than Windows 8, but you have to take in account that the last three versions of OS X alone only take up 6.4% of the market share, so technically, OS X Mountain Lion has almost 40% of the OS X market share, a lot better than Windows 8 at this point.

The CEA is seeking a new Best of CES partner after the Dish Hopper situation with CBS, and something fishy seems to be going on behind the scenes over at Kim Dotcom’s new site Mega. Nintendo said that a Wii U price cut isn’t going to happen despite sales that were below expectations, and Apple announced that it will be discontinuing the Mac Pro in Europe starting March 1. BlackBerry 10′s app library might just be 40& Android apps that have been repackaged, while Netflix and Hulu AdZone access will be free on Xbox Live this weekend.

Amazon suffered a bit of an outage this afternoon (but things are good now), and the LG Optimus L7 II Dual leaked in new images today. Grand Theft Auto V‘s spring release was delayed to September 17, while the Angry Birds Star Wars Escape from Hoth update landed today. We learned that the Wall Street Journal was also recently attack by Chinese hackers, and Electronic Arts announced that its next Madden game will be arriving on August 27.

Ashton Kutcher talked about what he hopes fans take away from his new movie JOBS, and Samsung announced that it had purchased a 5% stake in Wacom for almost $60 million. Apple has blocked the latest version of Java 7 from Mac OS X browsers, the Motorola X-Phone has popped up in a new job listing, and Sony announced that it will bringing the Garnet Red PS3 to North America after all. Finally tonight, Chris Davies goes hands-on with the Fujifilm X100S and X20, while Chris Burns tells us why BlackBerry 10 has a bleak future and what three steps RIM would need to take to make a BlackBerry 10 tablet a success. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, we hope you enjoy the rest of your night folks!

Windows 8 upgrade discount officially ends today

If you haven’t yet upgraded to Windows 8, you might want to do that today. Starting tomorrow, that $39 Windows 8 Pro upgrade deal will jump to $199, while a normal Windows 8 upgrade will cost $119. We gave you a fair warning a couple of weeks ago, so if you’ve been procrastinating, today’s the deadline before you’ll have to pony up even more money.

IMG_3436wtmk-w1024-580x4351

In the past, Microsoft offered a promotional deal when Windows 8 launched where users of Microsoft’s older operating systems, such as Windows 7 and Vista, could upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for only $39.99. Frankly, it’s pretty fantastic deal, not quite as good as Apple’s $19 upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion, but we’ll still take it. However, if you don’t take the deal today, you’ll suffer tomorrow.

$199 is definitely a steep cost for an upgrade, but the company will be offering a regular Windows 8 upgrade for $119 if it turns out that you don’t need all the Pro features. If you’re already on Windows 8 but want to upgrade to the Pro version, Microsoft will sell those for $99 starting tomorrow as well.

What’s perhaps even more of a deal, is that Microsoft is letting anyone who bought a Windows 7 machine between June 2, 2012 and January 31, 2013 an upgrade offer to Windows 8 Pro for only $14.99, which is the best deal yet for upgrading to Microsoft’s latest OS. We’ve warned you once, and we’re warning you twice. Take the deal now, or be subject to ridicule starting tomorrow.
