Steven Sinofsky On Surface: “Everything Microsoft Has Done Is Coming Together”

P1010470

Today at Microsoft’s surprise Surface press conference, Steven Sinofsky, President of the Windows and Windows Live Division, reiterated what’s behind Surface. In particular, when it comes to the device, he said that “everything Microsoft has done is coming together.”

Microsoft has brought nearly all of its brands to the Surface. It runs Windows RT and comes with Xbox content stores and even the new Xbox Music service. Microsoft provides Bing-branded apps to read news and get the latest sports scores, and promotes SkyDrive all around the OS.

It is Microsoft’s first take on the tablet market, but a very different one from competitors as you can read in Matt Burns’ review. The company appears to be very committed to the device and is eager to show the features of the device.

The emphasis of the conference is on consumption and entertainment features. Office and the Touch Keyboard are just mentioned briefly.

Yet, the press conference is going through features we already knew. Communication is important for such an important product launch. Selling the Surface is not a small feat. Making customers understand how it works and how it’s different is key to the fate of the device.

Nobody can blame Microsoft for taking a bold move with the Surface — and Windows 8 in general. With it, the software company has designed its first PC. Marketing it will be even harder. But it’s the inevitable next step. Commenters are all waiting for to see how it will turn out.

Amazon introduces Kindle app for Windows 8

Tomorrow is the day that Windows 8 finally arrives, so it isn’t any surprise that we’re seeing companies push their apps for the new OS out the door today. Amazon is one of these companies, today launching a new Kindle for Windows 8 app. Kindle on Windows 8 appears to be mostly the same as Kindle on any other device, but there are a few changes that might be worthy of your attention.

Naturally, the Kindle app for Windows 8 emulates the tile-based theme of the OS, displaying all of the books you have in clean layout. You can pin individual Kindle books to your start screen, meaning that you can have quick access without having to go through the Kindle app first. Kindle fanatics can also you use Windows 8′s search function to find books in their library or in the Kindle store, which should prove to be quite handy considering how nice Windows 8 search is.

Of course, all of your purchased books will sync across all your devices, so you’ll be able to download purchased books to your Windows 8 device the first time you log in. The Kindle Windows 8 app also comes equipped with Whispersync, so your books will sync to your last page read on all of your devices. Other than all of that, you’ve got the typical Kindle functions at your disposal, including the ability to highlight passages and add your own notes.

The Kindle app is free on Windows 8, as it is everywhere else, and it’s available now on the Windows 8 Store. Naturally, most of us won’t be able to download it until Windows 8 is released, but the launch of Windows 8 is now less than 12 hours away. Will you be downloading Amazon’s Kindle app once you have Windows 8 installed?

Microsoft: “As soon as you’ve had touch, you’ll want it on everything”

Microsoft is showing off their new products here the company’s Windows 8 event in New York City, and they’ve been shoving the word “touch” down everyone’s throat — not in a mean and rude way, but it’s a strong focus of their’s no doubt. They mentioned that “as soon as you’ve had touch, you’ll want it on everything.”

This is a fairly different approach compared to Apple, who have always said that reaching out to touch your laptop’s display is counter-intuitive. Steve Jobs famously dismissed the idea when launching the iPad, and Tim Cook has shown no signs of altering that strategy. Microsoft thinks otherwise, saying that once you try out a touchscreen-equipped device, you’ll want that experience on all your devices, which might be true for some people, but maybe not everyone.

We even mentioned in our recent Microsoft Surface review with Windows RT that utilizing and navigating around a classic desktop view is extremely tricky using your fingers, even with all of Microsoft’s changes to the user interface. The text happens to be way too small to easily tap with your finger, and it’s overall really annoying compared to a tablet-optimized solution.

We’ve seen this philosophy of Microsoft’s for the past couple of years, and OEM manufacturers have hopped on board to deliver touchscreen-enabled desktop computers — not just tablets. While larger screens definitely improve the touch experience on the classic desktop UI, it almost seems that keyboard, mice, and trackpads should stay the norm for desktop and laptop computers, and leave the touchscreens to the tablets.

Windows 8 upgrade details shared at Microsoft event

We’re live at Microsoft’s big Windows 8 event in New York City, with the big talking point being the launch of the brand new OS. Microsoft’s Steven Sinofaky is currently on stage, talking about the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8. The new OS goes live at 12:01 AM local time tomorrow morning around the world, and for consumers, the upgrade to the new version starts at $39.99.

That’s not a bad price, and copies of Windows 8 will be available as a download, in stores, and online, Sinofaky says. With the three different preview builds of Windows 8, Sinofaky says that the new OS has gone through a whopping 1.24 billion hours of testing, which should mean that Windows 8 is as bug-free as possible when it launches in just over 12 hours. Of course, as we covered in our review of Windows 8, there are a number of reasons to upgrade, including better performance over Windows 7.

Sinofaky touched on that during his presentation too, claiming that Windows 8 offers better battery life, faster boot times, and a “smaller memory footprint.” The big bonus is that most Windows 7 programs are compatible with Windows 8, which means that you spend less time looking for updates after your install of the new OS is complete. We’ll undoubtedly be hearing more about Windows 8, Surface, and Windows RT during this event, so keep it tuned to SlashGear and be sure to check out our Microsoft Portal for any news you might have missed!

Microsoft: Over 1,000 new PCs now Windows 8 Certified

Microsoft’s new OS is here, and there shouldn’t be a shortage of PCs to experience it on. The company is launching Windows 8 officially today, and according to Windows President Steven Sinofsky, there are over 1,000 new PCs that are certified to use the new platform. That’s not just clunky business desktops, either; there are new tablets, ultrabooks, and all-in-ones, with a big focus on touch.

“These are the best PCs ever made” Sinofsky insisted during today’s event. The company is particularly pushing mobile, with new ultrabooks and tablets both having touchscreens. And, the Microsoft exec highlighted, the price needn’t necessarily be an insurmountable hurdle, with new touch models kicking off from around $499.

One of those Windows PCs is Surface, Microsoft’s own entrant into the hardware race. Initially available running Windows RT – the version of the OS for ARM processors – it’s not perfect (you can find our full review here) but it won’t be Microsoft’s only attempt at the tablet segment. A Windows 8 based Surface Pro will arrive early in the new year.

As for Windows 8 itself, our full review is here if you need to get up to speed on the new, Metro-style UI, and other changes from previous versions of the platform. We’ll have all the news from Microsoft’s event today in our Microsoft Hub.

Windows 8 Review: Incredibly Innovative, Incredibly Important, Not Quite Incredible

Windows. The central pillar of Microsoft and the modern computing world has also been, for the past several years, passingly easy to take for granted. Operating at varying degrees of mundane to tolerable, Windows has been a bore; a groan and a what-can-you-do shrug. No more. More »
