Microsoft Having “Meaningful Discussions” On Bringing Back Windows Start Button

Microsoft Having Meaningful Discussions On Bringing Back Windows Start Button

A lot of traditional Windows users were not impressed by the fact that Windows 8 required them to do an additional unnecessary step to get to the desktop. Furthermore, Microsoft removed the iconic Start button that generations have come to love. It was quite clear from the get go that this OS was developed while keeping tablets and touchscreen computers in mind, but not everyone is going to use Windows 8 on those devices. Recently there’s been chatter indicating that Microsoft might be contemplating on bringing back the Start button, whereas code has already been found in a Windows 8.1 leaked build which points to an option that might let users boot directly to desktop.

Julie Larson-Green, head of Windows Engineering, confirmed today in a conference that Microsoft is having “meaningful discussions” on the prospect of adding older features of the outdated Windows version to future updates of Windows 8. These features include, but are not limited to the Start button. However Julie also says that the company believes fully in the start screen and the “model of having live tiles and access to everything” in a single glance. It is a bit early to say whether the features will be seen in Windows Blue, which was confirmed earlier today, and its public preview release date was also revealed. The next Windows 8 update is slated for release later this year.

Windows Blue Public Preview Release Confirmed For June

Last month we were treated to a number of Windows 8.1 build leaks, one particular leak contained references to Windows 8.1 Preview and Windows Server 2012 R2. Today Microsoft officially confirmed that Windows 8′s much rumored update, Windows 8.1, will be releasing later this year. Windows 8.1 is more commonly known as Windows Blue, it’s a name that stuck. The company has also confirmed that Windows Blue public preview release will take place towards the end of June.

The Windows Blue public preview will be available to anyone who has Windows 8, through the Windows Store. The announcement was made by head of Windows Engineering, Julie Larson-Green at a conference in New York earlier today. The time frame that Julie has given fits in comfortable with that of Microsoft’s Build 2013 conference, which is being held in the last week of June. As far as the public preview for Windows Blue RT is concerned, Microsoft has said that they don’t have any commented with regards to the public preview of the company’s trimmed down update for tablets. HTC R7 And R12 Windows RT Blue Tablets Launch Reportedly In October

HTC R7 And R12 Windows RT Blue Tablets Launch Reportedly In October

It was rumored back in December 2012 that HTC was contemplating entering the Windows RT tablet market. Back then it was said that the Taiwanese manufacturer was working on a 7 inch and a 12 inch tablet which would run on Microsoft’s tablet compatible Windows OS. Today alleged specifics of both tablets have received, but since its just one source, its best to read ahead keeping in mind that these are merely rumors for now.

HTC is reportedly going to release two tablets, the HTC R7 and the HTC R12, the monikers correspond to the respective screen sizes. The R7 is expected to tout a 7-inch full HD display, with a 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM breathing underneath it. There might be a 13 megapixel camera on the back and 16GB of internal storage, with the added option of increasing storage through microSD cards. The smaller of the two tablets is expected not to have NFC, HDMI or DLNA. A variant with LTE/HSPA+ compatibility is expected though, alongside a Wi-Fi only one with the customary Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and A-GPS connectivity features. As far as the HTC R12 is concerned, it will reportedly boast a 12-inch 2048×1536 display and will have the same internal specifications as the R7, but with more connectivity options such as NFC and HDMI.

Details about battery capacity or device dimensions are not available right now. It is rumored that HTC R7 and R12 tablets will be launched on the 13th of October. The tentative release date sits just around the corner from holiday shopping season and is comfortably ahead of the rumored Windows RT Blue release time frame.

Windows Blue Confirmed For 2013 Release

Windows Blue Confirmed For 2013 ReleaseMicrosoft has finally confirmed that Windows 8’s long rumored update, which has been given the nickname Windows Blue by many a person (otherwise known as Windows 8.1 of course), will be rolling out later in the year. Microsoft’s Tami Reller claimed that this particular update will enable Windows to run on a myriad of devices, regardless of their display size, form factor and battery life. This bit of news would certainly shed some hope of seeing smaller sized 7” Windows 8-powered tablets hit the market, and Apple might wonder whether this will affect potential sales figures of their 7.9” iPad mini down the road, not to mention the rather large medium and low cost 7” Android-powered tablet market.

Whispers on the street have it that this particular update will enable smaller sized Windows-powered tablets, and it is nice to see such rumors finally being confirmed. Other beans spilled by Microsoft’s Tami Reller, quoted verbatim, reads as follows, “Windows Blue is a codename for an update that will be available later this year, building on the bold vision set forward with Windows 8 to deliver the next generation of tablets and PCs. It will deliver the latest new innovations across an increasingly broad array of form factors of all sizes, display, battery life and performance, while creating new opportunities for our ecosystem. It will provide more options for businesses, and give consumers more options for work and play. The Windows Blue update is also an opportunity for us to respond to the customer feedback that we’ve been closely listening to since the launch of Windows 8 and Windows RT. From a company-wide perspective, Windows Blue is part of a broader effort to advance our devices and services for Microsoft.” [Press Release]
